Literary first + meaningful Māori middle

Hi everyone! I’m looking for advice and ideas for a young boy character (born 2016, so around 7-10 years old) in my story. I originally called him Michael, but I’m wondering if there’s a name that might fit him even better.

First name must start with one of the following letters: D, J, M, P, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, or Z.
Whilst middle name can start with any letter.

A little background:

  • His older half-sister gave him his first name. For example, she named their other sister “Sadie” after Sadie Kane from The Kane Chronicles. So ideally, his first name could also be inspired by a book character.
  • The kids are of mixed heritage, with Māori ancestry through their mother. Their grandmother gave them Māori second / middle names to honour this heritage when the boy was 7 and girl was 9. Especially something with a good meaning. For example, I’m considering “Sadie Maia” for his sister and maybe “Ariki” or “Koa” for him.
  • Physical traits: wavy blondish hair, light brown eyes, tanned skin, a little chubby.
  • Personality: Curious and thoughtful. He loves routines but gets excited about new books or hobbies. Gentle, empathetic, highly observant, sharp in areas that interest him, but sometimes struggles with social cues.

So, any suggestions for first and/or middle names would be greatly appreciated. I’m also open to middle name ideas to go with Michael if I decide to stick with that.

Thanks so much in advance!

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]! From my experience once I called my character a name I had a hard time changing it afterwards even though I might have preferred another. It’s like sometimes characters name themselves lol.

[name_m]Michael[/name_m] is a classic and beautiful name, and there are two fictional (though not really literary) characters named [name_m]Michael[/name_m] that I like

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Michael[/name_m] [name_m]Banks[/name_m][name_f][/name_f] from [name_f]Mary[/name_f] Poppins
[name_f][/name_f]– [name_f]Mikey[/name_f] (Michael)[name_f][/name_f] [name_m]Walsh[/name_m][name_f][/name_f] from the Goonies

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Or[/name_m] [name_m]Mikaere[/name_m][name_f][/name_f], the Māori variant of [name_m]Michael[/name_m].

[name_f][/name_f]

I’m not good with literary names so I don’t have too much to offer [name_f][/name_f] but I came across these

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Milo[/name_m][name_f][/name_f] (from The Phantom Tollbooth by [name_m]Norton[/name_m] Juster)
[name_f][/name_f]– [name_m]Tom[/name_m][name_f][/name_f] (after [name_m]Tom[/name_m] Sawyer)
[name_f][/name_f]– [name_m]Sawyer[/name_m][name_f][/name_f] (after [name_m]Tom[/name_m] [name_m]Sawyer[/name_m])
[name_f][/name_f]– [name_m]Xavier[/name_m][name_f][/name_f] [name_f]Bird[/name_f] (Three [name_f]Day[/name_f] Road by [name_m]Joseph[/name_m] Boyden although I’m not sure if that really fits)
[name_f][/name_f]– [name_m]Taliesin[/name_m][name_f][/name_f]. A meaningful Welsh poet born in the 6th century.

[name_f][/name_f]

I adore the name [name_m]Koa[/name_m][name_f][/name_f]! Another one I really like is [name_f]Manaia[/name_f][name_f][/name_f], a mythological creature in Māori culture.

I know this isn’t much but maybe it helped just a bit :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I think I’ve decided to stick with [name_m]Michael[/name_m] [name_f][/name_f]- I think having an existing Māori version of the name works well!
