I created this thread so we could all share our favorite names from literature. If you’ve read a book with really well named characters or have your own list of favorite names from past books you’ve read, share them with us. Also, if you really enjoyed a particular book you can add the title & author.
I may be back to write more… off the top of my head, this is what I come up with:
From [name]Jane[/name] Eyre - [name]Adele[/name]
From [name]Romeo[/name] & [name]Juliet[/name] - [name]Juliet[/name]
From Much [name]Ado[/name] About Nothing - [name]Beatrice[/name]
From Their Eyes Were Watching God - [name]Janie[/name]
From The [name]Red[/name] Tent - [name]Rachel[/name]
I also love the idea of naming a daughter [name]Tennyson[/name] or [name]Emerson[/name] after the poets, but I would probably never actually do it.
Great names. Here are some names from the book I’m reading now, [name]Love[/name] Medicine by [name]Louise[/name] Erdrich. [name]Love[/name] the name [name]Louise[/name] btw.
What about the names of the Large Family from the children’s book A [name]Little[/name] [name]Princess[/name]? At least, their imagined names, I can’t remember what their real names were.
One of my favorites is Pride & Prejudice: [name]Jane[/name], [name]Elizabeth[/name], [name]Mary[/name], [name]Katherine[/name] ([name]Kitty[/name]), and [name]Lydia[/name] [name]Bennet[/name]. And of course [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]Lucas[/name] and [name]Georgiana[/name] and [name]Fitzwilliam[/name] [name]Darcy[/name]. Really, it’s just crazy how amazingly awesome these names are, lol. (Except [name]Charles[/name] and [name]Caroline[/name] Bingley. Separate, great; for siblings, too close.)
I’m fond of the Bridgerton family series by [name]Julia[/name] [name]Quinn[/name]:
[name]Anthony[/name] (m. [name]Kate[/name]: [name]Edmund[/name], [name]Miles[/name], and [name]Charlotte[/name])
[name]Benedict[/name] (m: [name]Sophia[/name]: [name]Charles[/name], [name]Alexander[/name], [name]William[/name], and [name]Violet[/name])
[name]Colin[/name] (m. [name]Penelope[/name]: [name]Agatha[/name] and [name]Thomas[/name])
[name]Daphne[/name] (m. [name]Simon[/name]: [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Belinda[/name], [name]Caroline[/name], and [name]David[/name])
[name]Eloise[/name] (m. [name]Phillip[/name]: [name]Oliver[/name], [name]Amanda[/name], [name]Penelope[/name], and [name]Georgiana[/name])
[name]Francesca[/name] (m. [name]Michael[/name])
[name]Gregory[/name] (m. [name]Lucinda[/name]: they have nine, but none are mentioned by name in the epilogue. Oh the sadness!)
[name]Hyacinth[/name] (m. [name]Gareth[/name]: [name]George[/name])
Finally, I just finished a book called “A Woman’s Place” and one of the characters had six siblings, none of whom lived past childhood, but I thought the names made a great sibset: [name]Helen[/name], [name]Blanche[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Ophelia[/name], [name]Henry[/name], [name]Theodore[/name] ([name]Teddy[/name]), and [name]William[/name].
“I also love the idea of naming a daughter [name]Tennyson[/name] or [name]Emerson[/name] after the poets, but I would probably never actually do it.[/quote]”
I knew a 2-year-old girl at a preschool whose name was ‘[name]Emersyn[/name]’, nn ‘[name]Emmy[/name]’.
Sooo cute! I love [name]Emerson[/name] as well, and it’s awfully tempting…
For a girl I like it with the ‘y’ at the end–was adorable & makes it far more feminine!
The series 'The Darling Buds of [name]May[/name]" (which is a book series as well as a tv series) has the best sibset I have [name]EVER[/name] heard [name]EVER[/name]:
[name]Mariette[/name] [name]Louise[/name] ([name]Mariette[/name] came from [name]Marie[/name] and [name]Antoinette[/name])
[name]Montgomery[/name]
[name]Primrose[/name] [name]Violet[/name] Anenome [name]Iris[/name] [name]Magnolia[/name] [name]Narcissa[/name]
[name]Zinnia[/name] [name]June[/name] [name]Florence[/name] Nightingale (twin)
[name]Petunia[/name] [name]June[/name] [name]Florence[/name] Nightingale (twin)
[name]Victoria[/name]
[name]Oscar[/name] [name]Columbus[/name] [name]Septimus[/name] Dupont
I love [name]Jane[/name] [name]Austen[/name]'s names, as well as L.M. [name]Montgomery[/name]'s. ([name]Lucy[/name] [name]Maud[/name] is gorgeous, as well.) I love [name]Emerson[/name], but my favourite guilty pleasure name of all time is [name]Bronte[/name]. [name]LOVE[/name] that name. I wish I could get away with it…
