I prefer [name_f]Adele[/name_f]. [name_f]Adela[/name_f] seems to me like someone couldn’t decide between [name_f]Adele[/name_f] and [name_f]Adelia[/name_f]… and it rhymes with Nutella, which could be good or could be bad. I also prefer it with one L only.

My daughter is [name_f]Adella[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]. We pronounce it ah-[name_u]DELL[/name_u]-ah. No one has ever pronounced it differently.

@lailanotlilah - haha, the tie to Nutella would DEFINITELY be a good one for me! haha.

Now that we’ve established the fact that I’m clearly in the minority here (:(), how bad would it be, do you think, to use [name_f]Adela[/name_f]/[name_f]Adella[/name_f] with the [name_m]ADD[/name_m]-eh-lah pronunciation? I mean, ah-[name_u]DELL[/name_u]-ah’s not bad. It’s clearly got origins, but [name_m]ADD[/name_m]-eh-lah is what I fell in love with. :frowning: [name_m]How[/name_m] much of a pain would it be to use an unorthodox pronunciation? Is [name_f]Adela[/name_f]/[name_f]Adella[/name_f] prn. [name_m]ADD[/name_m]-eh-lah a really bad idea? :frowning:

I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad idea, but I do think it will be a life-long issue for you and whatever future daughter you have. I think [name_m]ADD[/name_m]-ell-uh makes just as much sense as ah-[name_u]DELL[/name_u]-uh, but due the the rise of [name_f]Adele[/name_f] (via the pop star) I think ah-[name_u]DELL[/name_u]-uh is how a great majority of people will say the name, and it will be something you will always have to correct, and some people may just never get it. If it were me, I would skip [name_f]Adela[/name_f] and stick with [name_f]Adele[/name_f].

P.S. I like your [name_f]Adele[/name_f] combos just the tiniest bit more, I think they flow better, they are lovely.

I love, love, love [name_f]Adela[/name_f]. I pronounce it like [name_f]Adele[/name_f] with an A at the end. If I were to have a baby tomorrow it would be on my hospital short list. I think you could pronounce it the way you like and I think your success rate would depend greatly on your community and family. Since it’s not very common people will be less set in their conception of the name but I don’t think it’s the most natural pronunciation for an American accent (not sure where you are from). I’d suggest testing it out, try it on for a Starbucks name and ask people local to you for their impressions.

Otherwise, I think Adeline will consistently get you the starting sound you prefer. That might be the best option.

@anaxandra - good point! I mean, I went to boarding school with the [name_f]Adella[/name_f] I knew, and my sister went to school with her sister? I mean, I wasn’t overwhelmingly close to her, but she was a nice girl. She was Brazilian, so I sort of wonder if it wasn’t an unusual Portuguese/Brazilian pronunciation that I’m not too familiar with? I mean, I doubt my family would recognize the name if I said, “Oh this and this about [name_f]Adella[/name_f]”, but most of my high school friends would probably remember her. She was a grade below me. It’s so multicultural here that I feel like if I introduced my daughter as [name_f]Adella[/name_f] ([name_m]ADD[/name_m]-eh-lah), they’d just roll with it. I grew up with more kids with unusual names than popular ones, so [name_f]Adela[/name_f]/[name_f]Adella[/name_f] just seems like one of the bunch. I really wish I could like the ah-[name_u]DELL[/name_u]-ah pronunciation, as I think it’d make things easier, but I just can’t seem to get into it.

I do like [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] quite a lot–in fact, I had [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] on my list instead of [name_f]Adele[/name_f] to begin with–but I do really love [name_f]Adele[/name_f], too (which must seem bizarre, haha), and I’m loving [name_f]Adele[/name_f] more than [name_f]Adeline[/name_f] right now, too. So I think, if I use an [name_f]Addy[/name_f] name, it’d be [name_f]Adele[/name_f] or [name_f]Adella[/name_f]/[name_f]Adela[/name_f].

Maybe I’ll poll some of my coworkers to see how they’d say [name_f]Adela[/name_f]/[name_f]Adella[/name_f]. I am always asking them about names for my story, anyway, so I feel like they wouldn’t bat an eye at that anymore, lol.

@axps - What would work better with [name_f]Adela[/name_f], do you think? At first I thought I’d like the same middles, but now they don’t seem quite as nice with [name_f]Adela[/name_f] (and I noticed before I even looked at your response!). What would work better with [name_f]Adela[/name_f], do you think? My first thought was [name_f]Adela[/name_f] [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] or [name_f]Adela[/name_f] [name_f]Camille[/name_f], or maybe even [name_f]Adela[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f], but those seem sort of expected, almost?

[name_f]Adella[/name_f] has been on my mind lately alot Im obsessed with the combo of [name_f]Adela[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f] ! [name_u]Love[/name_u] it but Dh don’t so wont be using it but I just love [name_f]Jane[/name_f] as middle with it .

Both are A-dell-a to me in English. In [name_m]German[/name_m] [name_f]Adella[/name_f] is A-dell-a and [name_f]Adela[/name_f] is A-deh-la (long E, our counterpart to your “ee”).
[name_f]Adele[/name_f] is obviosly A-dell to me. Addela would be [name_m]Add[/name_m]-e-la though honestly, that spelling looks awful.
My favourite out of all of them is [name_f]Adela[/name_f].

This is pronounced [name_m]Add[/name_m]-ella.
Like [name_f]Adele[/name_f], with an A on the end.

Easy

I think [name_m]ADD[/name_m]-uh-la pronounciation is really pretty! I’ve never heard of it before but I don’t personally know any [name_f]Adele[/name_f]'s or [name_f]Adela[/name_f]'s or [name_f]Adella[/name_f]'s. I just pronounce it [name_f]Adele[/name_f]-uh, but I like your way more! The girl, [name_f]Adella[/name_f], you knew got away with the pronounciation, I don’t see why you couldn’t!

I’ve never heard it pronounced other than [name_m]Ah[/name_m]-dell-uh/ah-dell-ah.

I much prefer [name_f]Adela[/name_f]/[name_f]Adella[/name_f]. I think it is just because I prefer -a endings. I also just think of the singer and would automatically think that someone was using it because of the celebrity.

[name_f]Adela[/name_f] [name_f]Sofia[/name_f] [name_f]Eloise[/name_f] is stunning. It is bouncy and lively with a classic, European twist. It works really well in colour for me too.
