Lilias? And other Lil- names

I mentioned this in my last post, but I think it needs its own thread. [name_f]Lilias[/name_f] (also spelled [name_f]Lileas[/name_f]) is a Scottish form of [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. Because it’s rare everywhere else, I’m having trouble finding reactions to this name.

What kind of vibe does it give you?

[name_m]How[/name_m] would you say it? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you find it hard to say?

[name_f]Do[/name_f] you prefer [name_f]Lilias[/name_f] or [name_f]Lileas[/name_f]?

On behindthename.com, the comments are really positive. But I checked that site where actual name-bearers answer a survey, and they generally did not like having this name. That concerns me- I don’t mind if some people think my names are weird, but I’d like it to be pretty/historic/mockery-proof enough for the wearers to say, “I still like my name.”

Also, nns? I might use nn [name_f]Lily[/name_f], despite its popularity. Or, if I used [name_f]Lilias[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f], I might call her “Lieve,” meaning dear/loved.

[name_f]Lilias[/name_f] feels strong yet gentle. In color terms, a light purple. I pronounce it like lih-lee-us. And I prefer [name_f]Lilias[/name_f], I believe it was the name of [name_m]Colin[/name_m]'s mother in the [name_f]Secret[/name_f] Garden. One of my favorite childhood novels.

As for nicknames, perhaps Lissy? A play on some of the letters.

I like it but with a three year old I would find myself tripping up over the [name_f]Lela[/name_f], [name_f]Lyla[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Layla[/name_f] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] we already know - it would be an auto correct nightmare too. Try it out in Starbucks and see how you go is my advice.

Prefer [name_f]Lilias[/name_f] and love all versions: [name_f]Lela[/name_f], [name_f]Lyla[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Layla[/name_f], [name_f]Lola[/name_f], [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_f]Lulu[/name_f], [name_f]Lala[/name_f]…

Prefer [name_f]Lilias[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Lilias[/name_f] [name_f]Eve[/name_f] nn Lieve!
To me [name_f]Lilias[/name_f] seems airy in a good way…
Of course, you would have to take into consideration that there are a lot of other [name_f]Lil[/name_f]-names that are more common and more widely known as I’m sure you already have. She might have to explain her name… But [name_f]Lilias[/name_f] is beautiful and not difficult, just quite unheard of.

I really like the name, it’s a more unknown but really beautiful variation of a common name. The only concern I would have is that people may mispronounce it or may not know how to pronounce it.

Thanks so much, everyone! I’m delighted with all the positive feedback.

Can I ask what it means to try a name out in Starbucks? I would guess the idea is to give it as your name, to be written on the drink… but what are you looking for, exactly? Is it mostly a gauge for the difficulty of pronunciation and spelling?

Is there anyone who dislikes it? Pronunciation/spelling are indeed good points (as are the confusion with all the double L’s), but I’m curious whether anyone just hates the sound or has a negative association.

Also, has anyone heard of a real life [name_f]Lilias[/name_f]?

It was indeed the mother in The [name_f]Secret[/name_f] Garden (total plus for me - I love literary names) and a character in a Sir [name_m]Walter[/name_m] [name_m]Scott[/name_m] novel (just like [name_f]Rowena[/name_f] and [name_m]Cedric[/name_m]! I’m such a nerd).
