I’ve been a fan of the name ever since I first read it in a book as a middle schooler. I’ve hardly seen it mentioned since though.
Besides the book and the Sound of [name]Music[/name] character, I don’t think I’ve encountered or heard of anyone, fictional or real, with it.
What are your thoughts on the name?
I’m personally a big fan of the meaning, and it has a slight artistic air to it. It seems to be a multi-faced name, in that it can be worn on any appearance or personality.
I like that it’s similar to names that I already like: [name]Elisabeth[/name], [name]Elisa[/name], [name]Elise[/name], [name]Eloise[/name].
I think it would fit nicely into my SOs family since he’s largely of [name]German[/name] ancestry, and his mother’s name is [name]Elise[/name].
EDIT: Pronunciation, I’ve been saying it Lee-zill, is that correct? Or is it Lye-zill?
[name]Liesel[/name] is a really beautiful name! It is mild and slightly quirky all at the same time. I love the lilting quality that it has and I would be so excited to meet someone named [name]Liesel[/name]!
I think [name]Liesel[/name] is adorable! It has a lovely sound and just exudes sweetness to me. My only issue is that I cannot picture it on an adult. I always see a little girl. For me it just doesn’t age well I guess. I really have no reason for it other than the fact that I just can’t picture it. I would love to met a [name]Liesel[/name] though
Beautiful name. Not common but recognizable. There is an Australian swimmer with the name, but she spells it differently. I know a teenager with [name]Lisel[/name] as a middle name.
I’ve loved the name [name]Liesel[/name] for awhile now. I do have a couple problems with it, though which is probably why I won’t use it in the future (and DH doesn’t like it). Having a name all my life that no one can pronounce or spell, I find it difficult to put that burden on a child. [name]Liesel[/name] would have a lot of problems with this as I don’t think most people are familiar with the name, and definitely wouldn’t know how to spell it. I am even not entirely sure if it’s pronounced [name]Lee[/name]-ZUL or [name]Lee[/name]-SUL. So for those reasons I wouldn’t use it, but I do [name]LOVE[/name] the name!
It’s pretty. I’ve always said it [name]LEE[/name]-zuhl, but that’s just how it’s said in The Sound of [name]Music[/name]. I find it hard to picture on someone, actually, but it is a pretty name. Plus, I love The Sound of [name]Music[/name]! I watched it, like, literally every day when I was 5 or so.
My best friend had a good friend named [name]Lieselotte[/name], which I think is lovely, too, but I’ve never met a just [name]Liesel[/name] (or even [name]Liesl[/name], which I’ve heard is the more authentically [name]German[/name] spelling?).
I know someone named [name]Liesel[/name]. She pronounces it LIE - zul. But I’ve always thought it was [name]LEE[/name]-zuhl. Probably because of the Sound Of [name]Music[/name].
I do know of the name [name]Lieselotte[/name], which is lovely, but it’s a bit too complex for my liking. Perhaps as a middle though…
As for the spelling of [name]Liesel[/name]/[name]Liesl[/name], I first saw the [name]Liesel[/name] spelling, and then later learned of [name]Liesl[/name] due to the movie.
[name]Liesel[/name] therefore seems “right” to me, and more complete looking with the second e. [name]Liesl[/name] is probably more authentic, but the -sl trips me up all the time.
I love this name! I know a teenager named [name]Liesel[/name], but I’m not sure how she spells it. I can see it at any age: infant, teen, working mom, or grandma, but I tend to picture someone of [name]German[/name] heritage. I think another recent forum about [name]Liesel[/name]/[name]Liesl[/name] said it is seen as dated in Germany.

I know a 3 or 4 year old little girl named [name]Liesel[/name]. I think it’s super super cute. I don’t remember how the family pronounces it. I think I would pronounce it “[name]LEE[/name]-sull”, soft s sound.
Choosing a name for baby is an easy task because online baby name directory available on the Internet. I really like liesel name. It’s very beautiful when speaking this name.
I know a middle aged woman named [name]Liesl[/name]. She pronounces it like how it is pronounced in Sound of [name]Music[/name]. I like it! I don’t think pronunciation would be too much of an issue due to the Sound of [name]Music[/name] reference. I do tend to lean more to the [name]Liesl[/name] spelling although I agree with some posters that it does look incomplete. [name]Liesel[/name] spelling is to close to diesel for my preference.
I read this name in a book as well - The Book Thief, by any chance? - and say it to rhyme with diesel. My only other association is an Australian Paralympic gold medal sailor who I met on a train last summer who spelt her name [name]Liesl[/name]. I think it’s a really nice name, whichever spelling you go for.

[name]Liesl[/name] is growing on me, but it still feels incomplete and like a typo. If I used it as a middle then [name]Liesl[/name] would be easier.
I completely agree with Jeska about the spelling. I find [name]Liesl[/name] much more graceful, while [name]Liesel[/name] reminds me of diesel. [name]Liesl[/name] is so sweet. Makes me want to whistle “I am sixteen going on seventeen…”
In [name]German[/name], it is pronounced [name]LEE[/name]-zul, and definitely NOT LYE-zul. I prefer the more authentic [name]Liesl[/name] to [name]Liesel[/name], though both are okay. It’s a lovely name, even if it is a bit dated in Germany. [name]Just[/name] don’t spell it Leisel, as that would give you the LYE-zul pronunciation in [name]German[/name].
