Lost Loves

These are the names you love, but for one reason or another would never use-and WHY?

Too unusual or far out there?
Too trendy/popular?
Hard to pronounce?
Namenapped by friend/family member?
Too irrevocably tied to a pop culture character?

Here is my own personal list…

[name]FABLE[/name]-(noun); a story, conveying a moral. I first saw this name on Girl’s Gone Child and I just loved her philosophy on motherhood. It may not technically be a name, but it has wonderful meaning and is completely unique. With that being said, I could never namenap this wonderful name. Wish I would of thought of it first  Also, I feel like it may not age well. Thoughts?

[name]LYRA[/name]-pronounced LIE-RUH. This one may still be in the running. It’s pretty much the only name DH hasn’t vetoed lol. It’s simple, rare and has beautiful associations with music and the stars. The only thing holding me back from using it, is I feel like people will constantly mispronounce it as [name]LEE[/name]-RUH. Ugh I just hate how that sounds. It completely ruins the name for me.

[name]FIONA[/name]-I have loved this name for as long as I can remember. It’s so beautiful and exotic sounding but of course the movie Shrek has ruined it for me. [name]Don[/name]'t get me wrong, I still think it’s a gorgeous name, it’s just every time I hear it I think green ogre. I wouldn’t want to put my little girl through that teasing. Friends and family have said that by the time she is in school, Shrek will be long forgotten. I just don’t know. Thoughts?

[name]DAHLIA[/name]-pronounced DAH-[name]LEE[/name]-UH. Like [name]Fiona[/name], it’s beautiful and exotic and one of my favorite flower names. Unfortunately, DH is not a fan. He much prefers [name]Violet[/name] which is also lovely, I just think it’s getting a bit too popular.

[name]IRIS[/name]-I absolutely adore this name but won’t use it for two reasons. [name]One[/name], DH doesn’t like it at all and two I absolutely butcher my R’s lol. Such a shame because it has such an awesome meaning. [name]Iris[/name] was a messenger-goddess who rode rainbows between heaven and earth to deliver messages from [name]Olympus[/name]. Seriously, it doesn’t get much cooler than that. I don’t know, maybe we’ll consider it as a middle name in the future.

Let’s hear your lists!

[name]Harper[/name] - I’ve loved this name since the first time I read “To Kill A Mockingbird.” I loved what the way the book was written, its messages, what it stood for…and for a long time I’ve wanted to name my future daughter after author [name]Harper[/name] [name]Lee[/name]. But I love unique names, and I feel like [name]Harper[/name] is going viral. I know three little girls named [name]Harper[/name], all under the age of two! It’s just too popular for me to consider using these days, but I’m still mourning the loss.

This isn’t a girl’s name, but I’m throwing it on here anyway…[name]Wyatt[/name] - This name was in my top three for a boy all through high school and college…I adored it. I still love it, but then there’s my dear boyfriend to consider. We’ve been together a long time, so I’ve started brainstorming baby names under the assumption that they’ll have his last name, which ends in the “-att” sound. It’s a little too rhyme-y for me, so I’ve retired it. I have thought though…it might make a comeback if BF and I break up…haha.

[name]Layla[/name]/[name]Leila[/name]-Its such a gorgeous sounding name! I still love it! Its just too popular. With all of the Lilys, [name]Lilas[/name], Lilianas, Lucys etc, It makes it seem even more popular! Such a shame. :frowning:

[name]Bridget[/name] - In theory I MIGHT be able to use it, if my brother and sister-in-law actually don’t use it for baby #1… we’ll see.
[name]Brooke[/name] - Damn you cousin [name]Brooke[/name]!
[name]Evie[/name] - My fiance oh so sweetly told me it reminded him of the Pokemon
[name]Laura[/name]/[name]Laurel[/name]/[name]Lauren[/name] - Cousin [name]Lauren[/name], you harm me so!
[name]Leah[/name]/[name]Leia[/name]/[name]Lucie[/name] - [name]Leia[/name] Lahey? [name]Oy[/name].
[name]Logan[/name]/[name]Spencer[/name] - Break my “no male name” rule
[name]Sadie[/name] - Why am I using my fiance’s two-syllable-ending-in-ee-name again?

If I made the list of all the name’s I loved, but fiance hated, this would be about 20 times as long. Oh well.

