Thinking of naming my daughter [name_u]Lessie[/name_u]. it’s the name of my grandmother, whom I loved and respected a lot. It’s definitely not a mainstream name so I’m looking for feedback. FYI, the middle name would be [name_u]Rae[/name_u] (another family name). Any opinions would be appreciated.
Hmmm. I love the family connection and it certainly fits with a certain vintage style that’s in. [name_f]Essie[/name_f] gets a lot of love on this board lately. But I always recommend a fuller name as an option, I think many people will either hear [name_u]Leslie[/name_u] or assume it is short for [name_u]Leslie[/name_u]. I also find “Less” kind of negative, although it doesn’t ruin it. It’s useable, but a little risky. If she will have siblings, are there similar vintage names for them, or do you not care about that? I can see it as a nickname for [name_f]Celeste[/name_f].
It seems to nicknamey to me. I’d personally use a longer name like [name_f]Alessia[/name_f] or [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] with [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] as a nn.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I appreciate it. RE: siblings with vintage names-- not on the table right now so I’d have to consider [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] on its own. [name_f]My[/name_f] backup is [name_f]Ella[/name_f], which is the name of my great-grandmother, but I’m afraid that name is actually too popular right now… So tough to decide!
I love all of [name_u]Lessie[/name_u]'s sentimental meaning and vintage charm for you!
If it were me, [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] would be a nickname for {i.e.} [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] or [name_f]Celestine[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u].
It’s adorable! There’s a big obsession around here with short names needing longer forms, but just [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] is fine.
BTW if you wanted to add extra sentiment [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] would be lovely.
[name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] or [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] Raphaella (nn [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u]) would be lovely!
I think [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] is cute. I don’t see why if you’re only going to use [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] why you’d need a longer name.
Thanks again. I really appreciate all the posts.
In [name_m]Britain[/name_m] nicknamey names are all the rage. i think it stands on its own so go for it.
I think [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] is sweet and fine all on its own without a longer first name. I also love the suggestion of [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] [name_f]Ella[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u].
Where I’m from (South [name_u]West[/name_u] [name_f]England[/name_f]), lessie is a derogatory term for a lesbian. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted to let you know, because it popped immediately into my head on seeing the title of this thread. Around there at least, it would lead to a lot of childhood teasing, but you know best the situation in your own area.
@jackal - I thought that term was said lezzie (with Z’s instead of S’s); it’s a subtle difference though, so people may still make the connection. It’s something to think about.
I like [name_u]Lessie[/name_u], but even though I love nicknamey-names, I think it’s too cutesy to work on its own. I agree that [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] works really well as a full name. [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] is beautiful.
I was just about to mention this. I’m in Australia, and lessie is used here for the same thing.
[name_u]Lessie[/name_u] sounds too much like Lezzie - that is the first thing that popped in my head when i read that - sorry!
what about [name_f]Melissa[/name_f]?
I see [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] getting made fun of when she’s older. I would use [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] as middle names, and use [name_f]Eleanor/name_f as a first name and you could use [name_f]Ella[/name_f].
I think [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] is unique, gorgeous, and honors family. A perfect combination!
I really adore [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] [name_u]Rae[/name_u] on its own. Yes, [name_u]Lessie[/name_u] would be cute as a nickname for [name_f]Celeste[/name_f] or [name_f]Alessandra[/name_f], but with girls being named just [name_f]Ellie[/name_f] and [name_f]Maggie[/name_f] I think she would fit right in as a stand alone name.
I think it’s adorable and love the family tie. I do think it would still honor her if used as a nickname tho, if you decide to go that route.
Thanks for all the input guys. I really appreciate it.
