I am writing a book and have named every character except this one! I really need your help choosing. She is five years old (born2006ish), the youngest of eight children. Her mother died giving birth to her, and her father has recently gotten remarried. She is constantly overshadowed by her nine-year-old sister who is the star of the house. She has medium length blonde hair and blue eyes, and she acts out (always finding some kind of trouble) to try to gain the attention of her father and stepmother. When she actually receives attention, however, she is sweet and clever. She is really just a little firecracker looking for attention. As she is never going to actually grow up, I thought a little-girl sounding name would suit her best, but I’m not sure. What kind of names do you think suit her? I’ve gone through [name]Tess[/name], [name]Emmy[/name], and [name]Ty[/name], but none of those seemed right. [name]Do[/name] any of you have any new ideas? Names that are sweet with a little bit of spice?
I’m curious, what are the names of the other siblings?
[name]How[/name] about:
[name]Poppy[/name]
[name]Daisy[/name]
[name]Clover[/name]
[name]Saffron[/name]
[name]Waverly[/name]
[name]Amy[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Stella[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name] “[name]Bea[/name]” or “[name]Tris[/name]”
[name]Beatrix[/name] “[name]Trixie[/name]”
[name]Tori[/name]/[name]Tory[/name]
[name]Sophia[/name]
[name]Keelin[/name]
[name]Nixie[/name]- gives me that impish vibe
[name]Lindy[/name]
[name]Lulu[/name]
Some names I associate with a little girl are:
[name]Daisy[/name]
[name]Annie[/name]
[name]Ruby[/name]
[name]Mimi[/name]
[name]Chrissy[/name]
[name]Annabelle[/name] or [name]Mirabelle[/name]
Thanks for all the replies! The names of the other daughters are: [name]Rowan[/name], [name]Gracie[/name], and [name]Sari[/name]. They are all slightly different ([name]Gracie[/name]'s real name is [name]Johannah[/name] but she goes by her middle name because she doesn’t like it) and so I wanted to follow along the same lines. However, it’s okay if it doesn’t fit because the father has to name her by himself after the mother dies because the mother always waited until she saw her babies to name them.
My favorite suggestion of y’alls was [name]Ruby[/name]. I really love that name, and I think it fits the character. My only problem is that, that would leave three of the four girls with two-syllable names ending with the “ee” sound. Is that really obvious, or am I just over-thinking? All of the sisters are very prominent in the book, especially the little one I’m trying to name.
I had originally thought about the names [name]Violet[/name] and [name]Scarlett[/name], and I think that [name]Ruby[/name] has the same vibe but sounds a little more childish, which I like. [name]Rowan[/name]'s name also starts with R, though, but [name]Rowan[/name] is the main character and tells the story through first person and so hopefully that wouldn’t be too confusing.
What do you think? Should I go for [name]Ruby[/name] even though it ends with the ee sound and starts with R? Or should I try for another name with the same style that doesn’t end with ee? And if so do you have any suggestions for such names?
Thanks so much for your help!

[name]Tatum[/name]
[name]Maisie[/name]/ [name]Maisy[/name]
[name]Lark[/name]/ Larken
[name]Makenna[/name]
[name]Scout[/name]
Shuyler/ [name]Skylar[/name]
[name]Mila[/name]"[name]Millie[/name]"
[name]Stella[/name]
[name]Ellery[/name]
[name]Isla[/name]
[name]Lila[/name]
[name]Lily[/name]
[name]Eva[/name] “[name]Evie[/name]”
[name]Hadley[/name]
[name]Annika[/name]
[name]January[/name] “Janny”

[name]Sailor[/name]
[name]Bellamy[/name]
[name]Ivy[/name]
[name]Calliope[/name] “[name]Callie[/name]”
[name]Claudia[/name] (comes to mind for the little girl in An Interview with a Vampire)
[name]Wendy[/name] (from peter pan-- they want to stay children forever!)
she also reminds me of sort of a spunkier cinderella ( Cinder maybe) in reference to [name]Cinderella[/name] (parents died, bullied by siblings) and also in reference to the “fire cracker”
[name]Effie[/name] “Fair flame”
[name]Julia[/name] (Latin) means “[name]Forever[/name] young”
[name]Allegra[/name] (Italian) means “Snappy and bright”
Nasrin (Hindi) means “[name]Wild[/name] rose”
What was the mother’s name? And what was the father’s response to the mother’s death as related to the child? (does he blame the child in any way? does he see her as a reincarnation of the mother? does he not connect her to the death at all?) Is he a religious man? What is his profession and how does he treat the girls?
It’s my feeling that a grieving man would name a girl something simple. [name]Annie[/name]? [name]Lily[/name]?
If you want something with meaning what about [name]Naomi[/name] (nn [name]Mimi[/name])? means pleasant but is associated with death in the Bible.
I love [name]Poppy[/name] too!
Would her name have any connection to her mother’s name or special significance since her mother died giving birth to her?
I think [name]Ruby[/name] is fine. The “ee” on the end of the character’s name gives her an extra-youthful sound, so [name]Gracie[/name] sounds to me as if she might also be a little young in some ways. [name]Ruby[/name] to me sounds like a little spitfire, so I think you’ve found something that fits your description.
