My husband and I are non-Irish living in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f]. We love the name [name_m]Lochlainn[/name_m] for a girl. Traditionally this is a name for a boy in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], however we feel it works for a girl as well. But being non-irish, we were wondering if there are any Irish , Welsh or Scottish people or with tight bands to [name_f]Ireland[/name_f] here who have an opinion about this? Would the girl be looked at or bullied with having a boy name, or is it acceptable and maybe even cool?
If it is strictly a boy name where you live, I might be a bit concerned. She may or may not be bully, she may or may not be “cool” because of her “boy” name… you just never know. If it would be equivalent of naming a girl “[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m]” here in the US, then I think you should stay away from it. If it is more like naming a girl “[name_u]Sawyer[/name_u]”, which has more boys than girls in the US, then it would definitely be okay.
If you love it a lot, it could always be a cool middle!
Other suggestions that sound/feel similar:
[name_u]Larkin[/name_u]
[name_u]Laney[/name_u]
[name_u]Dylan[/name_u]
[name_u]Lennox[/name_u]
I have to say, as a [name_m]Scot[/name_m], that the name is completely masculine, and since there is nothing even feminine sounding about it, it would be pretty ridiculous on a girl
If you were living in the US I would totally say go for it- I think it actually sounds and looks better as a girl’s name than as a boy’s name! But since you’re actually in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f], it’s probably not a good idea.
@misslis, in the US it’s pronounced LAWK-lynn or LAHK-lynn
