Let's go A-Hunting... for the Fifth Boy

My “set” shortlist consists of [name_m]Casimir[/name_m], [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] and [name_m]Endymion[/name_m]. They’re interesting, beautiful and alluring, and they all feel very different from each other and from my daughter’s name too.

Names completing for the fifth spot are (updated list here):
[name_m]Galileo[/name_m]
[name_m]Herakles[/name_m]
[name_m]Lancelot[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucius[/name_m]*
[name_m]Merlin[/name_m] (conflicting with [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]?)
[name_m]Orlando[/name_m]
Pryderi
[name_m]Remus[/name_m]*
[name_m]Severus[/name_m]*
[name_m]Socrates[/name_m]

What do you think of these? Which one would you choose? Which one do you think we should choose?

Other suggestions are of course welcome. I didn’t think of [name_m]Herakles[/name_m] until I saw redwoodfey’s [name_m]Hercules[/name_m] thread just now, so I’m sure there might be other gems hiding out there. Names not related to Greek mythology are especially welcome. Husband’s rule is “no sobbing little mama’s boys, excruciating cruelty or obvious insanity (tied to their names)”.

  • yes, I do love [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and I’m not ashamed.

[name_m]Galileo[/name_m], [name_m]Lancelot[/name_m], or [name_m]Remus[/name_m]. Nope, I did not choose just one. So I am only sort of helpful. I can possibly help you eliminate though? I don’t think you should choose [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] because you love [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] so much. And I’m pretty sure you don’t need another O option to choose between so I don’t think [name_m]Orlando[/name_m] makes the cut. I don’t actually know how to say Pryderi or where that one’s from, but it seems a bit difficult to spell so I don’t see it winning. And I still prefer [name_m]Lucius[/name_m] in that middle spot…

[name_m]Galileo[/name_m]- Is a good one. Very cool; Scientific but he also still feels magical because of all the astronomy he brings with him. I definitely think that since Gwenllian and [name_m]Gawain[/name_m] are now out, you could use a good G name.

[name_m]Lancelot[/name_m]- I see this one of two ways. Upside, it’s totally romantic and you guys can pull this name off. Downside, most people would probably just end up calling him “[name_m]Lance[/name_m]” which is a bit plain and/or weapon-y, so unless that greatly appeals to you, you might want to pass on this.

[name_m]Remus[/name_m]- Why did I think that one was out of the running? Maybe I just assumed you liked [name_m]Romulus[/name_m] better? I love [name_m]Remus[/name_m] for so many reasons! This would probably be my personal favorite pick, but it’s still a little similar to the other names you have. For that reason I think I will give this round to [name_m]Galileo[/name_m]. =]

Have you read the biography that J.K. Rowling released for [name_m]Remus[/name_m] Lupin?

I would actually really love to see [name_m]Galileo[/name_m] on your list.

With [name_m]Casimir[/name_m], [name_u]Oberon[/name_u], [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] and [name_m]Endymion[/name_m], I would choose…

[name_m]Galileo[/name_m] - I think your list needs a boys name ending in “o”
[name_m]Lucius[/name_m] - if you don’t mind this name sharing an “us” ending with [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m]
[name_m]Remus[/name_m] - see [name_m]Lucius[/name_m] (hey, if you like [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] and the names are good, by all means, use them)

Honorable Mentions

[name_m]Orlando[/name_m]
Pryderi

I always love the chance to talk names with you.
Well, from your list, my favorite is Galileo. It’s on my guilty pleasure list. It could be Leo! I think it sits fairly well with the others and I think it works with Aphrodite.

So my top 3 are:

Galileo
Lucius – it’s just so lush and handsome and sort of dark velvety and I love it.
Remus – I just like it better than Romulus. I don’t think of HP first, I think of Roman mythology.

I love Socrates and Lancelot, but don’t like them with Aphrodite, but would love to see them as middles maybe. With Merlin, though I love it, I love Morgana so much, and you do too, and I think Morgana is absolutely perfect with Aphrodite. If I remember my mythology right, Merlin and Morgana didn’t necessarily get along well.

I think you might like:

Sherlock
Leonidas
Voltaire (just got hubby to agree to this one!)
Lafayette
Cicero
Napoleon – of course he’s a war general, but still… “This man exercises an astonishing seduction on all those who approach him.”
Ramses
Jacquot – ja-coo From what I can gather – He saved King Louis the 14th when he was a kid and I think it’s cool “In the mid-1640s, French coal salesman Jacquot came home late to his family’s one-room shack with a half-drowned kid in his arms. Over the long night, they nursed him back to consciousness while Jacquot explained that he had found the boy sinking in a pool behind the royal palace with no one else in sight. The kid woke up, and started mocking the poverty of the house, the clothes they had changed him into, and the food they made for him. After a little while, voices rose outside, and half the royal guard burst into the room. It turned out that Jacquot had rescued the boy king Louis XIV from an early death.”

