Let's talk about Marcel

I have always been attracted to this name, but I am still unsure about how usable it is. I think what I like most about Marcel is that it sounds so distinctive and different from other boys names. I wonder though, is it a little too fancy or feminine-sounding? I know it is definitely a masculine name, but I just worry that the sounds of the name are a little too distinctive or sound too much like feminine names. I would love to hear Berry opinions on Marcel!
Thanks!

Great middle name. There are stronger sounding [name_m]French[/name_m] names, if that’s the appeal. I’m crushing on [name_m]Vital[/name_m] (Vee-[name_u]TAL[/name_u]), and always [name_m]Louis[/name_m], [name_m]Etienne[/name_m], [name_m]Jacques[/name_m], and [name_u]Jean[/name_u] [name_m]Baptiste[/name_m] (despite the religious connotations).

[name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] is one of my guilty pleasures. It would sound awful with my LN so it’s off the list. I prefer [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] to [name_m]Marcel[/name_m].

[name_m]Marcel[/name_m] is strong, unusual, and will not likely run into pronunciation difficulties. I say likely, because my daughter has a very short, totally phonetically spelled name, and people screw it up all the time.

[name_f]Marcy[/name_f] is a really awesome NN for [name_m]Marcel[/name_m]/ [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m]. While [name_f]Marcy[/name_f] may be seen as a traditionally feminine name, it has such a sharpness to it that just sounds unisex to me.

I always thought [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] was a girl name…just because of the video [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] the snail with shoes. And I thought the snail was girl…but I could be wrong. Not my cup of tea personally, it’s not a horrible sounding name, it’s quite pretty. Feminine for my tastes though.

I think [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] does have a slight femininity to it. But very slight. I see it as a male name overall. It depends on if you’re bothered by that vibe or not (I’d guess it’s the -el ending that makes it seem gender fluid). If you’re not, I find it very wearable for a boy, as well as handsome.

I prefer [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m]. I personally don’t find [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] feminine at all. I understand how some can because of it’s similarity to [name_f]Marcy[/name_f] and the [name_f]Mar[/name_f]- beginning and the -el ending. I believe it’s a nice and strong name that isn’t used enough. I would love to meet a little [name_m]Marcel[/name_m].

I love finding another [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] fan!

thanks for all the feedback so far! Really?! [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] is the preferred name? I really like that name, but opted for [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] as a list contender since it seems more modern/wearable. Now y’all have me thinking it could actually be workable. Cool!

[name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] was deemed usable in a thread I made a little while ago.

I am totally on the [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] boat! Who wouldn’t be after watching [name_m]Richard[/name_m] [name_m]Burton[/name_m] play the role of [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m] Galieo, centurion of the [name_m]Roman[/name_m] guard in The [name_m]Robe[/name_m]?? Oh my… swoon! I have LOVED ever since.

This is exciting to see so much support for [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m]! Haha, @iwillpraise, that is cool that The [name_m]Robe[/name_m] movie is your main association with [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m], because I started liking the name after reading the book.

I think how usable it is may depend on where you live. If you’re in the US, there are parts of the country where it would likely be just fine and other places where it might invite ridicule.

I actually like it better than [name_m]Marcellus[/name_m]. I like the simplicity of [name_m]Marcel[/name_m] and while it does conjure visions of sentences that last for two pages, it strikes me as a strong yet intellectual name.

I’ve only known one [name_m]Marcel[/name_m]… a girl.
