Love at First Sight: Name Edition

Hey Nameberries,
Was there ever a name which you just came across, whether in a magazine, a friend of a friend on Facebook, or a classmate/colleague/etc, and just thought straightaway was simply breathtaking? Not talking about meeting someone and thinking, “Oh, that’s a nice name…”-- my line of thought is more along the lines of “I’m-about-to-record-a-15-song-debut-album-about-how-much-I-love-this-name” type feelings. (Or something comparable-- you interpret it as you like, haha.)

For me it was a [name_f]Dulcinea[/name_f] (friend at a summer camp from way back) who went by Dulc (pronounced Dulch.) Her parents were Spanish and her name was fascinatingly foreign to me. Still love the name now!

Really interested to see which names knocked y’all off your feet.

  • [name_f]Margaret[/name_f]

Great thread!

For me it was [name_f]Azalea[/name_f]—I’ve known about the flower for ages, but hearing it as a name for the first time was a revelation. Still love it and would name a kid that in a heartbeat.

[name_f]Susanna[/name_f] is my all-time favorite name, but that one was more of a slow burn

For me it’s the names [name_u]Bristol[/name_u] and [name_u]Shiloh[/name_u]. Both are typically not well liked but I love them. They’re spunky and sweet and I can imagine a girl of any kind with these name.

yes! For me it was [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Talitha[/name_f] and [name_m]Felix[/name_m]

[name_f]Estella[/name_f] probably! Last year my school assigned us to read a Dickens novel and I got Great Expectations. The character might not be the best but her name is beautiful

[name_u]Hero[/name_u] (from A Midsummer [name_m]Night[/name_m]’s [name_u]Dream[/name_u], which we read at school), [name_f]Anouk[/name_f] (from Chocolat), and [name_m]Pippin[/name_m] for a girl (an acquaintance’s daughter).

For a boy, [name_m]Florin[/name_m] (from The [name_f]Princess[/name_f] [name_f]Bride[/name_f]).

For me it was [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]. I can’t remember where I first heard the name, but I also can’t remember a time in my life when I knew [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] was a name and didn’t absolutely love it to pieces.

I suspect that if I ever have a [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], lots of friends and family will assume that I first heard it on Orphan [name_m]Black[/name_m], which I’m a fan of. But they’ll have it backwards—I started watching OB because I heard there was a character called [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]. I love the name THAT much.

[name_f]Eulalie[/name_f]! I was on Pinterest and there was a nursery for a little one named [name_f]Eulalie[/name_f]. In the text below the picture it said “[name_f]Eulalie[/name_f]'s Playfully Bohemian Nursery”. It was such a precious nursery and it made me really fall for the name. I think seeing it written down / used somewhere other than on a name site helped me see the appeal more too.

[name_f]Constance[/name_f]! I never used to be one for virtue names (despite my name being a virtue name), but I fell in love with it immediately. Then when I found out it was my great grandmother’s name, it was a dream come true .

Cornelia and Adonis

One of my friends are named a diminutive of Cornelia (Nele) and when we looked it up and found it came from Cornelia and I immediately fell head over heels.

Heard Adonis in a song and loved it, but since English is my second language I was unsure whether it was a word I just hadn’t heard of. When I found it on this site I really fell in love with it.

[name_u]Reeve[/name_u] (m) since I read it in “A Face on a Milk Carton” as an adolescent.
[name_f]Vianne[/name_f] in “Chocolat” (although I prefer [name_f]Vienne[/name_f])
Avonlea from [name_f]Anne[/name_f] of [name_u]Green[/name_u] Gables
[name_f]Marina[/name_f] and Kavita since I met them in college.
[name_f]Cherie[/name_f] was the name of a lady who signed a posting in elevators in [name_u]North[/name_u] [name_f]Carolina[/name_f].
[name_m]Trent[/name_m] a character in “[name_f]Daria[/name_f]”
[name_u]Tate[/name_u] and [name_m]Gage[/name_m], contestants in early seasons of “Face Off”
[name_u]Oberon[/name_u], [name_m]Jorah[/name_m], and [name_m]Dario[/name_m] from GoT
[name_m]Darrow[/name_m] from a [name_m]History[/name_m] [name_f]Channel[/name_f] documentary about the Scopes Monkey Trial
[name_m]Rhett[/name_m] and Careen from “Gone With the Wind”
[name_f]Catalina[/name_f] from “Life as a House”…referring to floating off to [name_f]Catalina[/name_f] island
Within the past several years as I have been more seriously thinking about names: Joule, [name_f]Marisol[/name_f], [name_f]Jovie[/name_f], [name_f]Aviva[/name_f], [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f], Majorelle, [name_f]Endellion[/name_f], Maiwenn, [name_f]Sabine[/name_f], [name_f]Solenne[/name_f], [name_m]Devereaux[/name_m], [name_f]Revel[/name_f], [name_m]Stavros[/name_m]

I think [name_f]Evangeline[/name_f], Nefertari and [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] are mine.

[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] comes from Spark, one of my favourite books. I thought [name_f]Evie[/name_f] was kickass, I love [name_f]Evie[/name_f] names and it’s meaning was beautiful I was like yes this is one of my favourites.

I’m not 100% clear where I saw Nefertari first, I used to love [name_f]Nefertiti[/name_f] but could never get over seeing titties, especially with my brother pointing it out every time i said the name so I remember searching for an alternative. I also remember going through a list of international and historical royal names and seeing it and I also remember it coming up in a buzzfeed quiz and each time I was like that is a stunning name. Regardless, I love her and she’s definitely a love at first sight name, no matter which sight came first.

[name_m]Malachi[/name_m] was when I was reading the bible cover to cover. I was already thinking of a long name for [name_u]Mal[/name_u] and potentially [name_u]Kai[/name_u] and [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] ticked both boxes. I couldn’t believe that such a perfect name existed.

[name_u]Roscoe[/name_u]. I loved everything about it from the first time I heard it.

[name_f]Lavinia[/name_f], upon hearing the name of one of my eccentric great aunts in conversation.
Also, [name_f]Violet[/name_f].

[name_f]Ilaria[/name_f]. Came across it on another name website and was immediately in love with its sound, appearance and magical feel

I have loved the name [name_f]Magnolia[/name_f] since I met a little girl at my church who went by [name_f]Nola[/name_f]. I thought that it was adorable!

Also, I love the name [name_f]Gypsy[/name_f]. I first thought of it as a name because of the book series Savvy by [name_f]Ingrid[/name_f] [name_m]Law[/name_m]. I can just see a whimsical little [name_f]Gypsy[/name_f] picking wildflowers.

Speaking of whimsical, I think [name_f]Whimsy[/name_f] is like fireflies on a buzzing summer night. I love the sounds of “Wh” so I love this! I think I may have made it up though.

Oh, and the names [name_m]Nathaniel[/name_m] “[name_u]Nat[/name_u]” and Thacia (from Malthace). I read [name_f]Carry[/name_f] On Mr. Bowditch and The Bronze [name_m]Bow[/name_m] for in the home school program that I do (Classical Conversations), and I believe the names to be stunning.

Esmerie! I just think it sounds like a song.

[name_f]Greta[/name_f], the first time I heard it i almost died. 2 years later, I named my baby [name_f]Greta[/name_f]. ”

My name love at first sight is Artemísia. I heard the first time watching the movie 300: Rise of an Empire. Artemísia, an awesome character and villain, was played by [name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_u]Green[/name_u] - an incredibly talented actrees and beautiful woman.

[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] for me! I have since found a distaste for it though because of how popular it’s becoming which I feel sad for. I’ve not had many moments like that before
