Let's talk about Alexandrina

My DH absolutely adores this name, but I think it sounds so snooty. I don’t even think it sounds pretentious. I think it sounds like an old-fashioned name a generational wealth person that hates everyone would have. I don’t hate it, I like it - I just think it sounds snooty. He says (Ah-lek-sahn-dree-nah) We are German by the way. I’ve presented so many alternatives, but he always chooses this one instead. He has the nicknames worked out and all. My name is Isabella and he wants to use my name as her middle name to pass it on. Particularly the very long name of Alexandrina Isabella Victoria. All monarchs? I don’t understand the theme of thinking here. We’ve had many debates about this name so I suppose I’m just looking for a bit of guidance here

EDIT: I love the names Valentina and Angelina and he says it doesn’t “fit” the studious vibes we “should be going for”

I’m with you. I’m not a big fan of [name_f]Alexandrina[/name_f] either - it just seems overly long to me compared to [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]. Plus I imagine a girl with this name will probably get called [name_u]Alex[/name_u] anyway, either because she prefers it or because other people insist on shortening it.

I wouldn’t really recommend [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] as a middle name since [name_f]Queen[/name_f] Victoria’s full name was [name_f]Alexandrina[/name_f] [name_f]Victoria[/name_f] so it feels like an deliberate reference to her.

I’d suggest coming up with a list of names you both like and narrow it down from there.

I think at this point it’s clear you don’t want to give your daughter this name, and you need to make it clear to him too. No discussion, this isn’t up for debate, just ‘hey, I know you love [name_f]Alexandrina[/name_f] but I just don’t, so we need to find a name that we at least both like.’ Until you make it clear to him that you’re not budging on [name_f]Alexandrina[/name_f], he might continue to not take your other name suggestions seriously.

You could offer the compromise of using [name_f]Alexandrina[/name_f] as a middle, if he’s so attached to it. And you said he’s mentioned nicknames, maybe it’d be worth looking into other names that can offer those nicknames?

I also definitely agree with you on the middle names being too directly royal. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you even want to pass on your name to your child? That should be your decision, not his. Again I think what you need here is clear, straight-to-the-point communication! Good luck!

You’ve both got to be happy with the name choice and the direction the name is taking and it’s really clear you’re not liking this one. You shouldn’t have to use it if it’s unappealing to you.

You could come up with a compromise - ie. using it as a middle - or, suggest you both have to come up with a new list of names that you each like, to generate more ideas.

I do find [name_f]Alexandrina[/name_f] a little fussy - it’s not bad and it does provide plenty of great nickname options - but yeah, it is a little long, but not in a way that rolls off the tongue for me.

It’s a nice name, but I think you’d have an easier time with an [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] or an [name_u]Andrea[/name_u], or even a [name_f]Drina[/name_f]. For nicknames, though, I like [name_f]Andie[/name_f], [name_u]Lexie[/name_u], [name_f]Dree[/name_f], [name_f]Dea[/name_f], Xina and [name_f]Rina[/name_f]. If you live in an [name_f]English[/name_f] speaking country, though, I can almost guarantee it’ll be pronounced like aa licks and REE nuh, or similarly. But overall, it’s lovely.

I wouldn’t mind passing my name down. I love my name, and it’s sweet to think it may be used as an honour name some day but it’s certainly not my top concern. Lol

I think it is really pretty! A bit of a mouthful, but there are lots of nickname options! I also like [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f].

Some other ideas for y’all:
[name_f]Vivienne[/name_f]
[name_f]Tatiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Katerina[/name_f]
[name_f]Florencia[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgiana[/name_f]
[name_f]Magdalena[/name_f]
[name_f]Luciana[/name_f]

I think it’s the syllables for me. It’s just a step too far. [name_f]Gorgeous[/name_f], don’t get me wrong–and serious and studious, like he said–but a mouthful.

He can get the nicknames from simpler, timeless [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], or the sound from [name_f]Audrina[/name_f]. Both have the same flair (to me) without having to use five syllables to get there.
