Lilith - Looking Past The Connections?

Is [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] completely unusable because of it’s connections?

Over the past few weeks I’ve grown to love [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. I’m aware of the bad connections, but I can’t seem to shake it. My mind keeps going back to [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. I wonder if it would ever be possible to others to look past it’s history and just see the name. Would [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] seem unfair in a sibling set of [name_f]Davina[/name_f], [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]?

Suggestions on names that would go with Lilith as a middle or sibling name would be appreciated.

I truly adore the look and sound of [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], too. And still wrestle myself with her associations.

To me, she needs really offbeat-spunky sidekicks: [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Magda[/name_f]/[name_f]Magdalene[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Madeleine[/name_f], [name_f]Rosamund[/name_f] vs. [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f].

i love love love [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] this name. if [name_f]Lily[/name_f] wasn’t so stinking popular it would be in my top 3 for sure. i think that the history of [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] has been so contorted and misunderstood that with giving it we can be giving a history lesson and reviving a great name to long admonished. [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] was really a great powerful pro women character! lets honor her!

I would love to hear more opinions about [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. Thank you everyone who responded so far.

I plan on using [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] for one of my future daughters. To be honest, the fact that [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], [name_m]Adam[/name_m]'s first wife, refused to submit to him is a pro for me. The woman was then portrayed to be a demon by a male dominated society. I think [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is a perfectly usable, beautiful and kick-ass name for a girl

I agree with sweekune. That fact that [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] wanted to be her own woman seems strong to me, not demonic like the men who wrote the thing portrayed her. I like the name. It’s one of my favorite [name_f]Lil[/name_f]- names.

I know someone whose middle name is [name_f]Lilith[/name_f]. Her first is [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] so it’s a little too much “bad girl” in one name for me, but it is being used! :stuck_out_tongue:

For middles:

[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Catherine[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Jade[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Joy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Ivy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Cecilia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Viviana[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Anastasia[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Delphine[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Margo[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Seraphine[/name_f]

And my guilty pleasure combo with [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] Hecate (heh-[name_u]KAY[/name_u]-tee). It sounds awesome but Hecate is a dark goddess and [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] already has some dark connotations :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s great to see that other don’t see it as a really evil name. It’s my favorite Lil- name.

Dantea, I absolutely adore Lilith Seraphine. So gorgeous.
Thank you!

I take all Biblical references when it comes to the portrayal of women with a grain of salt. We have to remember that the great book was written by men for men. It was written in a time of extreme patriarchy when woman were the property of the men in the family. Society had a strict code of behaviour and any woman who defied the “rules” suffered the consequences. [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] was a strong woman and that didn’t sit well with the males in charge. Instead of celebrating her strength, the men demonized her (probably in the hope that other women would know their place and not make any trouble). Many females have suffered the same fate over the years. I think Liliith is quite pretty and definitely usable. [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] [name_f]Seraphine[/name_f] is gorgeous!

[name_u]Mischa[/name_u], I never knew that about the bible. I’m not religious so I don’t know much about it. That is good to know now. I love [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], but I was worried that people would automatically relate to it’s demonic connections more than the name itself.

I’d like to add that [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is not actually mentioned anywhere in the Bible.
The legends and stories written about her are completely separate of the Biblical record.

I would also disagree that the Bible was written for men. There is very little anywhere in the Bible that is directed to a specific gender, and the majority of the stories and writings are equally valuable for everyone. Certainly portions of the Bible record stories from times and places where women were not valued as much as men (as do most ancient writings), but the Bible itself does not devalue women.

I really like the name [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] and would love to see it used. I don’t think the stories are well known enough that it would cause a girl bearing that name to have any problems.

@kala_way makes a good point - nowhere in the [name_m]Christian[/name_m] Bible is [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] mentioned. Her name appears in the Talmud and maybe a couple of other Jewish texts, but in terms of Christianity, [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is only alluded to.

I love the name, and I do think [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] was unfairly demonized. To me, naming my daughter after a woman who’s most famous for refusing to be subservient to a man would be a statement of power.

For me, I wouldn’t use it. I think the name is lovely, but you have the original connection and also the dreadful [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] from [name_m]Frasier[/name_m].

I love [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] and all it’s associations.

I like [name_f]Lilith[/name_f], and I did know about her history. That said, I am not in love with the -th at the end - I feel like it’s a little bit hard to pronounce? Probably just a personal thing, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Another [name_f]Lil[/name_f]- name that’s a bit more unusual is [name_f]Lilia[/name_f], which I also really like.

I was going to mention but I forgot, I also love Lilit. It’s a version of [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] and it’s just sort of cool and streamlined to me. I’m using it in my novel.

No [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] in the Bible or Torah. It’s a story in Jewish mythology. I think it’s fine to use. I’m a [name_m]Christian[/name_m] and wouldn’t think anything about it.

My first thought is [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] from [name_m]Frasier[/name_m]. I think it’s a cute name, but [name_f]Lily[/name_f] is so popular. Not sure about any other associations. I don’t really let bad associations ruin a name for me. I mean, [name_f]Pandora[/name_f] is still a huge favourite.

Okay, just researched and found out [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is part of a religious story. As a devout Atheist, this does not bother me even slightly. Besides, in the story she’s punished for not obeying her husband. Sounds like my kind of woman! I’d rather be a [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] than an [name_f]Eve[/name_f]

Me too. While [name_f]Eve[/name_f] is a lovely name I just don’t like it. Thank you everyone!

Argh! [name_f]Lilith[/name_f] is such a pretty name, but I can’t get past the connections! :frowning: The worst women sometimes have the best names…
