[name]Hi[/name], all! DH and I are starting to think about TTC in the next few months, so I’m even more name-obsessed than usual. I’ve been looking for a great girl’s name for awhile now, and came across [name]Lilla[/name], pronounced lil-a, not lie-la. It’s Italian for lilac (my husband is Italian). [name]Lily[/name] has always been one of our favorite names, but I’m a little hesitant to use it, seeing how popular it is. What do you think of [name]Lilla[/name]? I suppose we might call her [name]Lily[/name] as well. We have one son, [name]Vincent[/name], called [name]Vince[/name] or [name]Vinny[/name]. [name]Vince[/name] and [name]Lilla[/name]?
We’ve been considering using [name]Hermione[/name] as a middle name, as we are both big fans of [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] and just think it’s a beautiful name anyways. If it’s Italian, then it should be “[name]LEE[/name]-la”, not “lil-a”, no?
I think [name]Lilla[/name] ([name]LEE[/name]-la) is pretty, and while it does look like “lil-a” in English, if you’re claiming it’s for your husband’s Italian heritage, then it doesn’t work, in my opinion. I do think [name]LEE[/name]-la is nice, though! And lil-a is all right. I had a roommate from [name]Italy[/name] a few years ago and her name is [name]Dalila[/name] (da-lee-la) which I think is lovely.
[name]Lilla[/name] [name]Hermione[/name] is too much [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], I think. Plus, I really dislike [name]Hermione[/name] sorry
[name]Leona[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] are nice. I think [name]Vince[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] are made for each other!
I love [name]Lilla[/name]! And I think the “true Italian pronunciation” issue that pp was talking about is just an accent thing. I’m not sure it goes with [name]Vincent[/name] and [name]Walter[/name] super well, but to be honest, I have never been one for “sibset matching.” I think you name your kids what you want them to be named and don’t worry about going together. And [name]Lilla[/name] is such a great find; I’d have a hard time NOT using it!
And I don’t follow [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name], so if I met a little [name]Lilla[/name] Hermoine (or [name]Lily[/name] Hermoine), I would recognize Hermoine and wonder if it came from the movie, but I wouldn’t think anything of [name]Lilla[/name] or [name]Lily[/name] (except that they’re both great names). I’d say it’s really just a bonus that it’s the Italian word for lilac, we’re not specifically looking to honor his heritage. Any other thoughts on [name]Lilla[/name]?
What do you think of [name]Lillia[/name]? I think I prefer that to [name]Lilla[/name], personally… I also really love [name]Sylvia[/name], and I agree with lucialucentum that it goes perfectly with [name]Vincent[/name]!
I like [name]Lilia[/name] (spelled with one 2 l’s, instead of 3), but my husband isn’t a big fan, he thinks it sounds a bit made-up. I like the soft sound of [name]Lilla[/name]. [name]Glad[/name] to know not everyone is jumping right to [name]Lily[/name] [name]Potter[/name] when they hear [name]Lilla[/name] [name]Hermione[/name]. I think it’s definitely going on the list!
I disagree on the pron. Italian pronunciation and English pronunciation of a word like ‘[name]Lilla[/name]’ are not really comparable, because the accents make a big difference. Nobody who doesn’t actually speak Italian is going to pronounce it the way an Italian does, anyway, but I think it’s closer to [name]LIL[/name]-luh (but with a more lilting inflection) than to a long [name]LEE[/name]-luh.
I think [name]Lilla[/name] [name]Hermione[/name] is outstanding - absolutely gorgeous. [name]Do[/name] it!
We have a [name]Lilla[/name] ([name]Lil[/name]-a) and a [name]Vivienne[/name] nn [name]Vivi[/name]. So this all sounds very similar to [name]Lilla[/name] and [name]Vinny[/name]. I am now however considering changing [name]Lilla[/name]'s name so that [name]Lilla[/name] can be a nickname instead of a full name, perhaps [name]Dalila[/name] could work for you and then you don’t have to deal with the spelling pronunciation issue. Also [name]Lilla[/name] gets called [name]Lila[/name] (LI-la) most of the time by strangers. [name]Just[/name] some food for thought.

Also, what do you think about the popularity of [name]Lily[/name] in your area? I know it’s #15 currently, but I actually only know one (and she lives across the country from me). [name]Will[/name] [name]Lilla[/name] get lost in the “sea” of Lilys (lilies? ) I keep trying to find a name I love more than [name]Lily[/name] because I really don’t want a super popular name, but every time I hear it, I swoon. [name]Lilla[/name] is a good compromise for me, but I still worry about it.
