DH and I will hopefully be pg within the next year. I want to get some feedback on my current list. First daughter is [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Jane[/name]. We usually just call her [name]Phoebe[/name] but a lot of family and friends call her [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Jane[/name], so a longer name could work. [name]Jane[/name] is my grandmother’s mn, so we plan to name all of our children with a different grandparent’s name in the middle. Last name sounds like Stray-can, so have to be careful with that initial ‘Str.’
Girls:
If we have a girl, the mn will either be [name]Jeanne[/name] for his grandmother, or [name]Eugenie[/name] (Llike this better!) as a combo of DH’s grandfather [name]Eugene[/name] and grandmother [name]Jeannie[/name].
Top 3:
[name]Blythe[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name]
[name]Delia[/name] [name]Jeanne[/name]
[name]Margo[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name] (always been my top name, but a friend just used it)
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name]
Also like but not sold on:
[name]Celia[/name]
[name]Clementine[/name] (DH loves, but would be stretching it in my area!)
[name]Esme[/name]
[name]Georgia[/name]
[name]Helena[/name] (Great-grandmother was [name]Helen[/name])
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Susannah[/name]
[name]Sylvia[/name]
Boys:
Most likely candidates for grandparent-honoring will be [name]Field[/name] and [name]Cannon[/name]. Other cool family names are [name]Collier[/name], [name]Elliott[/name], and [name]Stewart[/name].
Top 3:
[name]Thomas[/name] [name]Cannon[/name]
[name]Roger[/name] [name]Field[/name] (I love [name]Roger[/name] so much, I don’t care that y’all are going to make fun of me!!! =)
[name]Collier[/name] [name]Elliott[/name]
Also like:
[name]George[/name]
[name]Walter[/name]
What do you think? Faves? Suggestions? Refinements? Let me have it!!
Well, I’m a guy, but I’m really bored now that the kids are asleep and I’d love to help anyway, lol.
Out of your top choices, my absolute favorite is [name]Delia[/name] [name]Jeanne[/name]. [name]Delia[/name] is one of my favorite names of all time and I think it’s really underused. I prefer [name]Eugenie[/name] overall as a middle name but I think [name]Jeanne[/name] works better with [name]Delia[/name]. And I think [name]Delia[/name] and [name]Margo[/name] work best with [name]Phoebe[/name]. I’ve never been a big fan of [name]Blythe[/name] or [name]Sybil[/name], and to me they sound more formal/unusual compared to [name]Phoebe[/name]. Not sure though.
Out of the other ones you like, my favorites are [name]Celia[/name], [name]Esme[/name], [name]Helena[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name]. I think they sound best with [name]Phoebe[/name]. I think [name]Clementine[/name] would work too though, it’s just not really my thing. But [name]Helena[/name] is great because it honors a family member. I feel like [name]Celia[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] are really similar in style to [name]Phoebe[/name], if that matters to you. What about [name]Cecelia[/name] or [name]Sylvie[/name]? Those are my favorite versions of those names.
I really like all your boys names. [name]Lucky[/name] you have such nice family names! I love [name]Roger[/name] too so don’t worry. I probably wouldn’t pair [name]Collier[/name] with [name]Elliot[/name] only because of the double L’s, though. Were you thinking about [name]George[/name] and [name]Walter[/name] for middle names?
I like [name]Eugenie[/name]! Normally I’m not a fan of that Eu sound, but as it honours two grandparents, and is in the middle, I can’t help but think it sounds sweet.
Girls :
[name]Blythe[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name] - I love [name]Blythe[/name] as a sibling to [name]Phoebe[/name]! I also think this has quite good flow, considering one syllable first names make middle names difficult.
[name]Delia[/name] [name]Jeanne[/name] - wonderful flow. I can’t say that I love [name]Delia[/name], but it is a good name.
[name]Margo[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name] - I find that the vowel sounds on the end of [name]Margo[/name] and the beginning of [name]Eugenie[/name] run together slightly, which may or may not bother you. Personally, as much as I think [name]Margo[/name] is beautiful and glamorous, I would really think through whether you are willing to use the same name as a friend. [name]How[/name] close are you and do you see each other often? Would she mind? It might be better to save this choice for a possible future daughter, so that at least her [name]Margo[/name] and your [name]Margo[/name] would be a few years apart in age.
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name] - I think that, with [name]Eugenie[/name] in the middle, this double dose of musty vintage is perhaps too much.
