I’m thinking about changing my daughters name. We named her [name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] (pronounced Lie-la) but people are constantly pronouncing it as Lil-a/Lee-la/Laila. No one can spell it either and we already have a surname you have to spell out. I would like her to have a name people can recognize and pronounce straight away. [name_f]My[/name_f] son is [name_u]Leo[/name_u] and no one has ever gotten his name wrong. I’m thinking of changing the name to [name_f]Lola[/name_f] (similar name with only one spelling and pronunciation) or her middle name, [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. Which name would you change it to or would you leave it as [name_f]Lila[/name_f]?
How old is your daughter?
Personally, I’d keep Lila; it’s a name that getting more popular so people will become more familiar with it in the future.
Apart from that, [name_u]Leo[/name_u] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] are a bit close for me as sibling names if both are full names as both feature the L and O so prominently (as they’re such short names).
Would you consider changing the spelling to [name_f]Lyla[/name_f]?
She’s 10 months old so I want to make a decision before she is 1. Thanks for your thoughts
Yes I have thought about changing the spelling but there is a ‘Lyla’ in another room at her daycare who always gets ‘Layla’ so so might have similar issues with that spelling.
[name_u]Leo[/name_u] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] are too close imo
Id be inclined to make the spelling change to [name_f]Lyla[/name_f] or [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] to make it more intuitive.
I also think it’s rare for any name to not occasionally be heard/seen/pronounced wrong… lots of names rhyme or are spelled similar to another so it may happen no matter what. [name_f]Lola[/name_f] might still get [name_f]Layla[/name_f] or even [name_f]Lila[/name_f] sometimes.
Good luck!
I would also say change the spelling to [name_f]Lilah[/name_f], if anything. [name_f]Lila[/name_f] is so much prettier than [name_f]Lola[/name_f], imo! And honestly, it seems like a shame to change a beautiful (and pretty straightforward!) name because people don’t put in the effort to get it right. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if some people struggle, they’ll get it if they’re going to be around her enough.
I’d keep it as [name_f]Lila[/name_f]. The name is getting more popular, so hopefully people will catch on (as they did with [name_f]Isla[/name_f] -which I know got Iz-luh when it first became more familiar)
I think [name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] is so pretty ! I personally wouldn’t change it
It’s lovely, I wouldn’t change it. So much admin and I’m sure whatever it was changed to would still get the odd incorrect pronunciation - you might as well have the name you love!
I wouldn’t change her name and agree with the comments made by @liberty.mairead and @OpheliaFlora. People may mispronounce names they aren’t familiar with but a polite and simple correction is all it takes, and done, they know how to say it. I think the spelling [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] may be more intuitive, although not necessary.
I’d keep it as [name_f]Lila[/name_f]. Any name can (and will) be misspelled and mispronounced, although some more than others. [name_f]Lila[/name_f] is a beautiful name, and it’s already hers!
I LOVE [name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f] and much prefer it to [name_f]Lola[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Lila[/name_f] is a common name and most people will get it right.
I would keep it [name_f]Lila[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. I think [name_f]Lola[/name_f] is too similar to [name_u]Leo[/name_u]. I have taught for many years and only had one [name_f]Lila[/name_f]. It was spelled [name_f]Lila[/name_f]. So I think you have a beautiful name spelled correctly.
People will find a way to pronounce ANYTHING wrong. I’ve seen Leilani’s get Liliana, Anthony’s get Andrew, and Anna’s (Ann-ah) get Anna (Ah-nah). With my name, there’s the American/English pronunciation, which means the true Italian way constantly is messed up. My own aunt can’t even say my name correctly. So don’t worry about the pronunciation, because she’s only ten months! There will be so much more interactions with her that will have her name said correctly. Lie-la is more straightforward where I’m from and Lee-la and Lay-la are normally spelled Lela and Layla. I think that Lila is prettier than Lola and Lola and Leo are a little too close for me.
I prefer [name_f]Lila[/name_f]
Your little one is 10 months old so she will recognise her name I know it’s only one letter change but I’m not sure if I would change her name to [name_f]Lola[/name_f].
[name_f]Lila[/name_f] is gorgeous! Also increasing in popularity she’s not unusual I’m not sure why people are struggling with [name_f]Lila[/name_f] seems bizarre. [name_f]Lila[/name_f] is so recognisable such a lovely name really bright and sparkly. [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter is [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] often mistakenly called [name_f]Lila[/name_f] as that’s more familiar. I know it’s tricky as my daughter name is unheard of in the UK along with having a hyphenated surname that consists of two names not familiar to [name_f]English[/name_f] people (one name is Ugandan the other Irish) so she has three names to spell. It’s long at times and after a trip to the hospital I doubt my decision to name her [name_f]Lilia[/name_f] as her name is just butchered terribly but then I look at all the pluses of using a name you love those doubts disappear. Honestly you love the name [name_f]Lila[/name_f] stick with her she’s beautiful.
I named my daughter [name_f]Lilah[/name_f]. The H helps.
