Lillian or Lilian?

Which spelling do you prefer? [name_m]Will[/name_m] [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] have too many spelling issues?

I slightly prefer [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. Unlike [name_f]Lilly[/name_f]/[name_f]Lily[/name_f], I much prefer [name_f]Lily[/name_f].

Of the two I prefer [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] – it seems more balanced. If it were in the running, I would pick [name_f]Liliane[/name_f].

Thanks to both of you! I like them both a lot, but may be leaning towards [name_f]Lilian[/name_f]. But I am still not sure.

I like both. If you intend to call her [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], I’d go with that spelling; if she’ll end up [name_f]Lily[/name_f], I prefer [name_f]Lilian[/name_f].

I’m a [name_f]Lilian[/name_f], so I just thought I would weigh in. I’ve never gone by [name_f]Lily[/name_f]. People constantly ask about the spelling up front regardless, as they simply aren’t sure how to spell it straight off the bat. I do get assumptions either way (from people who don’t know me, I seem to get an equal smattering of Lilians and Lillians), but honestly 9 times out of 10 people ask. I think it’s easy enough either way to say “one L in the middle” or “two L’s in the middle.” I honestly think based on how many people ask about the spelling they either aren’t familiar with the name to begin with or are familiar enough to know that there are multiple spellings. Very few people actually assume that it’s [name_f]Lillian[/name_f] even though that’s the more common variant historically by far. So I think the spelling issues go both ways. It has never bothered me at all. I think it’s a lovely name. I have always enjoyed being a [name_f]Lilian[/name_f].

I prefer the look of [name_f]Lillian[/name_f], and that’s how Id intuitively spell it, if I heard it out loud. [name_m]Even[/name_m] if she gets nn [name_f]Lily[/name_f], I don’t think how the nickname is written is as important as the full name.

I vastly prefer the look of [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. That’s the default spelling for me so often if it’s spelled [name_f]Lilian[/name_f], I have to go back and correct myself.

[name_f]Lillian[/name_f] was my great-aunt’s name, with two l’s.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to answer! I think [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] is probably what I’ll go with, even though most of you prefer [name_f]Lillian[/name_f]. After thinking about it, I prefer the look of [name_f]Lilian[/name_f]. Both are beautiful, but I think I like [name_f]Lilian[/name_f] better.
