So…[name]Lincoln[/name] is one of two boy names that my husband and I love. BUT, it is going to the girls? Would YOU name a girl [name]Lincoln[/name]? [name]Do[/name] you think loads of people will start naming girls [name]Lincoln[/name]?
I don’t know I do prefer unisex names on girls. [name]Lincoln[/name] is a very masculine name but could be cool on a girl I suppose
As [name]Blade[/name] pointed out earlier, [name]Lincoln[/name] is firstly a place and therefore not inherently gendered.
But I still say YUCK wholeheartedly.
Isn’t [name]Lincoln[/name] first a surname, and then a place? [name]Abraham[/name] [name]Lincoln[/name] (not to mention his parents, and their parents, etc.) was born nearly 50 years before [name]Lincoln[/name], Nebraska, was established as a town (I checked!). [name]Don[/name]'t suppose that makes it any less unisex, but as surnames have tended to be passed down through sons (while this still happens with women, particularly in the south, this is why everyone insists [name]Emerson[/name], [name]Avery[/name], [name]Aubrey[/name], [name]Harper[/name], etc. have masculine origins), it skewers masculine. Honestly, I can’t imagine [name]Lincoln[/name] on a girl at all (it doesn’t sound cute or edgy or feminine to me in the slightest!), and [name]Lincoln[/name] has been on the rise for boys long before [name]Kristen[/name] [name]Bell[/name] used it.
Then again, since [name]Jessica[/name] [name]Simpson[/name] used [name]Maxwell[/name] for girls, I’ve started to see people say, “Oh, I could never use [name]Maxwell[/name], it’s unisex.” (For crying out loud, it’s not unisex–two celebrities named their daughters that! It’s not a trend, it’s idiocy!) I’m praying neither one of them catches on for girls. But I think you’re probably safe. It’ll take a while for [name]Lincoln[/name] to truly catch on for girls, if it ever does.
It’s definitely possible shrugs. I didn’t check-just assumed [name]Blade[/name] was right. Sorry if I was mistaken, ash.
lol, I don’t really care one way or the other, haha, but I just figured I would put it out there. I went to school in [name]Lincoln[/name], I didn’t really think it was that old of a city.
I wouldn’t name a child [name]Lincoln[/name] (boy or girl). I don’t care for the sound of it, sorry.
ETA: I’ve seen Lachlan on a girl before, and Laken, too. I like the sound of those better, but they’re pretty similar to Lincoln.
I’m not sure what kind of pull Kristen Bell’s baby name choice’ll have with the general public, but that’s the only place I’ve seen Lincoln on a girl so far.
I think [name]Blade[/name] was referring to the origins of the surname [name]Lincoln[/name]. It comes from elements meaning “lake” and “colony,” similar to other place-y surnames like [name]Paxton[/name] and [name]Ford[/name]. I don’t automatically put non-patronymic ([name]Mac[/name] or [name]Son[/name]) names into the “male” category, but the majority of them just sound better on boys to me, [name]Lincoln[/name] included. I don’t think it’ll go to the girls.
[name]Maxwell[/name] didn’t “go to the girls” just because a celebrity bestowed the name on her daughter, and it’s highly unlikely that [name]Lincoln[/name] will either. First and foremost is the association to [name]Abraham[/name] [name]Lincoln[/name]. That is always going to be there. The association is especially prominent right now with the movie that was just released. [name]Every[/name] time a celebrity gives his/her daughter a masculine name there’s this big fuss about “[name]WILL[/name] THIS NAME GO TO THE GIRLS??!!” and honestly I think it’s a bunch of rubbish. The name won’t “go to the girls” if parents just continue giving the name to their sons and get over this fear of the slim chance that their son will be perceived as feminine (gasp) because there are girls with his name.
Because I was curious…
Number of girls in 2011 named Lincoln: 24
Number of boys in 2011 named Lincoln: 2145
If I recall, you didn’t like the name of my first daughter [name]Ruby[/name] [name]June[/name] all those years ago on BZ either [name]Lucy[/name] I’m sure that’s you. Interestingly, I think you’d approve of daughter number two, [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]. Lol.
I know that names don’t “go to the girls” overnight. But, I wouldn’t want to have named a son my name (lindsey) 35 years ago, you know what I mean? But, I guess there is just no knowing what will happen.
I like it, but apparently I’m a minority in this website.
I still feel really bad about that, [name]Lindsey[/name] I honestly love the style of [name]Ruby[/name] though, and I adore [name]June[/name]. And yep, I do love [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] haha.
So yes, this is me. Nice to see you here!
[name]Just[/name] because one celebrity named her daughter [name]Lincoln[/name] doesn’t mean she’ll become the next [name]Madison[/name]. I would never name my daughter [name]Lincoln[/name], and can’t imagine loads of girls being named [name]Lincoln[/name]. Unlike [name]Madison[/name] with the ‘[name]Maddie[/name]’ nickname [name]Lincoln[/name] doesn’t have an ounce of femininity. [name]Lincoln[/name] just works for a boy and doesn’t for a girl.
No worries! I always appreciated your honesty. I hope all is well with you! I see some of your favorites have changed, but I knew it must be you when I saw [name]Edmund[/name].
I think that despite the corageous choice of [name]Lincoln[/name] [name]Bell[/name] [name]Shepard[/name] I still think of [name]Lincoln[/name] as a surnamey boys name. I’d be surprised if it “went to the girls”.
Yep! [name]Lincoln[/name] and [name]Linc[/name] both scream boy to me.
