Lorcan, Gregor and Avis

…Thoughts? Came up with this particular combo on another thread and wondered if the names work together? Thank you to those who have already commented! xx

I do like [name]Avis[/name] but I have one reservation about the name. I don’t know where you live but in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name] there is a car rental company named [name]Avis[/name]. An alternate spelling is [name]Avice[/name]. Regards, [name]Mischa[/name].

[name]Love[/name] it! I live in [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name] and had never heard of [name]Avis[/name] the car rental company. [name]Avis[/name] is lovely, a rarer version of [name]Ava[/name].

Thanks for the feedback. Obviously, I am aware of the car rental firm but it doesn’t actually bother me because it is not a particularly negative association, and the name came before the company. I also think that this generation will not be as aware of the connection, and that thoughts of the car company will fade away after meeting a little [name]Avis[/name]. Other than that, do the three names work together? xx

[name]Hi[/name], Kath - I do like the sibset [name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Gregor[/name] and [name]Avis[/name], but have you thought of:

[name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Gregor[/name] and [name]Maeve[/name]
[name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Gregor[/name] and [name]Maude[/name]

([name]Maeve[/name] and [name]Maude[/name] remind me of [name]Avis[/name].)

[name]Hi[/name], Kyemsma

I do like both [name]Maeve[/name] and [name]Maude[/name], but I prefer [name]Avis[/name]! Great suggestions, though! [name]Do[/name] you think that [name]Gregor[/name] and [name]Avis[/name] are more familiar in feel than [name]Lorcan[/name]? [name]Just[/name] hoping the set doesn’t sound like three random names thrown together, I’m hoping for some fluidity!
Kath xx

[name]Hi[/name], Kath: I looked up [name]Avis[/name], which is Latin for bird. [name]Gregor[/name] is Greek for vigilant, and [name]Lorcan[/name] is Irish for little/fierce. I do think [name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Gregor[/name] and [name]Avis[/name] is a nice sibset, and they all tie together nicely.
Here is another suggestion: [name]Mavis[/name], which is French for songbird. [name]Avis[/name] and [name]Mavis[/name] were popular in the U.S. around 1910-1920.

[name]Hi[/name], Kyemsma! Thank you for your help. Although [name]Mavis[/name] is pretty, I prefer [name]Avis[/name] as I find it more distinctive. What would your impressions be on meeting a sibset of [name]Lorcan[/name] and [name]Gregor[/name] and [name]Avis[/name]? Kath xx

Kath,

I honestly think [name]Avis[/name] feels out of place in this set. I could see where it might pass because of the strong consonant and vowel patterns, but it feels much more light than either [name]Lorcan[/name] or [name]Gregor[/name]. I know [name]Avis[/name] is for a girl, but I really feel like [name]Clovis[/name] is the better match in this set - that’s a traditionally male name, though. [name]Do[/name] I personally think [name]Clovis[/name] could pass for a girls’ name, especially if you used nicknames like [name]Clo[/name], [name]Coco[/name], or [name]Issy[/name]? Absolutely! But I don’t know if the rest of NB agrees with me…

As for [name]Avis[/name], I do think that perhaps the French [name]Avril[/name] might be better with [name]Lorcan[/name] and [name]Gregor[/name], either pronounced as [AV-rihl] - as in [name]Avril[/name] Lavigne - or as [ahv-RILLE]. Or, go back to basics and try [name]April[/name]?

If, however, you like the dichotomy of these rich, strong, somewhat harsh names for boys and light and airy names for girls, I might suggest the overly simplistic Hebrew name for “bird,” [name]Aya[/name]. Yep, it’s like [name]Maya[/name] without the M if you’re trying to get the pronunciation right! [name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Gregor[/name], and [name]Aya[/name] is quite pretty, actually. For a similar name with more substance, try one of my absolute favorites, [name]Anya[/name], or a similar name with a bit of a punch, [name]Katya[/name]). [name]Ayla[/name] [A-la], too, is rich with simplicity and subtle elegance, and has two different but equally lovely meanings - “oak tree” or “halo.”

I really, really love the suggestion of [name]Avril[/name] (or [name]Averil[/name], which is actually the spelling I am more familiar with)

[name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Gregor[/name] [name]Avis[/name]

[name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Gregor[/name] [name]Averil[/name] …I kind of feel like [name]Averil[/name] looks better written down, but [name]Avis[/name] sounds better out loud with the set?

Kath xx

Kath,

[name]Glad[/name] you like! Well, I like [name]Lorcan[/name] and [name]Avis[/name] as a sound, but I don’t like [name]Gregor[/name] and [name]Avis[/name] really at all. I might say that [name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Avril[/name] ([name]Averil[/name] - that’s actually a totally different name, but equally perfect in the set!), and [name]Gregor[/name] sounds best to me, but [name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Gregor[/name], and [name]Avril[/name] ([name]Averil[/name]) doesn’t sound bad to me.

[name]Averil[/name] really is very pretty written out. I like it more than [name]Avril[/name], I think! [name]Ave[/name] is a cute nickname, too, or even vintage [name]Vera[/name]…

[name]Lemon[/name]

[name]Averil[/name] is very pretty, but I still like the original combo of [name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Gregor[/name] and [name]Avis[/name] best.

[name]Hi[/name] Kath,
To me, [name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Gregor[/name] and [name]Avis[/name] make an interesting sibset. I like that each name has a history all its own, and I also like that each name is not too popular. I do like [name]Lemon[/name]'s suggestion of [name]Anya[/name] or [name]Avril[/name], though! Also, how about [name]Clover[/name]?
[name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Gregor[/name] and [name]Clover[/name]! All have the “o” to tie them together.

[name]Hi[/name], [name]Lemon[/name]

I really, really love the suggestion of [name]Avril[/name] (or [name]Averil[/name], which is actually the spelling I am more familiar with)

[name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Gregor[/name] [name]Avis[/name]

[name]Lorcan[/name] [name]Gregor[/name] [name]Averil[/name] …I kind of feel like [name]Averil[/name] looks better written down, but [name]Avis[/name] sounds better out loud with the set?

Kath xx[/quote]

I disagree. I think [name]Averil[/name] looks and sounds better with [name]Lorcan[/name] and [name]Gregor[/name]. I really like the name [name]Averil[/name]. [name]Avis[/name] like [name]Ava[/name] is a little lacking to me. Not sure why. There’s just not enough there if that makes any sense. [name]Lorcan[/name], [name]Gregor[/name], and [name]Averil[/name] is a great sibset!