Daedalus
Odysseus
Ulysses
Beowulf – but probably too much >.<
Völsung
Sigmund
Sigurd

These are all Shakespearean:

Balthasar
Bassanio
Cerimon
Cornelius
Cymbeline <3
Horatio

Calidore
Marinell – this one has a water connection with Aphrodite (since she was born of the sea foam and you see her as watery)
Satyrane – probably too much for you, but I sort of love it
Talus
Timias
Triamond

I love Ariston (an ancient king of Sparta, an amusing poet, it seems to have been a common name way back).

I’m really liking all the names on your list, but my top two would be [name_m]Remus[/name_m] and [name_m]Lucius[/name_m]. They both beautiful names and feel quite different from the other names on your list (and indulge in the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] love!)

southern.maple, where is this biography of [name_m]Remus[/name_m] Lupin?!

[name_m]Galileo[/name_m] - YES! This one is great and I love the nn possibility of [name_m]Leo[/name_m]
[name_m]Herakles[/name_m] - This one is nice as well!
[name_m]Lancelot[/name_m] - Agree with previous poster that the nn possibility of [name_m]Lance[/name_m] would be a deterrent for me.
[name_m]Lucius[/name_m] - It’s nice but not my FAVE [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] name. What about Voldemort? just kidding
[name_m]Merlin[/name_m] - You said in the other thread that you CAN’T see yourself without a daughter named [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]. For me, naming a son [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] takes this out of the realm of possibility for me. I’d get rid of this one.
[name_m]Orlando[/name_m] - I’ll admit, I think of [name_m]Orlando[/name_m], FL as well as [name_m]Orlando[/name_m] Bloom first. However, I still think this is a great name!
Pryderi - No offense to you, but this one confuses me. And “pry” at the beginning is a negative connotation.
[name_m]Remus[/name_m] - THIS is the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] name to go with. Wonderful connections, wonderful name!
[name_m]Severus[/name_m] - [name_m]Little[/name_m] Sev <3 I’ll admit I still don’t like this one as much as Remus.
Socrates - Not my favorite of your choices.

So, I would choose either Galileo, Herakles, Orlando or Remus to round out your top 5. Probably in this ranking:

  1. Galileo
  2. Remus
  3. Orlando
  4. Herakles

Good luck!!

I would pick my top three ( What can i do ? i love too many  )

  1. [name_m]Lancelot[/name_m] my absolutly favorite !!its just sound so romantic & strong next to [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]
  2. [name_m]Remus[/name_m] i [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] association !
3.[name_m]Lucius[/name_m] its just give me the perfect imagine of what a man should be like .So dashing & handsome .

Good luck

PS sorry for the many faces . i love them (What can i say ? iam a child lol )

If I couldn’t have [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] I’d pick [name_m]Lancelot[/name_m]. I also think [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] is a smashing suggestion.

[name_f]Amy[/name_f]; no no no, you’re always very helpful! I think you picked a good top three. And you’re probably right about [name_m]Merlin[/name_m]. And basically all the other ones you eliminated. Pryderi is [name_f]Rhiannon[/name_f]’s son in Welsh mythology. I love what you say about [name_m]Galileo[/name_m]! And [name_m]Lancelot[/name_m], I’d hate it if someone called him [name_m]Lance[/name_m]… [name_m]Remus[/name_m] is very lovely, I was torn on [name_m]Remus[/name_m] and [name_m]Romulus[/name_m] for a long time… but we made up our minds. (And yes, we always have to edit!)

Southern; YES!!! Isn’t that one amazing? [name_m]Remus[/name_m] Lupin is one of my absolute favourite characters, and that bio is so moving.

[name_u]Mischa[/name_u]; Thanks! I don’t mind another –us ending, I’m fairly certain I won’t have five sons anyway…

[name_u]Angel[/name_u]; Me too :D! Good reasoning as always. [name_m]Merlin[/name_m] and [name_f]Morgana[/name_f] had an interesting and complicated relationship, how it was depends on the source. Your suggestions are all making me swoon! Husband approved: [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m], [name_m]LaFayette[/name_m], [name_m]Odysseus[/name_m] (was on our list earlier), [name_m]Cymbeline[/name_m] and [name_m]Horatio[/name_m]. I also love love love Calidore, [name_f]Marinell[/name_f], Timias and Triamond, and we’re hoping to use one of them as a middle. Beowulf is so cool, but I think I might need some convincing! I love the story of Jacquot, but Husband thinks it’s “too French”.

Rkrd; I do like Ariston!

[name_f]Mary[/name_f]; thanks! They’re two of my favourites too.

