What do you think of the twinset [name]Ronan[/name] and [name]Petra[/name]? Obviously we’re not into too matchy-matchy sound-wise, but I’m hoping stylistically they at least complement each other. Also curious if people like these names separately generally as well.
I love [name]Ronan[/name]! It is unique and handsome, strong yet still spunky. The name has vintage flair and modern appeal, which makes it perfect for today! I think [name]Ronan[/name] has a soft sound complimented by a rugged, handsome feel. This Irish name is a winner!
[name]Petra[/name], on the other hand, isn’t my favorite. It reminds me of [name]Peter[/name] - as it is a feminine form - which also means “rock,” and its Greek origin doesn’t seem to compliment the overtly Irish [name]Ronan[/name]. The name doesn’t have a particularly soft sound to me, either. Sorry!
I love [name]Ronan[/name] and [name]Petra[/name]. In [name]Sweden[/name], where I live, [name]Petra[/name] is quite common. It is a strong beautiful name. [name]Ronan[/name] is seldom heard here, but I like the vowel-sound of it.
I do agree with lemon though that they are pretty different from one another-- they come from totally different eras and totally different countries. This normally wouldn’t bug me except that both names are so distinctly connected to their roots.
[name]Ronan[/name] is so very Celtic and soft, and even though I knew a very sweet [name]Petra[/name] in HS, the Greek name still strikes me as stoic, strong and definitely more abrupt (mostly because the aspirated p and t consonants. [name]Ronan[/name] doesn’t have any aspirated consonants at all). I would personally go with a softer girl’s name such as [name]Paloma[/name] or [name]Pomona[/name].
That being said, I actually think they work as a twinset and if you love them, you should use them!
Thank you for the feedback, all! [name]Happy[/name] to hear many think the combo works, and I appreciate the honest feedback too from those for whom it doesn”t quite work. Some info/thoughts:
[name]Lemon[/name]: I can see how the two different origins could be unappealing to some. We looked high and low for a Welsh/Scottish/Irish first name, but haven”t found anything that we totally love that works with our last name. I actually like the Irish and Greek names because I”ve studied both languages and love Greek in particular, so there”s appeal there for me personally.
[name]Lemon[/name] and dove14: I agree with you both about [name]Petra[/name] not having soft sounds, and that, along with the meaning ”rock,” is part of the appeal for us. These babies will be premature due to pregnancy complications, and they will need to be strong to meet the challenges of their prematurity. So the name is apt in these circumstances. (Our son”s mn will have a meaning that also connotes strength.) [name]Dove[/name], I do like both your alternate suggestions. For what it”s worth, if do we go with [name]Petra[/name], the middle will be considerably softer.
Spotlightstarlit: We”ve got our son”s and are still working on our daughter”s. I might post looking for more advice soon.
I love them! I think that they work wonderfully together. While they are of different origins, they’re in the same sort of style-- obscure, unusual, but legitimate names. They’re both two syllables, but have very different sounds.
I love the reasoning behind your name choices! What a beautiful gift to give to your precious children!
My best friend’s little boy was born at 28 weeks, 1 pound 14 ounces, and has been in the NICU for months. He’s now almost 7 pounds though! It’s amazing what we can do with modern medicine!
Anyway, I have some idea of what you are-- or will be-- going through!
Hugs and prayers to your family!
I think these 2 names go wonderfully together. My daughter’s name is [name]Petra[/name] (and btw we went with a longer and more “frilly” mn) so I’m biased! But I think it goes wonderfully with [name]Ronan[/name] – and I esp. love your reasoning about how they will need strength in the months to come. Best of luck
I really, really love [name]Ronan[/name] and [name]Petra[/name] together! Wow! (I’m pronouncing [name]Petra[/name] as “PAY-tra,” which I’m hoping is correct…)
What I love about the combo, is that both names have so much character, and seeing them paired together seems so unexpetedly brilliant!
[name]Love[/name] them both!
I think they sound great together and would make a great twinset. [name]Both[/name] beautiful and strong names with lots of personality
