We have pretty much settled on giving our son the middle name of [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], which is my FIL’s name. There are several other grandkids (this is our first) and nobody has referenced his name yet so we want to give that honor. Our last name is a Mc— last name so combined with [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], that’s a lot of syllables and “icks” going on.
Here are some of the names I have been thinking about –
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] (MY dad’s name but hubs not so sold, not that he doesn’t like my dad but not sure he wants them sharing a name? obviously we need to discuss this more, haha).
[name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] (I think [name_u]Sully[/name_u] is cute for nn - and then cool later on in life for him. But Hubs can’t get past that like, [name_m]Boston[/name_m] Southie image) - also seems like a lot of name.
[name_u]Casey[/name_u] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - [name_u]Casey[/name_u] seems so casual compared to [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] is my concern, is there any ring to this?
[name_m]Seamus[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - our last name ends in US as well “Mc***us” so I like the rhythm but is this like way too irish or a mouthful?
[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - My grandfather’s name, think [name_m]Tommy[/name_m] is very cute but is it too done?
[name_u]Shane[/name_u] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] - I’m not sold on one-syllable names, too quick to go with [name_u]Shane[/name_u]-y as a pet name which gets a little feminine. Not sure there is a ring to this either.
*I do have a thing with names that are everywhere and don’t want something too common - but not looking for something brand new or with creative spelling (I’ve dealt with that all my life).
*Not a fan of one-syllable names because of the petname thing (hate when my friends call their kids [name_u]James[/name_u]-y and [name_u]Quinn[/name_u]-y).
*We’re not THAT Irish, haha, but apparently I do have a style.
I like one syllable boy names, and [name_u]Shane[/name_u] would be great with [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] Mc—s. I think [name_u]Casey[/name_u] would be my second choice.
I also prefer [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] and [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] are nice too. [name_u]Love[/name_u] the nn [name_m]Tommy[/name_m].
I like [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] and [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] best, but [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] is a little boring and [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] is very Irish. Would you consider [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] as a first name?
My favorite is [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. I don’t think it is that common on little boys. I also think [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] and [name_u]Shane[/name_u] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] work nicely. Might you like [name_m]Ian[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] or [name_m]Callum[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]? They are similar to [name_u]Shane[/name_u] but with an additional syllable.
Right now I like [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] the best.
If you like [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] but the [name_m]Boston[/name_m] vibe is too heavy you could try:
[name_m]Sylvan[/name_m]
Sutherland
[name_u]Sutton[/name_u]
[name_m]Sumner[/name_m]
[name_m]Sylvester[/name_m]
[name_m]Solomon[/name_m]
[name_m]Sol[/name_m]
[name_m]Samson[/name_m]
My fave from your list is probably [name_u]Shane[/name_u], paired with the second and last names.
I would avoid [name_m]Seamus[/name_m] and [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] for the similar ending to your surname.
Have you thought about [name_m]Sean[/name_m]?
[name_u]Casey[/name_u] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] Mc-s has a good ring and flow to it. And you also avoid the nickname thing with this. I know a man called [name_u]Casey[/name_u] who goes by [name_m]Case[/name_m] which is a spunky nickname. It also less popular these days so doesn’t fall into the trendy category.
[name_m]Joshua[/name_m] is also a solid classic though has been very popular for many years. The boys I know called [name_m]Joshua[/name_m] often get nn Joshie, which may or may not bother you.
I love [name_u]Sullivan[/name_u] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m]. It’s long, perhaps, but has a great sound to it and [name_u]Sully[/name_u] is adorable. That said, if it’s a choice your partner doesn’t care for, it’s probably not the one.
Other choices I like are the traditional and handsome [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m] (doesn’t sound too done/standard to me), or [name_u]Casey[/name_u] [name_m]Frederick[/name_m], which I think is another good choice. It’s a familiar name that I don’t think is getting used on babies too much today, without making it sound dated.
