Little sister for Eliza Violet?

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!
I’m due with our second daughter in [name_u]July[/name_u] and just beginning to think about names. [name_f]My[/name_f] first daughter is [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] and I want to come up with a name combo that I love and has as much meaning to me as [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]’s name does. I think I’d describe my style as “underused traditional names that lean spunky.”

In choosing [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], we loved the fun, spirited feeling of the name and also that it has a connection to Pride & Prejudice/Elizabeth [name_u]Bennett[/name_u], my favorite book and literary heroine. The rationale behind [name_f]Violet[/name_f] was two-fold. [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] has my husbands’ last name (I don’t), so I wanted her to have flower middle name like I do (mine is [name_f]Rose[/name_f]), and the name also honors my grandparents [name_f]Viola[/name_f] and [name_m]Victor[/name_m].

For this baby, we have names we like, but nothing we LOVE yet.

Top Contender First Names

  • [name_f]Maren[/name_f] (MAIR-in): I like the clean, modern sound and how it pairs with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] background is Swedish so I also like the Nordic connection. Lastly, my husband’s grandmother is [name_f]Martha[/name_f], and the only grandparent not yet honored by anyone.
  • [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]: I find this so spunky and cute and I love it paired with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] (maybe the matching of two uncommon letters – Y & Z?). I like that it’s uncommon where we live, yet totally recognizable. I don’t love the [name_u]French[/name_u] roots, as it doesn’t reflect our family.
  • [name_f]Margot[/name_f]: I also find this name spunky and fun, and similar rationale to [name_f]Maren[/name_f] that it would honor grandma. I don’t love the inevitable nickname Marg though.
  • [name_f]Anika[/name_f]: [name_f]My[/name_f] husband loves this, I’m lukewarm on it. I like the Nordic connection and that it’s relatively uncommon. I do worry that [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] & [name_f]Anika[/name_f] is too close to [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] & [name_f]Ana[/name_f]…?
  • [name_f]Nora[/name_f]: No real meaning or connections here, just have always thought it’s a beautiful name.
  • [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] ([name_u]Charlie[/name_u]): Like many of the others, I think [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] is really cute and fun. Only issue here is that [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is very common where we live – I can think of 3 Charlottes we know under age 3.
  • [name_f]Tess[/name_f]/a: I really like [name_f]Tess[/name_f], but it’s terrible with my husband’s last name which is 2 syllables and starts with S (not great with my last name either). [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] sounds better, but I don’t like it nearly as much as [name_f]Tess[/name_f]. Like the others, I think [name_f]Tess[/name_f] is spirited and fun, a great match with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], and I also like the literary connection between [name_f]Tess[/name_f] (D’Urbervilles) and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f].

Other First Names I Like:
[name_f]Alice[/name_f]
[name_f]Annie[/name_f]
[name_f]Audrey[/name_f]
[name_f]Brynn[/name_f]
[name_f]Claire[/name_f]
[name_f]Clea[/name_f]
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Georgia[/name_f] ([name_u]Georgie[/name_u])
[name_f]Isabel[/name_f] ([name_u]Izzy[/name_u]) – i know it’s a derivation of [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], as is [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]…
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] ([name_f]Lu[/name_f])
[name_f]Mira[/name_f]

Middle names – would love options!

  • M names that could honor [name_f]Martha[/name_f]
  • It would be nice to keep a flower connection with both girls, but I worry it’s a bit cheesy? Would it be better to broaden to nature names? I had also thought about [name_f]Jacinda[/name_f] (hyacinth in Spanish) and sort of a fun connection between a pandemic baby and the kick-ass female world leader [name_f]Jacinda[/name_f] Ardern who handled it best? Too much? Thoughts?!
  • Any names that could do both jobs? I’ve thought of [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f], [name_f]Maple[/name_f], but don’t love any of them.

Thanks for reading, this is a novel!

Nora or [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] with [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] in the middle

Hi there.

Oh, [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f] is so cute!

Here are my thoughts on your list-

Maren-I like this a lot. It’s simple & girly & a little sporty. I agree that it’s clean & fresh & fairly different. The pronunciation may be a little different than what you want. [name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe you’re just in the U.K. I’m in the U.S, & I would say ‘[name_f]Mair[/name_f]-in’ like rhyming with ‘[name_f]Air[/name_f]-in’.

Sylvie-It’s cute, but I feel like it’s unsubstantial. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s actually a full [name_u]French[/name_u] name. I prefer it as a nn for [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f].

Margot-It is pretty fun, but gosh, I hear it so often. And see it on everyone’s list on this site. It just sounds a little clunky to me too.

Anika-Would you say this ‘Ahn-ick-uh’ or ‘Ahn-eek-uh’, or other? I think that it’s beautiful as ‘Ahn-ick-uh’. Oh, it’s a little bit close to [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] & [name_f]Anna[/name_f], but no big deal.

Nora-It is smart & simple & classic & pretty. Kind of popular in my area at least, but a great name that works well w/Eliza.

