For me being European… I always pronounce [name]Louis[/name] as [name]Louie[/name]… And assumed everyone else did the same!! However, I’ve noticed that on nameberry a lot of people pronounce [name]Louis[/name] as [name]Lewis[/name]? I’m wondering how you pronounce [name]Louis[/name] where you’re from? Also, I’m considering using [name]Louie[/name] to avoid pronunciation issues but then I feel the name losing some of its history and charm!! What do you think… [name]Louis[/name] or [name]Louie[/name]?
I prefer the [name]Louie[/name] pronunciation but I know a couple of [name]Louis[/name]'s who pronounce it [name]Lewis[/name].
[name]Louis[/name] is [name]Lou[/name]-ee, to me. [name]Lou[/name]-iss is [name]Lewis[/name].
[name]Louis[/name] is LOO-ee to me, and everyone I know by that name has pronounced like that. But it may be an Englishy thing. Liking [name]Louis[/name] though!
[name]Louis[/name] is loo-ee to me too. I think it’s a [name]Brit[/name] thing though (and we’re the only ones who are awake right now ;)).
I know 3 boys named [name]Louis[/name], 2 of them saying it like [name]Lewis[/name], one using the nn [name]Louie[/name]. The other pronounced it [name]Louie[/name] but ended up being called [name]Lewis[/name] as a nickname. If I saw [name]Louis[/name] on paper I would guess it’s pronounced [name]Lewis[/name] until told otherwise.

[name]Louis[/name] has always been LOO-iss, to me and I’m English. I know that [name]Louis[/name] in French is Loo-ee but I’m not sure about other European countries, I think in [name]England[/name] US [name]Louis[/name] would be pronounced like [name]Lewis[/name]. And although I dislike the look of [name]Louie[/name] and think it is very nickname-y, I think it would be better to use that if you want the Loo-ee pronunciation.
I used to pronounce it as [name]Louie[/name], because I went to primary school with a [name]Louis[/name] prn [name]Louie[/name] so that was what I was used to. However, one of my first year university flatmates had a friend who came over frequently called [name]Louis[/name] prn [name]Lewis[/name] so now I kind of alternate between the two. I believe [name]Louie[/name] is the traditional French way of saying it, at least the French kings were [name]Louis[/name] prn [name]Louie[/name] anyway. [name]Louis[/name] I think is kind of an Anglicisation of the name.
Personally, if I was naming, I’d go [name]Lewis[/name] for that prn and [name]Louis[/name] for [name]Louie[/name]. [name]Louie[/name] just looks too nicknamey to me in its spelling.
Definitely [name]Lou[/name]-ee to me, and almost everyone I know.
Around here, [name]Louis[/name] is more like [name]Lewis[/name] than the French lou-ee.
I think where I live most people would say [name]Lewis[/name] rather than [name]Lou[/name]-ee.
I am American and I prn it Loo-ee. Only because I know that is how the comedian [name]Louis[/name] CK prns it and that is the only [name]Louis[/name] I know of.
I call [name]Louis[/name] [name]Lewis[/name] except for [name]Louis[/name] [name]Armstrong[/name], but I knew his name before I ever saw it in writing.
On the [name]Louie[/name] spelling and pronunciation: my DH is [name]Louie[/name] [name]Dean[/name] and he always has trouble with people thinking it is a nickname and trying to put the “correct” spelling [name]Louis[/name].
I’ve known two people named [name]Louis[/name] who both pronounced it [name]Lewis[/name] (1 is a 1/2 Chinese, 1/2 Columbian US citizen from [name]China[/name] and one is a European mutt US citizen). When I see the name [name]Louis[/name] written, my internal voice sometimes goes to [name]Lewis[/name], sometimes goes to [name]Louie[/name], depending on the context and/or where the person is from. I’d say I’d expect a US [name]Louis[/name] to be [name]Lewis[/name] and a European [name]Louis[/name] to be [name]Louie[/name]. I pprefer the pronunciation [name]Lewis[/name] to [name]Louie[/name], but don’t like the spelling of [name]Lewis[/name] much.
I’m American and I pronounce it Loo-ee, but I know most people around here would pronounce it lewis. Unless they are [name]One[/name] Direction fans like my daughter, then they may pronounce it fine.
Spelling makes the difference for me. [name]Louis[/name] is ‘loo-ee’ (it’s a French first name) and the surname [name]Lewis[/name] is ‘loo-is’. [name]Louis[/name] is my preferred spelling.

I’ve only come across [name]Louis[/name] pronounced Loo-iss a couple of times and it always throws me off. If I’m reading it I read it Loo-ee, correct myself because I know it’s Loo-iss, but dislike pronouncing it that way in my head, as it seems incorrect.

I live in a town where it’s predominantly pronounced [name]Louie[/name], but it’s not unheard of to meet a [name]Louis[/name] prn [name]Lewis[/name] either. It really depends on the parents’ knowledge of French pronunciation and heritage.