Boys :
[name]Thomas[/name] [name]Cannon[/name] -[name]Thomas[/name] is a complete classic, and [name]Cannon[/name] is unusual and intriguing, spicing the name up a bit. This is my favourite of your top three.
[name]Roger[/name] [name]Field[/name] - I actually like the idea of [name]Roger[/name], I just can’t help but find it a bit … plain, when compared to other names, though. [name]Field[/name], however, is incredibly handsome and fun.
[name]Collier[/name] [name]Elliott[/name] - all of the Ls make this combination a little hard to say, but to be honest I prefer [name]Thomas[/name] as a first, anyway
[name]Walter[/name] [name]Field[/name] would be so handsome! [name]Walter[/name] is so handsome and vintage, and [name]Field[/name] is great fun.
[name]Do[/name] you like [name]Arthur[/name]? [name]Arthur[/name] [name]Field[/name] would be perfection, in my mind!
Thanks for your reply, Jayjoh!
I think, all things being equal, [name]Delia[/name] and [name]Margo[/name] are probably the best sibs for [name]Phoebe[/name], too. I worry about [name]Margo[/name] getting more popular because I seem to see it around a lot more. And there seems to be such an abundance of names ending in -ia, I wonder if [name]Delia[/name] will blend in eventually?
But I do like that [name]Delia[/name] and [name]Phoebe[/name] are both Greek names for the goddess of the moon. Kind of a cool connection.
As to your suggestions of [name]Sylvie[/name] and [name]Cecilia[/name], I do like [name]Sylvie[/name] as well but want to avoid an -ie inding if possible so it doesn’t sound so matchy. [name]Cecilia[/name] Stray-can is a bit heavy in the ‘S,’ no?
You are right about [name]Collier[/name] [name]Elliott[/name]. [name]Elliott[/name] was actually my grandmother’s middle name, so if we were to have a third daughter, that would be the middle. I just think it could work for a boy too, but [name]Field[/name] and [name]Cannon[/name] will be used first. Glacd you like [name]Roger[/name]! Gotta keep working on the hubs on that one!
Thanks [name]Auburn[/name]! I love the flow of [name]Blythe[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name], as well! I REALLy prefer [name]Eugenie[/name] in the middle over [name]Jeanne[/name], plus we get to knock out 2 of DH"S relatives and get back to using the important ones-MINE!! =) [name]Delia[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name] doesn’t work with the [name]Del[/name]-YA [name]Yu[/name]-genie Y sounds.
As to [name]Margo[/name], she’s not a really close friend, but we do have contact and it would bother me somewhat. So that’s a big factor.
Thanks for your nice words about [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Cannon[/name]! It is my favorite and I would use the nickname [name]Tom[/name], which I find so retro and impish.
have you considered using [name]June[/name] as a middle name? Maybe it’s a stretch, but I think it works as a combination of [name]Jeannie[/name] and [name]Eugene[/name]. [name]Just[/name] a thought…
([name]Sylvie[/name] [name]June[/name] would be beautiful!)
I personally love [name]Marlow/name and think it sounds great with [name]Phoebe[/name].
I have a [name]Phoebe[/name] too (one of seven in our town - ugh!) and I have a [name]Ted[/name] and a [name]Hadley[/name].
Another name I like is [name]Leda[/name] (the goddess who was [name]Phoebe[/name]'s Mom).
Other great Greek names:
[name]Helen[/name] ([name]Leda[/name]'s other daughter - as in [name]Helen[/name] of [name]Troy[/name]) - or even [name]Lena[/name]
[name]Daphne[/name]
[name]Eva[/name] (nice with a different ending)
Good luck!
I love [name]June[/name], but DH would never go for it. He’s already miffed that my grandmother got the first mn spot, so he’s claiming the next one. [name]Eugenie[/name] was as far as I could stretch it!
[name]Do[/name] we like [name]Delia[/name] on it’s own or is [name]Cordelia[/name] better? Are [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Jane[/name] and [name]Delia[/name] [name]Jeanne[/name] to close for comfort as far as first AND middle names having such similar meanings? Am I going to feel like a weirdo when everyone asks me if my next DD’s middle name will be [name]June[/name] or [name]Joan[/name].? Things to ponder…
[name]Delia[/name] and [name]Margo[/name] are my favorites with [name]Phoebe[/name]. I also love [name]George[/name] and [name]Walter[/name]. I’m not apposed to [name]Roger[/name] either. I actualy find it quite refreshing.