Charlotte-Yeah, [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is way over done. It’s just meh to me, & I really only like [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] for a boy. Plus, it seems so awkward since [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] has a soft ‘Ch’ & [name_u]Charlie[/name_u] has a harder one, you know? I prefer the nn [name_f]Lottie[/name_f]. And that’s better w/Eliza.

Tess/a-[name_f]Tess[/name_f] is so fun. It’s perfect w/Eliza, & I love how it also has a literary connection for you. Too bad that it doesn’t work w/the last name. I’d suggest it as a nn, but obviously [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] won’t work. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_f]Esther[/name_f] nn [name_f]Tess[/name_f]?

Alice-Super pretty & smart. I’m guessing that it doesn’t work that well w/the ‘S’ last name either.

Annie-This is adorable, & perfect w/Eliza. [name_m]Just[/name_m] too nick-namey on its own. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you like [name_u]Anne[/name_u], [name_f]Annika[/name_f], [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f], [name_f]Annabella[/name_f], [name_f]Annelise[/name_f] or [name_f]Susanna[/name_f]? I like [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] best.

Audrey-I like this a lot. It’s sweet & gentle, but has that glamour feel as well. Maybe a little bit popular, but not too bad.

Brynn-Meh, this one doesn’t do much for me. Kind of too modern & not that exciting.

Claire-This is nice, but I think that I prefer [name_f]Clara[/name_f]. Feels more vintage.

Clea-Hm. This seems sort of nick-namey. I love [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Cleo[/name_f]. Maybe [name_f]Clementine[/name_f] nn [name_f]Clea[/name_f] could work too.

Freya-Very pretty. Simple, smart, feminine but not frilly, a lot bit exotic, fairly simple & fairly unique.

Georgia-[name_u]Georgie[/name_u] is one of those few names that I like for a boy or a girl. [name_f]Georgia[/name_f] nn [name_u]Georgie[/name_u] would be darling & fairly interesting. I also like [name_f]Georgina[/name_f] & [name_f]Georgiana[/name_f].

Isabel-Yeah, I think it’s a little close to [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]. Really cute though.

Lucia-That’s pretty, but the fact that it has three pronunciations is bound to get annoying. What about [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]?

Mira-I like it a lot. [name_m]Even[/name_m] more as a nn though. [name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Miriam[/name_f] nn [name_f]Mira[/name_f] w/Eliza.

Hope this helps.

Your older daughter’s name is gorgeous! And I love your list.

Maren–I really like this! It has a sophisticated-but-approachable feel, and I like the way it sounds with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]! I also love the idea of using it as an honor name.
Sylvie–Ooh, I love [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], and I agree with you that it sounds great with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]. It definitely hits that sweet spot of familiar but distinctive. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to meet a little [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] with no [name_u]French[/name_u] roots.
Margot–I adore [name_f]Margot[/name_f] with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]. I love that they’re both originally diminutives of longer classics, and I think they totally share the same spunky energy. I honestly don’t see a [name_f]Margot[/name_f] getting called Marg–maybe because I pronounce it more like MAR-goh than MARG-oh? Anyway, I think that would be easily avoidable. And I love this as another honor name option!
Anika–I really like [name_f]Anika[/name_f], and I do think it sounds nice with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]. I’m not sure about the [name_f]Elsa[/name_f] and [name_f]Anna[/name_f] thing; I can’t decide whether I would’ve noticed it right away if you hadn’t mentioned it. I’d say not a dealbreaker, but it’s not my favorite from your list with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] anyway.
Nora–This is lovely and has a great meaning! I’m not sure it has quite the same spunkiness that I see in [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], but I do really like it.
Charlotte/Charlie–[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is beautiful and elegant, and I do love that it has such a fun nickname built in (I love [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] too!). But I do know a lot of Charlottes. I don’t think the popularity should be a dealbreaker if it’s your favorite, but it might be something to consider if it will bother you.
Tess/Tessa–Ooh, this is a tough one. I completely agree with you that [name_f]Tess[/name_f] would be a great match for [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] style-wise, and as much as I like [name_f]Tessa[/name_f], I don’t think it fits quite as well. I wonder if maybe [name_f]Tess[/name_f] would work as a middle? [name_u]Or[/name_u] you could go with [name_f]Tessa[/name_f] for the flow and call her [name_f]Tess[/name_f], but that does seem like an imperfect solution.

I really like most of the rest of your list–my favorites from the rest are [name_f]Alice[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Georgia[/name_f], and [name_f]Lucia[/name_f].

Overall, my very favorite with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] is [name_f]Margot[/name_f]; runners up would be [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_f]Georgia[/name_f]. One other suggestion–[name_f]Frances[/name_f] nn. [name_u]Frankie[/name_u]? I feel like [name_f]Frances[/name_f] has all the classic charm of [name_f]Eliza[/name_f], and [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] has all the fun spunky energy!

I actually think [name_f]Jacinda[/name_f] makes a pretty awesome middle, and I love that it would still have that subtle flower name time. I really love all of the “M” flower names you mentioned, too, but it sounds like you’re not quite sold on any of them? I’m not sure I have any more “M” flower names off the top of my head, but I do think either [name_f]Maren[/name_f] or [name_f]Margot[/name_f] would make a great honor middle if you don’t decide to go for one of them as a first. Good luck!!

