Hey!
I love the sound of [name]Lola[/name]-but was put off due to the Spanish meaning-‘lady of sorrows’-or some sites have ‘lady in pain’. (Yuck)! Anyway I have just found out by a friend (and have now looked it up) it is a nickname for an [name]Indian[/name] [name]Goddess[/name] [name]Lakshmi[/name]. (She is the [name]Goddess[/name] of wealth-both spiritual and material among other things).
Suddenly I love the name again…Had anyone else heard that reference? Or do you think of the tranny in the song [name]Lola[/name]-or the negative meaning?
[name]Baby[/name] gal due in [name]December[/name]-this naming game is hard!
“whatever [name]Lola[/name] wants, [name]Lola[/name] gets…”. [name]Lola[/name] definetly has a star baby chic vibe going for it. But, I was unaware of its negative meaning. What about [name]Layla[/name] or [name]Lila[/name]?
I dislike [name]Lola[/name]. It’s too [name]Lolita[/name] for me. However, I also was unaware with its meaning, nor ever thought it can be a nn for [name]Lakshmi[/name]. [name]Love[/name] [name]Lila[/name] instead.
Not as a given name. I just think of [name]Lolita[/name]
[name]Lola[/name] doesn’t me sorrow, [name]Dolores[/name] does. [name]Lola[/name] is just the most common nn for [name]Dolores[/name] but it can be a nn for any “lo” name
[name]Eloise[/name]
[name]Loren[/name]/[name]Lauren[/name]
[name]Elodie[/name]
[name]Clover[/name]
[name]Louisa[/name]
I like [name]Lola[/name]. Never looked into the meaning of it before.
According to wiki:
“[name]Lola[/name] may also be used as a short form of the unrelated [name]German[/name] name [name]Aloisia[/name] (famous warrior). The name [name]Lola[/name] is also common in [name]Africa[/name], in Nigeria, the Yoruba tribe has many feminine names that are shortened to [name]Lola[/name], such as Temilola which means ‘Wealth is mine’, Olufunmilola which means ‘God has given me wealth’, Damilola which means ‘[name]Prosper[/name] me’.” And, “the name originated with a title for the Blessed Virgin [name]Mary[/name], mother of [name]Jesus[/name] [name]Christ[/name].”
It’s a name that’s short for lots of other names and through the years has been popular enough to have many good and bad connotations to it. If it’s something that you really like, there’s enough “good” that goes along with it to justify using it in spite of any negatives, imo.
I think of the [name]German[/name] movie Run [name]Lola[/name] Run, and also the [name]German[/name] equivalent of [name]Oscar[/name] is called [name]Lola[/name]. I really like the name and agree it has so may meanings and connotations that meaning alone shouldn’t get you down. And yes, the religious use of that meaning is more positive that it initially seems. [name]Dolores[/name] means literally sorrows, from the expression Our Lady of Sorrows, which is meant to convey that [name]Mary[/name] feels the world’s sorrows for it and comforts the world for its sorrows. Honoring that to me is lovely. It is however very religious specific and it’s still not exactly a meaning like “happiness” or something. But I also think of [name]Lola[/name] as a nickname for [name]Charlotte[/name] or even [name]Eloise[/name] or [name]Louise[/name] as much as [name]Dolores[/name]. I think it’s a great name and I’d love to meet a little [name]Lola[/name]. But if you’re put off, another name that feels similar to me besides other double-L names is [name]Nina[/name].
I think of the transvestite in the song. I can’t get past it personally. The meaning itself wouldn’t bother me,I like [name]Persephone[/name] which doesn’t have the most upbeat meaning either.
I named my daughter [name]Lola[/name]-[name]May[/name] … [name]Every[/name] now and then we get the song reference but for the most part people actually stop and comment on what a lovely name it is it really suits her she’s a spunky little ice blonde blue eyed girl…
My hubby actually picked it as I wanted [name]Eden[/name] but I’m soooo glad he chose it as I really love it! I would love to name our next baby [name]Roxy[/name] if it’s a girl but even I realize the showgirl theme is just too much haha!
I say go for it!!! There will always be some “bad” association for someone somehow with a name… It’s what you associate with that matters
If you end up deciding you are uncomfortable with [name]Lola[/name] as the given name, you might consider it as a nn for something like [name]Lorelei[/name] or [name]Laurel[/name].
I love your daughters name! Such a sweet and unique double barrel. Also reminds me of [name]Lula[/name]-[name]Mae[/name] a la Breakfast at Tiffanys.
[name]Lola[/name]…the meaning doesnt turn me off at all and while my first association is the Kinks song, that doesn’t bother me either, cant really say why, I just still think it’s a beautiful name.
I actually like [name]Lola[/name] very much. My cousin named her daughter that and calls her Lolie as a nickname.
[name]Dolores[/name] means Our Lady of Sorrows but it’s not a yucky meaning. It doesn’t mean that the child will be a lady of sorrow it is rather referencing [name]Mary[/name]'s sorrows at the foot of her son’s cross.
I think [name]Lola[/name] is a darling nickname but wouldn’t use it as a stand alone name.
Thanks guys! you have been most helpful.
