Let's talk about King!

I’ve a couple set girl names that I would use to honor my grandmother if I have a daughter, but I recently realized that I have absolutely no boy names to honor her. Her first and middle name are distinctively feminine so naturally I went to her last name [name_m]King[/name_m]. I don’t [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] it, but I have no other options beside not honoring her. She was a huge and important part in my childhood so I don’t want to do that.

I’ve thought of using names that mean king. The problem is there aren’t a lot of names that have just king in the meaning. I’ve thought of [name_m]Arthur[/name_m], but the meaning isn’t confirmed and it doesn’t mean just king.

Quoted from Behind The Name:
“The meaning of this name is unknown. It could be derived from the Celtic elements artos “bear” combined with viros “man” or rigos “king”.”

I just don’t like any of the names that mean king or something similar to it so I would probably end up using just [name_m]King[/name_m].

I like two middle names and prefer king as the second middle because to me it sounds like I am announcing royalty if it’s the first middle.

Some my favorite combinations with [name_m]King[/name_m] added on:
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]

The only one I think really works is [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m].

So on to the actual questions …What are your general thoughts on [name_m]King[/name_m]?

Does it seem pretentious if you don’t know that it is to honor someone?

Any suggestions, combinations or additional advice are welcome!

These are the boy names on my list: [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], [name_m]Perseus[/name_m], [name_m]Walter[/name_m], [name_m]Michael[/name_m], [name_m]Conrad[/name_m], [name_u]Emmett[/name_u], [name_m]Alexander[/name_m], [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]Elijah[/name_m], [name_u]James[/name_u], [name_m]Alaric[/name_m], [name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m], [name_m]Simon[/name_m], and [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m].

The bolded are my favorites.

First of all, you have fantastic taste in names  Secondly, I think that in the middle name spot (especially the second middle) no one is going to question whether you’re being pretentious or not. Most people won’t even know that it’s there. I think it’s amazingly sweet that you’ve chosen to honour your grandmother this way. I am, in fact, the mother of a [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_u]Bradley[/name_u] Stiles S________, Stiles having been my Grandmother’s maiden name. I don’t think I’d take away from that by choosing a name similar in meaning to [name_m]King[/name_m]. The only suggestion I would make (and only if [name_m]King[/name_m] itself doesn’t work for you or your SO) would be [name_m]Kingston[/name_m]. I’ve got one of those in my Pre-K class, and he’s a doll!

[name_m]King[/name_m] would make an excellent middle name choice. I went to school with a guy named [name_m]King[/name_m] (middle name [name_m]Solomon[/name_m]), and after hearing the name on him for so long it just doesn’t feel that strange to me. He was a great guy. I vote to keep [name_m]King[/name_m] as is in the middle spot to honor your grandmother. Honestly, I feel like using [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] or [name_m]Kingsley[/name_m] or finding a name that means “king” gets rid of the family connection.

sis,

Thank you! I’m so picky with boy names and an over-thinker so it take forever to find names I love.

I worry because I just don’t like the male variant of her name. I love the girl names I picked to honor her so much so it feels like a let-down because I can’t figure out a boys name. I really want it to be a direct connection because I plan to use her middle name and a longer version of her first name if I had a daughter so [name_m]King[/name_m] is the only choice for me.

southern.maple,

That what I think also. Some people don’t mind it, but [name_m]King[/name_m] is directly connection to her and I prefer that. I know it’s not my favorite, but I really do want to honor her because she was such a great person. She wasn’t my biological grandmother, but she loved me and treated me no different than her biological grandchildren. It broke me when she passed away. :frowning:

I agree with both PPs. I also had a very strong connection with my grandmother & want to honor her with my naming choices.

I met a boy named [name_m]King[/name_m] in 6th grade & went to school with him for several years. He was handsome & well liked. I am from the South, & using maiden names as first names is very common, so it didn’t strike anyone as unusual. If anything, people thought it was a cool name. I see no problem with using it as a first or middle name.

GL!

I actually think the only one that doesn’t work is [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m], the rest of these are awesome names. I think you are making a great choice by using [name_m]King[/name_m] to honor your Grandmother, and another awesome choice by putting it in the 3rd position. 1st or 2nd would seem strange. My favorite of your choices is [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m], followed by [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m].

That is what sucks about it . [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m] is my number one name. I love it. I guess I’m going to have to have twins or more than one boy. :stuck_out_tongue:

[b]I’d love to hear more thoughts on [name_m]King[/name_m] and suggestions on combinations!

[/b]

[name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m] is great. I decided to play with your boy’s list a bit though…

[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]Walter[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Walter[/name_m] [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Michael[/name_m] [name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Conrad[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_u]Emmett[/name_u] [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Alaric[/name_m] [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Jeremiah[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Simon[/name_m] [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Malcolm[/name_m] [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]

Thank you southern.maple!

I really struggle to like [name_m]King[/name_m] as a name. If you don’t know it’s an honorific, yes it sounds very pretentious. Also the sound of king is quite harsh, sorry. Out of your combos I prefer [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m].

I really like [name_m]King[/name_m] as a fn and it’s a GP for a girl. I’m a Southerner so family surnames as first or middle names is completely normal to me.

[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m] is nice. He could go by [name_m]Jak[/name_m]

Thank you all! Keep the opinions coming. I love hearing different views on using [name_m]King[/name_m].

I think [name_m]King[/name_m] is pretty flipping cool! I like surname names on boys. [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m] and [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m] are great!

Hmm…
Names like [name_m]King[/name_m] aren’t a favourite of mine as it feels slightly pretentious and a little trashy. People named [name_m]Duke[/name_m] are normally the total opposite of [name_m]Duke[/name_m]'s if you know what I mean ; ) But in this case it’s lovely and the total opposite off pretentious/trashy in fact it’s endearing. Honouring names are awesome.

My favourite ‘[name_m]King[/name_m]’ combinations from your list are…
[name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m]

[name_m]Just[/name_m] because these names have a very strong, classic feel which dulls down on the [name_m]OTT[/name_m] factor of [name_m]King[/name_m] (if that makes sense) these names have a great feel and sound handsome.

[name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m] is definitely my favorite combination with [name_m]King[/name_m]. I love [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m], but it doesn’t have the best flow with [name_m]King[/name_m].

I would love to hear more opinions on the name [name_m]King[/name_m].

[name_m]King[/name_m] is a family surname on my father’s side so I’ve toyed with it as a middle too. I think it’s fine in the middle, and not tacky or pretentious at all. As a first name I’d avoid it

I think all your combos work. [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m] is a bit tricky because of the C and K so close together, they tend to blend in to one another when I say them. Would you be open to [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]King[/name_m] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m]/[name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Kingston[/name_m] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m]?

I would never use it as a first name. It’s just
I have thought of using it between [name_u]James[/name_u] and [name_m]Alaric[/name_m], but I don’t like the flow. I think [name_m]Henry[/name_m] [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] is the [name_m]King[/name_m] combination. I absolutely love it!

I think it is great, and it has a wonderful story behind it! The only name combo that you listed that doesn’t work well with [name_m]King[/name_m] in the second middle place is [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Alaric[/name_m] [name_m]King[/name_m], and that is because of [name_m]Alaric[/name_m]'s hard c sound meshing weirdly with the K in [name_m]King[/name_m].