[name]Amelia[/name] - getting way popular and is similar-sounding to mega-popular [name]Emily[/name]
[name]Christelle[/name] - fell in love with it when I saw it on a French girl but everyone mistakes it for a trashy variation of [name]Crystal[/name]
[name]Cora[/name], [name]Nora[/name], [name]Audrey[/name], [name]Aurora[/name] - clash with last name
[name]Freya[/name] - would always be mispronounced/misspelled where I live (it’s completely unheard of here)
[name]Coralie[/name] - sounds made-up to most people (at least from the ones I’ve asked)
[name]Elsie[/name] - too close to all the [name]El[/name]- names that are really popular right now and would always be mistaken for [name]Elise[/name]
[name]Eloise[/name] - too pretentious-sounding where I live
[name]Felicity[/name] - vetoed, completely broke my heart because it’s perfect in every way to me
[name]Chloe[/name] - the first [name]Chloe[/name] I knew was a dog, which ruined the name for me
[name]Lucy[/name] - same as [name]Chloe[/name]
[name]Mia[/name] - I know a girl named [name]Mia[/name] that ruined the name for me & I have a friend that hates her so much she would be offended if I used it
[name]Jane[/name] nn [name]Janie[/name] - vetoed, but I was wary of the “Plain [name]Jane[/name]” jokes anyhow
[name]Scarlett[/name] nn [name]Carly[/name] - vetoed but I can’t stand [name]Scarlett[/name] Johansson anyway
[name]Georgia[/name] - cousin’s name
[name]Natalie[/name] - too popular
[name]Lily[/name] - too popular
[name]Sophie[/name] - too popular
[name]Cecilia[/name] - I know someone named this too well to use it in the middle spot but would love to honor her with MN
[name]Annabelle[/name] - same as [name]Cecilia[/name]
[name]Kathy[/name] - too dated

Wow my list was long haha…I’m still sad about most :frowning:

[name]Fiona[/name], [name]Maeve[/name], [name]Isla[/name] - <3 them all and they fit my husband’s naming criteria, but they are my cousins’ names.
Molly, Lucy - We considered these for our daughter, but we ended up giving her a different first name that is a variant of Mary and a different middle name that is a variant of Lucy, so to use them would be like naming our 2nd child the same name as the 1st, just in different languages. LOL!
Clementine, Apple - Don’t know why I love fruit names so much, but I do! Hubby won’t go for it, though. I doubt I’m brave enough anyway.
Lyra, Coraline - I think they’re so cute and unique without being weird, but I also feel they’re too associated with specific book characters. Good books, but still.
Laurel - Too matchy-matchy with 1st daughter’s name.
Violet - Hubby said no. But it’s my favorite color! LOL!
Elsa - Hubby said no. It’s also the name of a restaurant where we live (Well, the owner is named Elsa. The restaurant is named Elsa’s.) It’s a family name, though!

[name]Mallory[/name] - I absolutely love this beautiful name. But at my old high school, this was the name of the “IT” girl who was such a snob and bully.
[name]Isabella[/name] - I loved this name way before twilight, that and how popular it got now completely ruined it for me.
[name]Audrey[/name] - Huge [name]Audrey[/name] Hepburn fan, but now I know so many babies named “[name]Aubrey[/name]” and “[name]Aubree[/name].” It’s way too close.
[name]Naomi[/name] - This has been one of my favorites since I was a little girl, then someone pointed out what it said backwards and I just died lol.
[name]Ariel[/name] - The little mermaid was and is still one of my favorites. But then I started to babysit an [name]Ariel[/name] who kind of ruined the name for me.
[name]Madeline[/name] - Cousins name.
[name]Paisley[/name] - My boyfriends niece is named [name]Preslee[/name], that’s way too similar.

Too unusual or far out there? I like mostly down to earth & familiar names. I do love overly cutesy names like [name]Honey[/name], [name]Bunny[/name], [name]Kit[/name]…wouldn’t use them in full.
Too trendy/popular? [name]Amelia[/name], [name]Chloe[/name], [name]Annabelle[/name], basically every name I loved in high school cause I guess everyone else loved them just as much!
Hard to pronounce? [name]Helena[/name]. I say [name]Helen[/name]-uh. [name]Corinne[/name]. I say Kuh-rinn. But I don’t want her to have to clarify for the rest of her life!!
Namenapped by friend/family member? [name]Nina[/name]. Ugh [name]BIL[/name] & [name]SIL[/name] straight up name theft!
Too irrevocably tied to a pop culture character? [name]Allegra[/name] & [name]Ursula[/name]. Thanks a lot, Disney & allergy med company!

