We are having a terrible time naming our second son, who is due at the beginning of [name]April[/name]. Our first boy is [name]Miles[/name]. We like names that are a little unusual but not too odd, no alternative spellings, and don’t end in an “-en” sound because our last name is Human. We’re also not fond of Biblical names… I guess we’re kind of picky and that’s why this is so hard!
[name]Julius[/name] is the frontrunner because it’s a family name but we’re having cold feet. It’s a bit of a mouthful and I dislike the nickname [name]Jules[/name] so I wouldn’t call him that… it’s DH’s pick but now he’s afraid [name]Julius[/name] would get teased. DH also likes [name]Felix[/name], but I’m so-so because my stepmom had a cat by that name for 20 yrs. Other names in the mix include [name]Laszlo[/name], [name]Rocco[/name] (too Italian? we’re not Italian at all), [name]Curtis[/name]… but we don’t really love anything. HELP!
I really like [name]Julius[/name]. I think it goes well with [name]Miles[/name]. It’s strong and distinctive without being weird or out there. I also like [name]Felix[/name], but I understand how it has strong associations as a pet’s name for you. Since you don’t like the nickname [name]Jules[/name], maybe you can sometimes call him by his middle name if it’s shorter, or has a nick name you like better. I do think that people will try to shorten it to something.
Before I read your post, [name]Julian[/name] was the first name to come to mind with [name]Miles[/name]. [name]Julius[/name] makes me think of the [name]Paul[/name] [name]Frank[/name] monkey by that name and [name]Orange[/name] [name]Julius[/name]. I just can’t get past those associations. I’ve never seen it spelled that way, I just looked it up and [name]Lazlo[/name] is an alternate spelling (I think [name]Laszlo[/name] looks Polish; my dh is Polish so I’m fairly familiar with Polish letter combos). I’m not even sure where I’ve heard it before (is it a surname, maybe?) but I love the way it sounds. [name]Miles[/name] and [name]Laszlo[/name]/[name]Lazlo[/name]. I dig it!

If [name]Jude[/name] can work as a nn for [name]Julian[/name], then I don’t know why [name]Julius[/name] couldn’t. Although if you aren’t a fan of biblical names, [name]Julius[/name] nn [name]Jude[/name] might not be the best solution for you. I think we’re probably going to go into labor & delivery with a short list of [name]Julius[/name], [name]Rocco[/name], [name]Felix[/name], and in case we want to go more traditional… [name]Theodore[/name] ([name]Ted[/name]) was an old idea we will keep in rotation. I don’t think we’re going to be able to settle until we see him, but [name]Julius[/name] is the most likely pick.
I am still 100% undecided, hopefully he doesn’t come too early! It may just be the kind of thing where we have to see him first before I can finally settle. I am having a hard time giving up any of the names on the list because I really like all of them a lot, but haven’t been able to fall completely in love with any yet! Still open to advice and suggestions!
