Let's Talk: Artemis

A little note to start off…

‘I want to thank each and every one of you who responded to my last thread about choosing a new name. I loved the words of wisdom I got with some of the replies, especially @jonquils who spoke about growing into a name and @electric_sheep who hit right on the dot with that last paragraph…’

That said, my list is ever expanding (as @electric_sheep said) and I’ve been experimenting with another name.

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u].

You guys are all lovers of names so I suspect you already know the backstory on the name. So my question today is… Is [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] too bold? If you’ve seen my other threads you’d know I have no qualms about using GP names but even I’m questioning if I could pull [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] off.

I do think that with this name you’d have to have a nickname. I’m not too fond of Arti, [name_m]Art[/name_m], [name_u]Ari[/name_u], or [name_f]Missy[/name_f] but I do love [name_u]Misha[/name_u], Misya (/meese•ya/) and [name_f]Aris[/name_f] (/ar•ess/)

For middle name(s) I’m thinking…

  • [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Zoraida[/name_f] [name_f]Lilly[/name_f] (or just [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Lilly[/name_f]?)
  • [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] Dracaena (/dra•kay•na/)
  • [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Saskia[/name_f]
  • [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Io[/name_f] [name_u]Rey[/name_u]
  • [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Orenthia[/name_f]
  • [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]

Thoughts?

Tbh I think it’s too much for me personally. The thing with using a guilty pleasure name…if it’s for a baby, they grow with the name. To take on that name as an adult would be much harder. I’m also not sure how it goes with your sisters names, if I’m remembering correctly.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned my sisters name’s? Or have I? Maybe once…
My sister’s names are [name_f]Tabitha[/name_f] and [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f] ([name_f]Polly[/name_f]) so I mean… I think it’d go well but that’s just me.

I don’t talk to them, I haven’t spoken to them in years, they were rarely in my life, and I’m not on good terms with them so even if it didn’t go with their names- I wouldn’t care. I’m an only child as far as I’m concerned.

I think you could pull [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] off - of course, you’d have to wear it with a lot of confidence, but I think it could work. While it’s bold and distinctive, it’s also easy to pronounce and spell and I think a lot of people would be familiar with it.
[name_u]Misha[/name_u] is a great nn! Temi, [name_f]Emmy[/name_f], Tizzy and [name_f]Ami[/name_f] could be alternatives

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] or [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] are my faves for middles - they give me different vibes though. [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] is strong - there’s something quite warrior like about it, something enduring, confident and vibrant. [name_f]Lily[/name_f] softens [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], brings out its gentler qualities - there’s something fresh and kindly about it - so I guess it depends what you’re going for

Yes!! So glad you like Dracaena! It could be classified as a nature name AND a Greek Mythology name as it’s a species of plant (which I happen to have all around my house) and the Greek spelling Drakaina- which in Greek Myth is a female serpent or dragon who have been known to have humanlike features… though some might not like that association lol

I’m really stuck between [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Io[/name_f] [name_u]Rey[/name_u] ([name_f]May[/name_f] the fourth be with you) and [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] Dracaena… and maybe also [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_u]Sasha[/name_u] (love that suggestion)

I don’t know… I think [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] might possibly be the one. I’m gonna wait a week or so and If I still feel the same way I’m gonna add it to my permanent list (the list that I’m eventually going to choose from)

I don’t consider [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] GP, and I think it is perfectly wearable. I really like the combination [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] that you had listed.

For me, I think [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] would be a bit much.

But, it sounds like you really love it, and when you love a name, it makes it a lot easier to pull it off I think. So I’m on the side of - it’s daring, but it’s your name, so if you love it, go for it! I’m also a strong believer of trying names out - ie. when you order coffee at starbucks and they ask for your name, tell them [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] and see how it feels!

As for middles, I like [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Lily[/name_f] or [name_f]Theodora[/name_f]!

I love [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] for you!! Is it bold? Yes but so are you. I feel like changing a name is bold. I’ve never personally done it but if you that unhappy with your name you should go with what makes you happy. All your options have been bold. I am guessing a bold memorable name that is easy enough to pronounce will be an easier transition than say [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. I say that because I have two friends who did a name change…[name_f]Maria[/name_f] and [name_f]Bunny[/name_f]. Poor [name_f]Maria[/name_f], I still slip her birth name here and there. [name_f]Bunny[/name_f] was a much easier transition. Anyways [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] Dracaena is my favorite. I like [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] too! I say go bold! Best of luck

I love [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], both the name and the goddess, and it seems like it would really suit you. I don’t think you would just have to make sure you always said it confidently, but I think as long as you do that, most names are easy enough to pull off.

My personal favourite nickname would be [name_u]Artis[/name_u], or [name_f]Aris[/name_f]. As for middle names, I’d be tempted to go with something a bit more down to [name_f]Earth[/name_f]. My choice would be [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Theodora[/name_f].

I also don’t think the names of your siblings have any importance when you’re naming yourself as an adult. I don’t even think they’re that important when you’re naming children.

I love [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]! What an awesome name! I imagine adventurous, brave and strong women who love the nature every time I see this name. The mythological connection gives [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] a mysterious touch, which I like. [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] is beautiful, unique and so underused! I adore [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] and [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] [name_f]Theodora[/name_f].
