Lionel?

Recently come across the name [name_u]Lionel[/name_u]. I’ve always liked [name_m]Leo[/name_m], but was never fond of [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] or [name_m]Leonardo[/name_m], and I think that [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] is a name that has the same ‘lion’ feeling, and I like it as much as, if not more than [name_m]Leo[/name_m]. What do you think? What are your impressions of the name [name_u]Lionel[/name_u], and what does it bring to mind?

I think [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] is adorable. It’s strong but not tough, beautiful but not soft. I think it gets overlooked a lot because of [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] [name_m]Richie[/name_m], which is a shame.

I think it’s great. Has a royal feel and feels like a very hip choice but so under the radar compared to [name_m]Leo[/name_m] names. [name_m]Just[/name_m] avoid mn [name_m]Richard[/name_m]! I love lion names. [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] is great sounding, but I will always think of [name_m]Leopold[/name_m] & Lobe. I find [name_m]Leonard[/name_m] charming in a crusty old man way. [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] is pretty great & might just top the list!

Loooove [name_u]Lionel[/name_u]! it feels very strong to me

I think it’s great too. Has a courtly medieval feel (there were various members of the British & Continental royal families called [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] throughout the Middle Ages) and of course the lion association is front and center. I’m surprised it’s not much more popular.

I really like [name_u]Lionel[/name_u]. It’s regal, rarely heard but familiar… I think it’s a winner.

[name_u]Lionel[/name_u] is excellent. It’s distinguished, regal, and approachable with a ton of personality.

I concur, I think [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] is a winner. Strong, unexpected and old fashioned. Kind of like a restrained alternative to trendier names like [name_m]Linus[/name_m], [name_m]Milo[/name_m] and [name_m]Otis[/name_m].

Thank you everyone! I’m glad to hear such positive feedback. I think this name is going onto my boys’ list - I like it a lot!

Ok, I’m going to be the bad guy and say I don’t like it much. Sorry! [name_u]Lionel[/name_u] just feels dated to me. But it does have a handsome Arthurian connection.

[name_m]How[/name_m] are you pronouncing it? I would always say LIE-null, but if you like the nn [name_m]Leo[/name_m] I’m guessing you’re saying it [name_u]LEE[/name_u]-oh-null???
