Leo as a Nickname

We are looking at naming our son [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] and wanting to use [name_m]Leo[/name_m] as a nickname - does that work or is it a stretch?

I don’t see why not. I can see how it could seem a bit of a stretch, but nicknames don’t always match or follow the first name. If you like [name_m]Leo[/name_m], then go for it

I do think it’s too much of a stretch, sorry. Of course you can use it, but I think it’s a bit strange.

Why not name him [name_m]Leo[/name_m]?

Exactly. [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] is nice and familiar enough of a name that it probably wouldn’t need a nickname in day to day life.

Thanks for the responses.

[name_m]Apollo[/name_m] is a link to a family name (Greek: Apostolos) which is a reason why we chose it. We like the name but think it needs a nickname and love the name [name_m]Leo[/name_m].

I like [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] and love that it’s a family name (Apostolos is super cool!), but I don’t think anyone would connect [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] to [name_m]Leo[/name_m], sorry. If you want both [name_m]Leo[/name_m] and [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], I’d do something like [name_m]Leo[/name_m] [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], or, if you want a fuller name, [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], [name_m]Leander[/name_m] [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], or even [name_u]Elliot[/name_u] [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] (the sound might not be there, but [name_m]Lio[/name_m] is very close to [name_m]Leo[/name_m]). I think [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] nn [name_m]Leo[/name_m] is too much of a stretch.

Sorry.

I say, go for it. I have a nephew named [name_u]James[/name_u] who goes by a completely unrelated nickname and it totally works. His nicknames starts with J too, but otherwise doesn’t have any other connection to [name_u]James[/name_u] - my [name_m]SIL[/name_m] just wanted a formal name on the birth certificate. It’s never been an issue and they just always introduce him by his nickname instead of [name_u]James[/name_u].