[name]RIP[/name] names!

“Namenapped” ha! love it, taz!

I’ve had several names that were namenapped. I had the names [name]Claire[/name] [name]Alexis[/name] and [name]Chloe[/name] (no mn yet) picked out since 6th grade. My [name]SIL[/name] got pregnant when I was in HS and I made the mistake of sharing my names. She had twins. Guess what she named them? [name]Claire[/name] [name]Alexis[/name] and [name]Chloe[/name] A. (middle after her sister).

Second time, I was telling my friend this same story and I told her I was still going to use [name]Alexis[/name] anyway. Guess what. She gets pregnant and has a girl named [name]Alexis[/name].

Needless to say I have learned my lesson.

Now I am having the dilemma of me and DH looooving the name [name]Elena[/name], but my third niece is Delana. I almost just don’t care anymore. :stuck_out_tongue:

Aside from [name]Fable[/name], I really like all of the other names that you’ve listed!

There are various names that I really like but won’t use because of associations or people who have named their child one of those names. I really liked [name]Noah[/name] for a boy, but someone ruined it for me. I told my cousin that [name]Alice[/name] was one of my favorites for a girl and she used it!

[name]Remember[/name]. I love it but it’s too far out. [name]Even[/name] for me! My friend had a daughter she was naming [name]Victoria[/name] nn [name]Tori[/name] (very cute I thought). Her [name]SIL[/name] kept saying Whore-y [name]Tori[/name] at the baby shower so that name was scrapped at the last minute at the hospital!

[name]Isabella[/name], [name]Emma[/name], [name]Sophie[/name] ~ [name]Love[/name] them but they’ve become ruined for me because of their popularity.
[name]Anouk[/name] ~ Oh, how I love this name. Unfortunately, it would be completely butchered where I live.
[name]Anais[/name] ~ See [name]Anouk[/name]
[name]Marguerite[/name] ~ [name]Love[/name], love, love this one! It would sound a bit pretentious where I live as an fn, however it’s definitely still up for mn consideration.
[name]Melisande[/name] ~ See [name]Marguerite[/name]
[name]Alexandra[/name] ~ Loved this one for a long time, unfortunately I met someone with this name (who mostly went by [name]Alex[/name]) who completely ruined it for me.
[name]Jane[/name] ~ Cousin’s middle name.

[name]SOPHIA[/name] - loved it long ago and love it today, but not enough for a future daughter to be called [name]Sophie[/name] B.

[name]CLARA[/name] - too many personal or past connections (good and bad) have some form of this name

[name]CORDELIA[/name] - ok maybe not lost yet, but much too long with our long last name

[name]MARGOT[/name] - a different form of my first name. I’m not a fan of naming children after the parents.

and, sadly, any name that ends in an -ee sound ([name]SYLVIE[/name], [name]LILY[/name], etc.) as they rhyme with our last name.

[name]Lily[/name]- It has gotten far too popular, and a cousin used it.
[name]Ava[/name]- see above
[name]Daphne[/name]- I love it, but I always think of Scooby Doo
[name]Willow[/name]- my best friend loves it
[name]Aurelia[/name]- we live near a town with that name
[name]Camryn[/name]- DH hates unisex names
[name]Artemis[/name]- DH vetoed

You have two of mine on your list.

[name]Iris[/name]- my favorite name and always what I thought I’d name my little girl… But now our last name starts with an ‘S’ and makes it sound like ‘[name]Ira[/name]’.

[name]Fiona[/name]- loved it since The [name]Secret[/name] of [name]Roan[/name] Inish (my cat is even Selkie), I never saw Shrek so that’s not a factor, but we’re in the [name]Boston[/name] area and anything Irish is very popular.

[name]Flora[/name] and [name]Laurel[/name]- love the both but my husband vetoes anything that sounds like a more common name because he thinks its confusing. He thinks these sound like [name]Laura[/name].