Spacecow; It’s on potterhead.com

[name_f]Tigerlily[/name_f]; Thanks for the comments! Voldemort would be a daring choice… haha. I think it’s between [name_m]Remus[/name_m] and [name_m]Galileo[/name_m]…

[name_f]Belle[/name_f]; top three’s fine! Thanks for picking them out (and never apologise for smilies!).

[name_u]Ren[/name_u]; [name_m]Casimir[/name_m] is still the front runner… I think. [name_m]Lancelot[/name_m] is smashing! I also love [name_u]Angel[/name_u]’s [name_m]Horatio[/name_m] suggestion!

When I posted I was sure I’d forgotten another nerdy name… and I did. Faramir!!

And we’re adding some of [name_u]Angel[/name_u]'s suggestions, so new list:
[name_m]Cymbeline[/name_m]
Faramir
[name_m]Galileo[/name_m]
[name_m]Herakles[/name_m]
[name_m]Horatio[/name_m]
[name_m]LaFayette[/name_m]
[name_m]Lancelot[/name_m]
[name_m]Remus[/name_m]
[name_m]Sherlock[/name_m]

[name_m]Galileo[/name_m], hands down. Runner-up would be [name_m]Lucius[/name_m], but I’m still holding out hope for [name_m]Endymion[/name_m] [name_m]Lucius[/name_m] [name_m]Rainier[/name_m].

I think [name_m]Galileo[/name_m] rounds out your list perfectly. He is familiar and accessible while still being totally quirky and surprising. The magic and mystery of the stars makes the name so compelling, and the science-y vibe is the perfect counterpart to ethereal mythological [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]. Putting these two in a sibset elevates both names and prevents either from appearing “gimmicky.” I love it. Plus I’m a sucker for the O ending…

I like [name_m]Lucius[/name_m], but I just love [name_m]Severus[/name_m] so much. It’s actually my favorite boys name, ever.

I’m with Sessha-- [name_m]Galileo[/name_m] feels perfect to me. It just screams intelligence in a totally unpretentious, kind of fun way.

And [name_m]Cymbeline[/name_m], [name_m]Cymbeline[/name_m], [name_m]Cymbeline[/name_m]. I love it sooo much. But it looks kinda feminine, so I’d use it in the middle spot. And also, play-[name_m]Cymbeline[/name_m] tried to force his daughter to marry a horrible person…(I haven’t extensively researched historical [name_m]Cymbeline[/name_m]. Or Cunobelinus. But Wikipedia says he didn’t do any of that.)

And also [name_m]Horatio[/name_m], because I can’t not vote for the [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] ones.

I like Faramir, [name_m]Galileo[/name_m], [name_m]Lancelot[/name_m], or [name_m]Remus[/name_m] best.

With your daughters name, my top pick would be Faramir/[name_m]Galileo[/name_m].

[name_u]Oberon[/name_u] and [name_m]Remus[/name_m] would be my top picks from your list.

I prefer lucien to lucius but I love them both and might I suggest [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m] I have heard this pronouced hay drien and hay dren and I believe the second is how its pronounced in [name_m]Britain[/name_m]? I think they go well with your style. And just for the record albus is a huge gp name of mine.

My favorite 3 (I always love your boy’s lists, so hard to pick!)
[name_m]Remus[/name_m] - [name_f]One[/name_f] of my favorite HP charecters, [name_m]Remus[/name_m] Lupin would be an awesome namesake. Also the Mythological roots ties it in really well with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f]. (This is probably my favorite from the list if I have to pick a favorite)
[name_m]Galileo[/name_m] - another great namesake
[name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] - just because I love [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] [name_m]Holmes[/name_m], I’m not so sure about this with [name_f]Aphrodite[/name_f] though, her being Ancient, him being more modern (couple thousand years versus a hundred or so)

Is [name_m]Orlando[/name_m] now off the list? If he’s not he would replace [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] in my top 3. I can easily imagine you with a son named [name_m]Orlando[/name_m], such a romantic name yet so masculine.

If I were to remove any from your list I would remove Herakules because he just seems so macho (and I like manly names,so it’s hard for me to say a name is too macho), and [name_m]Lancelot[/name_m].

I just wrote you a novel on your girls thread, so I’ll try to keep this short. Have I mentioned how much I love your boys’names? Have 5 sons! Lol

[name_m]Galileo[/name_m]- wow. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wow. If I ever met a boy named [name_m]Galileo[/name_m], I’d follow him home just to meet his parents.

[name_m]Lucius[/name_m]- he feels like the male counterpart to [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]. Does that make sense? That’s how I see it in my head.

[name_m]Orpheus[/name_m]- it’s my husband’s fave. He likes -us ending names. That’s what he just said. Oh, and that a boy named [name_m]Orpheus[/name_m] would be awesome. He doesn’t give me much. Lol
