Another name found while surfing the forums! [name]Leonie[/name] has been on my naming radar for a while, but today while shelving books (when all my best thinking is done, lol) I really thought about it. I think I like it, but I’m not sure. I like that [name]Leonie[/name] is a nod to my late grandfather (who was a [name]Roger[/name] [name]Lyon[/name]) but I don’t like that it has disputed pronunciations. It goes well with my other names, [name]Dorothea[/name], [name]Sybil[/name] and [name]Jane[/name], but I’m still not sure.
So what do you think of [name]Leonie[/name], Berries? [name]How[/name] do you pronounce it?

I really like [name]Leonie[/name]. I pronounce it like [name]Lee[/name]-oh-ney.
I knew a [name]Leoni[/name] at school. ‘lee-OH-nee’ is how we pronounced it.
I really like it. I know a sweet elderly lady named [name]Leonie[/name], but I could easily picture it on someone younger. We are french-Canadian and we pronounce it lay-oh-nee.
I love this name, but I have pronunciation troubles with it. I feel like it should be pronounced lay-oh-NEE (and with a French accent), but since I’m not even remotely French and no one I know is or speaks French (beyond high school French, of course), it would probably always be pronounced (even by us) [name]LEE[/name]-a-nee (sort of like [name]Leo[/name] with “nie” at the end), which I don’t like at all. If only I were French, this would be the perfect name.

It’s mostly lay-oh-nee for me, but sometimes I pronounce it lee-oh-knee too. I love it, but slightly prefer [name]Leona[/name].
I prn it ley-oh-nee because the only Léonie’s I know are french. In the past I would consider that the only prn but since I’ve been on nameberry I’ve changed my opinion and feel lee-oh-nee is acceptable in the states.
I adore [name]Leonie[/name] - it was on my list for a while. I would say lee-OH-nee if speaking to an anglophone or lay-oh-NEE is speaking to a francophone. If it were spelled Léonie, I would say lay-oh-nee regardless of whom I was speaking to and would just alter where I place the stress. I’ve never heard it pronounced [name]LEE[/name]-uh-nee.
