We adore boys names for girls and I’ve never heard [name_m]Lewellyn[/name_m] used for a girl but I feel like it has a flowly feel that would be suitable. Nickname [name_u]Lou[/name_u]. Thoughts?
While it’s not my style, I think [name_m]Lewellyn[/name_m] is definitely usable for a girl. [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] is a very feminine name, and because its sound is in there, [name_m]Lewellyn[/name_m] could definitely be perceived as such. It reminds me of a mashup of [name_f]Lucille[/name_f] and [name_f]Ellen[/name_f].
I think [name_m]Llewellyn[/name_m] could be used on a girl. I believe it was one of my friend’s middle names actually
EDIT: bobcat108’a suggestion of Louellen/Luellen might have actually been the middle name
I think it works! I’ve always enjoyed this name phonetically and visually.
As someone w/Welsh ancestry, I’m not in favor of it being used on a girl…it’s the name of two of the greatest leaders in medieval [name_m]Wales[/name_m]. If you really like the sound of the full name & the nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u], Louellen has both of those.
Not a fan at all. But [name_f]Luella[/name_f] is super cute and spunky
I consider [name_m]Llewellyn[/name_m] masculine, so I would not use it. However, I love the name or nickname [name_u]Lou[/name_u] on a girl! One I’m personally considering!
I’m not a fan, it’s a very traditional Welsh boys name. [name_f]Luella[/name_f] is a similar name, and I second the suggestion of Louellen.
I’ve seen it used before. Some people are very traditionalist about the gendering of names but honestly the only thing that determines that is people’s usage of it. You can definitely use it. And I don’t think it would be disrespectful to the Welsh, at least I’ve never encountered someone who is Welsh (and I mean Welsh Welsh, not Welsh ancestry) who took offense. Especially being it is also a surname.
Yes, we prefer traditionally masculine names for girls. I suppose since my name is a traditionally masculine name, [name_m]Harvey[/name_m]. And knowing that the name [name_m]Llewellyn[/name_m] evokes the memory of strong leadership makes me think it’s a perfect girl’s name!
It’s not the fact that it is a boys name that I dislike, I just don’t think it’s pretty or that the spelling looks nice
I think it works.
It’s one of my favourite names for boys, and I don’t think it is suitable for a girl at all. The reason for this is that the Welsh language was suppressed for centuries - look up the Welsh Not, for instance - and for that reason I believe we owe it the respect of only using its names in the way they evolved to be used, including for the traditional gender. I understand that you mean no disrespect of course, but I recommend you think seriously about it.
Louellen is a great alternative! Lewynn would be another option, derived from the Old English Leofwynn, “dear joy”.
I will admit i had no idea how to pronounce it, i look it online and i find it quite pretty for a girl. I absolutely adore [name_u]Lou[/name_u].
I know a woman by this name and she wears it well. Totally useable for a girl. A lot of people would probably assume it’s spelled [name_u]Lou[/name_u]-[name_f]Ellen[/name_f] of similar, but I don’t think that’s an issue. Once people are familiar with a name they will spell it correctly.
I love the name and don’t know the history but a great name to write. Beautiful. Our friends have it as their last name. If you love it, go for it.