[name]Christabel[/name] - Too religious for my liking
[name]Bathshira[/name] - I would never do this to a child
[name]Rhapsody[/name] - It’s almost a stripper name
[name]Dorothea[/name] - I don’t like the meaning
[name]Jedidiah[/name] - Same as [name]Christabel[/name]
[name]Leopold[/name] - I don’t like how it’s pronounced
[name]Beauregard[/name] - This is just too odd for a child
[name]Lennon[/name] - I like it better as a middle name. Also, with the nickname [name]Lennie[/name], it reminds me of the character from Of Mice and Men

[name]Josephine[/name] nn [name]Josie[/name]. For a few days, when we first started talking baby names, this was the only girl’s name DH and I both instantly loved. And then we realized that we live in S [name]Asia[/name], where Joshi (jo-shee or jo-see) is a common surname. But, wait, that’s not it–it’s also my brother-in-law and sister’s last name! D’oh. I haven’t 100% ruled it out for the future…like, if we end up with 6 kids and that’s the only name we like that’s left. But it dropped pretty low on the list.

[name]Astrid[/name] My mom’s middle name, and, I think, gorgeous. Also, I have a thing for Scandinavian names…But I fear that no one would pronounce it right, and it is just a little too close to “a$$ turd,” as DH so helpfully pointed out.

[name]Violet[/name]. Adorable and a family name on DH’s side, but our last name starts with V. Double Vs is waaay harsh, imo, worse than most other alliteration combos. Maybe it would be too trendy to use anyway…but do love that such a cute name is a family name.

[name]Wilhelmina[/name]. [name]Adore[/name], not least for the total Germanness of it. But spelling, pronounciation, and combined with our very Dutch name…probably too much. DH would most likely veto, as well.

[name]Charlotte[/name]- My favorite since I was a child but now its way too popular. I’m still grieving that I’ll never have a [name]Charlotte[/name] [name]India[/name] [name]Rose[/name] :frowning:

[name]Violet[/name] - Ditto [name]Charlotte[/name]. But its not so bad because I’ve only liked this name for a few years. [name]Charlotte[/name] I loved forever.

[name]Emmeline[/name] - I have also loved this since I was a child, I thought it was so vintage and different. Unfortunately I have a cousin named [name]Emma[/name] and I don’t think our family would take it too well if I added an [name]Emmeline[/name].

[name]Genevieve[/name] - Sounds beautiful with my French last name, but I have a cousin [name]Jennifer[/name] who has a daughter whose name also has “[name]Jen[/name]” in it. I would never hear the end of it from my family, even though I would never call her “[name]Gen[/name]”, I’d probably call her [name]Evie[/name].

[name]Hermione[/name] - [name]Forever[/name] associated with [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name]. Not really a bad thing except most people see [name]Hermione[/name] [name]Granger[/name] as a know-it-all.

[name]Ever[/name] - I think this name is so beautiful and romantic but its too out-there for me and maybe a little too trendy

[name]Story[/name] - Again, too out there.

[name]Ireland[/name] - DH hates it, flat out refuses to consider it. No go on that front.

[name]Vivienne[/name] - DH dislikes it again.

[name]Sylvia[/name] - Same as the above.

[name]Sophia[/name] - I love this name but it’s the name of two girls in my preschool class and the association is too close.

[name]Evelyn[/name] - DH dislikes it, but we can’t use it anyways as [name]Eleanore[/name] and [name]Evelyn[/name] are too close for us, [name]Eleanore[/name] is non-negotiable.

[name]Zipporah[/name] - Honestly it just doesn’t match up with the names we like for our sib-set. Too out there for the other names we love.

[name]Margaux[/name] - DH dislikes again, plus we have too many ‘‘M’’ names as it is.

[name]Maeve[/name] - Same ^

[name]Wilhelmina[/name] - I love it, DH doesn’t think it goes but doesn’t hate it. Neither one of us love it enough to go on the list.

[name]Lauren[/name]…niece names [name]Laura[/name].
[name]Marin[/name] (muh-[name]RIN[/name])… Pronunciation problems :frowning:
[name]Cara[/name] (care-uh)… Possible pronunciation problems
[name]Natalie[/name]… Husband’s ex
[name]Bonnie[/name]…I feel it is too nicknameish
[name]Poppy[/name]…I feel it is too nicknameish

I also really like [name]Kelly[/name], [name]Brooke[/name], [name]Shannon[/name], [name]Heather[/name], and [name]Wendy[/name] but feel they are dated to the 70s and 80s. :frowning:
