Looking for more Irish names :)

I am looking for more Irish names to add to my list.

I know of most standard and top 100 Irish names and anglicizations, also of most Irish words that have been turned into names, e.g.: Siobhán, Sinéad, Aisling, Niamh, Aoife, Ailbhe, Aoibhe, Aoibh, Aoibheann, Aoibhinn, Aoibhín, Saoirse, Sorcha, Síofra, Clíodhna, Clodagh, Nuala, Fionnuala, Caoimhe, Colleen, Erin, Eireann, Maeve, Meadhbh, Ailís, Eabha and some more modern ones like Éala and Aodha etc.

I am looking for the more unusual ones :slight_smile: Names of saints, names from mythology, new names etc. Just any new ideas.

On my list so far:

Síofra
Caoilfhionn
Clíodhna
Meadhbh
Sadhbh
Aisling

So these are my favorites. Some are common, some more unusual. But as I know of most of the common ones (Top 100 and often used in the past) I think I can only find new ones by going beyond these sources.

Any ideas or hidden gems?

P.S.: How do I make the names click-able? Sometimes you can click on them and sometimes you can’t and I haven’t figured out how this is determined.

(and also [name_f]Sorcha[/name_f] but you already said her!)

Ones I can think of that I don’t see mentioned yet… sweet Áine (AWN-yuh, as in [name_f]Anya[/name_f], is how I’ve seen this pronounced), Éilis (AY-lish or EYE-lish), Mebh (Maeve), and [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f] (AY-lee)!

If they’re in the data base, they’ll be click-able, however, if they have accents, they won’t appear.

Ferelith, Líadan, Fainse, Alastriona, Muirgel, Honora, Móirín, and Kinvara came to mind

I had never heard of [name_f]Kinvara[/name_f] before. It’s cool but not really for me. Móirín looks very pretty but my guess is that it sounds like [name_f]Maureen[/name_f]? which is fine but not my favourite. I like [name_f]Gráinne[/name_f] too but not enough to use. Same with Áine.

[name_f]Cessair[/name_f] is one I never heard before, thanks! It’s cool. [name_f]Eilidh[/name_f] is a favourite of mine but I think it might be Scottish? Líadan is pretty I just didn’t like something about it (can’t remember it was either the meaning or mythology). [name_f]Brónach[/name_f] is growing on me but the meaning is a bit sad.

I really like these two anyone know if they have a longer history? Meibhin (I leave it without the fadas so it will be clickable) looks like a diminutive of Méabh? Maybe? And Saidhbhin of Sadhbh?

That’s correct. Saidhbhín appears in a place name, Cahersiveen, so I believe it’s quite old:

Meidhbhín is a diminutive of Méabh/Maeve. I believe Méibhín is a simplified spelling of that. I’ve also seen the spelling Meibhín (without the fada) so I’m not sure which one is more “correct”. Maeveen is an Anglicised spelling.

Síomha is one I like. It’s a modern form of the Old Irish Síthmaith and means “good peace”.

Others …

  • Éinín (EYE neen), means “little bird”
  • Fíonscoth (FEEN ska), rish mythology
  • Fionúir (FYUN oor)
  • Líobhan (LYEE vawn), form of the Gaelic name Lí Ban, meaning “beauty of women” (pasted from Behind the Name)
  • Máirín (MAH reen), diminutive of Mary

I can recommend this site for more Irish names – they have loads of different lists with saint’s names, modern names, place names etc.

About the clicking

The names saved in the database with fadas will be clickable with them too (E.g. [name_f]Síomha[/name_f]), but some names in the database are simply missing the fadas and therefore are only clickable when typed out without them (Although there are often two separate entries, one with and one without, e.g. [name_f]Éabha[/name_f] and [name_f]Eabha[/name_f]).

Oh namenerds.com! I was there when I was a really young teenager and still remember their old message board. Good times. I love that site and forgot about the Irish section completely.
