I am on the fence about [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] (pronounced [name_m]Zan[/name_m],thee, for those who haven’t heard it before)
I love how happy and lively it sounds. I love the meaning (“yellow”) because it just reminds me of sunshine and summer. I love the combination of [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] [name_f]Jane[/name_f].
But that damn letter X. I can’t get over how trendy the letter X is. Also in general i prefer letters with curves in them. My two biggest concerns with thus name is that 1) people will think the name is made up and trendy or 2) that people will think the name feels outer-spacey and sci-fi-ish.
I’ve considered using the alternate spelling Zanthie, but I’m not overly fond of the letter Z either.
What do you guys think? [name_f]Do[/name_f] i need to worry about [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]?
Well, I like names that have x’s and z’s (and v’s) in them as long as they’re not mispelled to cram them in. It gives them a bit of strength compared to the current thing for vowels everywhere, I think.
I don’t think X is as trendy as mispelling an X name with a Z, honestly. Zanthie is honestly much worse than [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] to me. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I like [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] (not [name_f]Zoey[/name_f]) and [name_f]Zara[/name_f]. Does that make sense?
If I was worried about a name I liked being thought to be made up, the very last thing I would do would be to respell it. I’d rather just say “oh, actually, it’s from Greek myth” and leave it at that.
I do like the sunshine-y, yellow meaning. I must admit I like [name_f]Jonquil[/name_f]/[name_f]Marigold[/name_f]/[name_f]Saffron[/name_f] for similar reasons.
While they’re not ideal with my surname, I also just love Greek “ee” sound ending names. If I was worried about them being recognized as legitimate though, [name_f]Penelope[/name_f]/[name_f]Zoe[/name_f]/[name_f]Chloe[/name_f]/[name_f]Daphne[/name_f]/[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] are all much more familiar to the mainstream than [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]/[name_f]Calanthe[/name_f]/[name_f]Ianthe[/name_f]/[name_f]Persephone[/name_f]. I like some of each group and dislike one of each set so I’m not using “more familiar” as a good or bad thing.
[name_f]Xanthe[/name_f]… Undeniably a cool name, with a sweet meaning, and there’s that beautiful X. Personally, I think of xanthum gum. Sorry, not sure why it’s such a strong association for me, but can’t get past that. Definitely wouldn’t spell it with a Z though. Heavens no.
[name_f]Evanthe[/name_f] is another one with the same graceful nthe-ending.
I adore [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f], it’s near the top of my girls’ list. I like its sound, that zannn bit at the part sounds very calm to me, but then the “thee” at the end is sort of playful. I can’t articulate it very well. I love it with the nickname [name_m]Xan[/name_m], or [name_f]Thea[/name_f], I suppose!
I love how [name_f]Xanthe[/name_f] sounds but I don’t really like how it is spelled. For me the X makes it look at bit evil but the sounding of the name is so nice
