Thanks for all the feedback so far. It’s helpful to hear what other people think of our list.
@ findemaxa13 - Yeah [name_u]Corey[/name_u] Absolutely 100% wants to use Ender. It’s his #1. I told him ages ago I was ok with using it but after considering it when we were expecting Azula it has lost some of its lustre for me. I still like it. I much prefer it as [name_m]Evander[/name_m] nn Ender because I think it sounds more complete & like it wouldn’t surprise someone to see it on a resume or something because it looks more like a ‘real’ name. Also [name_m]Evander[/name_m] is just a skip and a jump from [name_m]John[/name_m], so it is a nod to my dad in that way. I like honour names that are just not quite whatever the original was. We have so far used [name_f]Rosemary[/name_f] for my mom & Aunt, [name_f]Mary[/name_f] & [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and we used [name_f]Coral[/name_f] for my grandmother [name_f]Catherina[/name_f] [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] and great grandfather [name_m]Cornelis[/name_m] and my husband [name_u]Corey[/name_u]. So [name_m]Rudyard[/name_m] would be for my grandfather ([name_m]Rudolf[/name_m]) and [name_m]Erickson[/name_m] for [name_u]Corey[/name_u]'s grandfather ([name_m]Erick[/name_m]).
We have a small list of names that work for honour names, and we like the idea of keeping to a nature theme in some way as well like we have done with our girls middles so far. I prefer 1 middle for girls and 2 middles for boys (because that seems to be the only way for them to have honour & nature names both as well as an interesting, dork-magical firstname that we love). It is tricky to find names that pull ‘double duty’ in that way but we have found a few: we could use [name_f]Jade[/name_f] for family members [name_m]John[/name_m] or [name_f]Jane[/name_f] or [name_f]Judy[/name_f] or [name_m]Jason[/name_m] (or [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] for [name_f]Judy[/name_f] or [name_f]Jasmine[/name_f] or [name_m]Jasper[/name_m] for [name_m]Jason[/name_m]), or [name_u]Mica[/name_u] for [name_f]Michelle[/name_f] or [name_u]Michael[/name_u], [name_f]Luna[/name_f] or [name_u]Linden[/name_u] for myself (my middle is [name_f]Linda[/name_f]/[name_u]Lynn[/name_u]), and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] for [name_u]Rudy[/name_u] if we don’t go with [name_m]Rudyard[/name_m]. I’m having a hard time finding more, and would rather not repeat honour names (like I wouldn’t want to use [name_m]Rudyard[/name_m] and [name_u]Ruby[/name_u] because they would honour the same person).
A full list of family/friends we would consider naming after (if we can tweak it and we like it and it works with whatever fn we choose) would be [name_m]John[/name_m], [name_u]Rudy[/name_u], [name_f]Judy[/name_f], [name_f]Michelle[/name_f], [name_u]Michael[/name_u], [name_m]Erick[/name_m], [name_f]Gwen[/name_f], [name_m]Jason[/name_m], [name_f]Krystina[/name_f], [name_f]Kelsi[/name_f], [name_m]Charles[/name_m], [name_f]Stella[/name_f]/[name_f]Stefania[/name_f], [name_f]Malia[/name_f], [name_m]Martin[/name_m], [name_f]Tiffany[/name_f] if you have ideas of any honour names for those.
I love travel so globetrotting styles/origins appeal to me (and [name_f]Canada[/name_f] is so multicultural nobody cares if you ‘steal’ names from other cultures).
Its a challenge because we are also very picky about what names we like, so not everything that technically ‘works’ appeals to us. We are of course totally willing to drop the ‘theme’ altogether for the right combo.
@gr19 - I know [name_f]Athena[/name_f] is becoming more common in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_u]America[/name_u] so its not as exciting the last few years but we both still REALLY like it. Coolest namesake ever. We have a few interesting connections to the name.
Freyja is more exotic to me (I know no Freyjas and I know a handful of Athenas) and is also a very cool namesake. I don’t feel as attached to the name emotionally as I am to [name_f]Athena[/name_f] but I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the sound of it & it feels fresher to me. I also like that it has more of a differentiated sound from Azula.
I love the idea of the girls names feeling soft/smart/spunky/strong & have mythological histories /character connections with qualities that we would be proud of in our daughters (Yes, guys, I would be proud to have a daughter as strong and clever and driven and persistent and talented and individual as Azula from ATLA).
@southern.maple - Globetrotting Nature loving Mythology Nerds might be close. Thanks for the input!
@ sunniva - Yeah I like Freyja spelled either way. The J makes it a touch more magical, but might be a pain with our tricky last name so I’m not sure what we will end up going with when it comes down to it. Right now, I like the J. YES I love [name_f]Jade[/name_f] for a boy. I like it for a girl as well but for a boy it’s just so roguishly handsome, whereas for a girl it feels a bit dusty. I wish [name_u]Corey[/name_u] liked it for a little man. I think I could weasel it in with a FN he really really loves (like Ender or Odin or Oberon) but I’m not 100% sure. Thanks for the compliments. If you read my response to @findemaxa13 I have listed possible other middles we might go for… we can break our Geeky Name - [name_f]Honour[/name_f] Name - Nature Name pattern with [name_m]Evander[/name_m] because it as a FN pulls double-duty already & frees up one of our MN spots for something more interesting.
@youssarian - LOL thanks for the compliments & for your input. Its so encouraging to hear when other people like our style/list and have input or suggestions on what names we might use.
So helpful so far! More feedback would be very much appreciated.