I vote [name]Roger[/name] & [name]Eugenie[/name] as a middle name out of your top likes. [name]Walter[/name] doesn”t seem to be used a lot anymore, which makes me like that one too. I love, [name]LOVE[/name], [name]Susannah[/name], [name]Sylvia[/name] and [name]Helena[/name]. For [name]Eugenie[/name] as a middle name it seems like almost anything ending with and A sounds good, and [name]Delia[/name] sounds great with it in my opinion. It would be like having two really great names instead of a great first name and a blah middle name. [name]Jeanne[/name] is too similar to [name]Jane[/name].
I totally agree that [name]Jeanne[/name] is a blah middle name. Esp. since I already used [name]Jane[/name]. You think [name]Delia[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name] sounds ok? I worry about the ‘ya’ ‘ya’ sounds back-to-back in the middle.
[name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Jane[/name] is wonderful! From your girl’s list, I really like [name]Delia[/name]. I think it’s lovely and goes very well with [name]Phoebe[/name]. I wouldn’t use [name]Jeanne[/name] as a middle name, since [name]Jane[/name] and [name]Jeanne[/name] are essentially the same name (both feminine forms of [name]John[/name]). [name]Delia[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name] is gorgeous! Are you pronouncing it the French way? I don’t think [name]Blythe[/name] or [name]Sybil[/name] really stand up to [name]Phoebe[/name]-- they seem clunky. From your long list, I adore [name]Celia[/name], [name]Helena[/name], [name]Ivy[/name], [name]Susannah[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name].
For a brother to [name]Phoebe[/name], I think [name]Walter[/name] or [name]Thomas[/name] are best. [name]Roger[/name] and [name]George[/name] sound middle aged next to [name]Phoebe[/name], and [name]Collier[/name] reminds me of ‘collar’ and ‘collie’. [name]Field[/name] in the middle sounds like the name of a stadium or something, but that could be just me. I like [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Field[/name] or [name]Thomas[/name] [name]Elliot[/name] the best.
Thanks for the vote of confidence on [name]Delia[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name]. I would love to pronounce it the French way, but I’m going to be honest. I’d get laughed out of town!
[name]Field[/name] in the middle IS reminiscent of a stadium! I would ideally love to choose one name from each grandfather in combination, but I think [name]Cannon[/name] [name]Field[/name] is a sure way to end up as a bad name anecdote on the Name Talk forum!
[name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Jane[/name] is an awesome name! Let’s see if I can help you with her sibling.
Girls:
I love [name]Eugenie[/name] as the middle name. [name]Jeanne[/name] is way too close to [name]Jane[/name] to work for sisters in my opinion.
My favorite of your girls’ combos is [name]Sybil[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name]. It’s quirky and fun like [name]Phoebe[/name], and both are of Greek origin if I’m not mistaken. I love [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Sybil[/name] together- I think they make a great sibset! [name]Blythe[/name] would be my second favorite.
Boys:
I’m liking [name]Cannon[/name] and [name]Stewart[/name] for middle names. I love [name]Roger[/name] too. I think [name]Roger[/name] [name]Cannon[/name] would be great, but it doesn’t go the best with [name]Phoebe[/name]. I like [name]Phoebe[/name] and [name]Walter[/name] together. It would be very refreshing to hear of a baby [name]George[/name] as well. These are my favorites from your boys’ choices in order of preference:
[name]Blyth[/name] in my opinion works VERY well with your daughters name but really all your choices are nice. I would not use [name]Margo[/name] if your friend has used it as it wont feel like your name anymore.
[name]Blythe[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name]-Dont like [name]Blythe[/name] much, really.
[name]Delia[/name] [name]Jeanne[/name]-[name]Jeanne[/name] is nice.
[name]Margo[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name]-I like this name!
[name]Sybil[/name] [name]Eugenie[/name]-Not tottally sold on it, but it is a nice combo.
I think that when I have kids I will name my daughters [name]Kasey[/name] [name]Michelle[/name], and [name]Hayden[/name] [name]Marie[/name]. [name]Kasey[/name] has been a favourite for a long time, and [name]Michelle[/name] is a name of someone in my family. I really like [name]Hayden[/name] and [name]Marie[/name] is my next sister’s name is going to be [name]Maria[/name], and I absolutely hate [name]Maria[/name] so I changed it to [name]Marie[/name].
