List your favorite outdated names!

It’s gotten to the point where I find charm in names such as [name_m]Norman[/name_m], [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f], and [name_m]Eugene[/name_m]. I understand that names like these are typically looked down upon, and most people you’ll encounter probably won’t want to hear how cute you think the name, say [name_f]Geraldine[/name_f] is. So, I’ve made this forum for anyone that would like to gush over their favorite outdated vintage names. Let’s show old names some love! Combos are welcomed.

I think some older names have worked their way back into use these days, but many are still seen as too dusty! It’s a shame. I love many old fashioned names (a few of which are in your signature!! [name_m]Franklin[/name_m] and [name_m]Walter[/name_m] are on our short list and I’m trying to sell my husband on [name_m]Clyde[/name_m]!)

[name_u]Claude[/name_u]
[name_m]Clarence[/name_m]
[name_u]Stanley[/name_u]
[name_m]Calvin[/name_m]
[name_m]Grover[/name_m] (curse you, Muppets…)
[name_m]Harold[/name_m]

[name_f]Ada[/name_f] (I know it fits with current, trendy [name_m]Ad[/name_m]- names, but I think [name_f]Ada[/name_f] itself is rather old-fashioned)
[name_f]Susan[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Opal[/name_f]
[name_f]Jeanette[/name_f]
[name_f]Mary[/name_f] (people go for [name_f]Marie[/name_f]…why not plain [name_f]Mary[/name_f], too?!)
[name_f]Alberta[/name_f]
[name_f]Alma[/name_f]

See I love names like [name_m]Archibald[/name_m], [name_m]Reginald[/name_m], [name_f]Veronica[/name_f], [name_f]Vivienne[/name_f] but I don’t like to call them outdated because I find them much more attractive than some of the modern names (like [name_f]Nevaeh[/name_f], come on) and I don’t think outdated is a very nice term for them. I find classic to be better.

Though there are some names that I personally can’t picture on a child because it feels old fashioned but that’s just an opinion. I personally don’t understand how people can still be calling their children [name_f]Mary[/name_f] as it’s plain to me.

Hmm
[name_f]Susan[/name_f]
[name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Nancy[/name_f]
[name_f]Margaret[/name_f]

[name_m]Norman[/name_m]
[name_m]Robert[/name_m]

I will forever love [name_f]Gertrude[/name_f], [name_f]Eglantine[/name_f], and [name_m]Cuthbert[/name_m], as outdated as they seem to be! I honestly don’t mind negative opinions on them, as we all have our own styles and I hope to treat others’ tastes with the same respect that they would have for mine.

I guess the reason why I love these names though is because to me, they conjure up such majestic images of medieval gospels and antiquated civilisations. I think I would find it very difficult to name a real child [name_f]Eglantine[/name_f] today!

Some more favourites:

(I have a soft spot for nearly any clunky feminisations of masculine names, like [name_f]Geraldine[/name_f], Léopoldine, [name_f]Ernestine[/name_f], and [name_f]Albertine[/name_f]!)
[name_f]Adelheid[/name_f]
[name_f]Millicent[/name_f]
[name_f]Prudence[/name_f]
[name_f]Ethel[/name_f]
[name_f]Mildred[/name_f]
[name_f]Clotilda[/name_f]

[name_m]Harold[/name_m]
[name_m]Llewelyn[/name_m]
[name_m]Jolyon[/name_m]
[name_m]Everard[/name_m]
[name_m]Humphrey[/name_m]
[name_m]Florentin[/name_m]

I love [name_f]Lorraine[/name_f] and [name_f]Elaine[/name_f] for girls. Also love [name_f]Louise[/name_f], but I feel like she’s starting to come back into style again. I wouldn’t use any of these, although it’s for personal reasons rather than out of fear that they’re too old fashioned! Well, maybe [name_f]Louise[/name_f]…

My style is more classic old fashioned, but I have soft spots for these names. Especially [name_u]Claude[/name_u].

[name_u]Claude[/name_u]