I like [name_f]Maren[/name_f] for you! It seems to have the most significance and it seems like the one you like best based on your descriptions! I think [name_f]Maren[/name_f] and [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] sound really good together. I like the flower middle because it will connect all three of you

You have some gorgeous names and the sentiments are beautiful! I love the idea of using a [name_f]Mar[/name_f] name to honour [name_f]Martha[/name_f], and the significance of using a flower name to tie together not only you, but [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]

Would [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] nicknamed [name_f]Tess[/name_f] work with your last name ? I adore [name_f]Tess[/name_f] with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]! [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] [name_f]Marta[/name_f] , [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f]

I also love [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and I feel like it fits the vintage feel [name_f]Eliza[/name_f] carries. I actually don’t think Marg would be a nickname that catches. I know 2 [name_f]Margot[/name_f]’s and they had nicknames Go Go ( affectionately from an older sibling who could not pronounce the name originally and it stuck) and the other got [name_f]Maggie[/name_f]. I really like [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and [name_f]Maren[/name_f] to honour [name_f]Martha[/name_f]

Would [name_f]Marjorie[/name_f] fit a flower/ honour name? Vintage underused , [name_f]Mar[/name_f] name that honours [name_f]Martha[/name_f] and [name_f]Marjoram[/name_f] sort of fits the flower/ herb

I LOVE [name_f]Jacinda[/name_f]/ [name_f]Jacinta[/name_f] and think that for every reason you listed it is a rockstar honour name that deserves some use !

Eliza Violet is lovely! I absolutely adore both Margot and Freya so these get my vote. They’re both full of spunk and have a similar vibe to Eliza and, in the case of the former, have some meaning for you. Although Freya’s Nordic connection would be a positive for you, wouldn’t it? EDIT: Freya means ‘lady’, as does Martha - a perfect way to honour your partner’s grandmother!

My other favourites are Anika and Sylvie. Both fit in with your description of your style and both are wonderful with Eliza. I’m not reminded of Ana and Elsa when I see these two names together.

I also adore Sylvie’s meaning - ‘of the forest’/‘spirit of the woods’. It feels so magical to me. In fact, this and Maeve have my two favourite meanings (Maeve was, in Irish mythology, queen of the fairies). In fact, Maeve would go beautifully with Eliza too…

Middle ideas:

Margot Jacinda (I quite like this idea)
Margot Iris (I don’t think going for another flower is cheesy)
Margot Mabel
Margot Primrose (a nice connection to you?)
Margot Rosalind (ditto)
Margot Dahlia
Margot Clover
Margot Aster

Freya Jessamine
Freya Sage
Freya Primrose (okay, so I’m running with this now)
Freya Rosalind
Freya Marguerite
Freya Lily
Freya Poppy
Freya Daisy

Anika Poesy
Anika Primrose
Anika Rosalind
Anika Sage
Anika Ivy
Anika Blossom
Anika Fleur
Anika Jasmine

Sylvie Jacinda
Sylvie Primrose
Sylvie Rosalind
Sylvie Iris
Sylvie Astrid
Sylvie Madeleif
Sylvie Paloma
Sylvie Linnea

My favourites for you are bolded. Turns out I’m more into Anika than I realised!

EDIT: Oh, and I also love Isabel (and Audrey) and personally think it works with Eliza, despite the fact they’re both derivations of Elizabeth. Isabel Poesy or Isabel Freya would be lovely.

I absolutely love the idea of [name_f]Martha[/name_f] with sister [name_f]Eliza[/name_f].
Have you considered maybe [name_f]Clara[/name_f] which I think is beautiful? For instance [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Maren[/name_f] or [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] would be lovely :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
How do you feel about [name_f]Marsali[/name_f]? Which I think could honour [name_f]Martha[/name_f] and has the same appeal as [name_f]Eliza[/name_f].
I also think either [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] or [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] are very pretty with her sisters name.
[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] [name_f]Maren[/name_f]/Marigold
[name_f]Lucille[/name_f] [name_f]Maren[/name_f]/Marigold could work too.
I will suggest these names which to me give me the same vibe as [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]…
[name_f]Cecily[/name_f]
[name_f]Rosalie[/name_f]
[name_f]Jemima[/name_f]

Sylvie, [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and [name_f]Maren[/name_f] are beautiful with [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]! I also don’t think Marg is an inevitable nickname to [name_f]Margot[/name_f].

Maren [name_f]Sylvia[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Margot[/name_f] and [name_f]Margot[/name_f] [name_f]Florence[/name_f] came to mind

Love [name_f]Maren[/name_f], [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f], and [name_f]Nora[/name_f]! I love [name_f]Tess[/name_f]/a too, but if you don’t think it sounds good then maybe avoid it or bout it in the middle. Maybe [name_f]Maren[/name_f] [name_f]Tess[/name_f], or [name_f]Nora[/name_f] [name_f]Tess[/name_f]? Those sound great in my opinion. [name_f]Jacinda[/name_f] as a middle is actually a very nice connection as well, maybe [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] [name_f]Jacinda[/name_f]?
