To be honest, I don’t like it at all. I don’t know what it is about the name… It’s just really strange. A little too different. Maybe because it reminds me of rigging (as in cheating), or big rigs. Neither of those things are particularly great.
I actually like Riggins with the nn Riggs. I think the first thought that came to my mind was [name_m]Tim[/name_m] Riggins from Friday [name_m]Night[/name_m] [name_m]Light[/name_m]'s. Possible inspiration?
I think that Riggins [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] doesn’t have a very good flow to it, as in I think Riggins would sound better with a different middle name, but honestly, you don’t usually call your child their entire name so that’s definitely not a deal breaker.
If you are second guessing yourself, it seems you like surname type names, here are some suggestions on the surnames list here at Nameberry.
I personally like the following with [name_u]Blaine[/name_u].
[name_m]Dawson[/name_m] [name_u]Blaine[/name_u]
[name_m]Huxley[/name_m] [name_u]Blaine[/name_u]
[name_m]Jacoby[/name_m] [name_u]Blaine[/name_u]
[name_m]Lawson[/name_m] [name_u]Blaine[/name_u]
[name_u]Wylie[/name_u] [name_u]Blaine[/name_u]
At the end of the day you and your husband need to choose the name that the two of you love, this is your child and you do not need to cater to anyone else’s desire concerning naming. My little girl is named [name_f]Isla[/name_f], there were several family members that didn’t really like it, but they got over it.
Good luck with whatever choice you make and best wishes for an easy pregnancy and a smooth and safe labor and delivery.
It made me think of rigging as in cheating too, which is really not a positive connection. It reminds me of a surname, perhaps it is? Maybe you could look at other uncommon surname names and see if you can find one you like just as much? [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] is a great middle name that will work with most names.
I will second jtucker and say this is your son, and you get to name him whatever name you love.
Admittedly, that is really tough when you get negative feedback from family and friends; an ideal name is one loved by all (my sister secretly hated our DD’s name before she was born and then suddenly it clicked and she loved it once she met her).
if you’re doubting your choice, the name that’s popped to mind for you is [name_u]Remington[/name_u] [name_u]Blaine[/name_u], nn [name_u]Remy[/name_u] or Riggs. It might be more approachable than Riggins.
I know I already commented on this thread, but I think that @jo jo has a wonderful suggestion is you decide that Riggins isn’t right for you. [name_u]Remington[/name_u] [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] sounds very nice.
Actually I quite like it. Another name I like that it reminds me of is [name_m]Briggs[/name_m] which may be a tad more familiar to others, although this baby is you and your husband’s to name so choose what you love. I wouldn’t entertain further discussion re your choice with family and friends because it’s hard when they respond negatively to your choices.
Thank you for the kind thoughts. [name_m]Tim[/name_m]
Riggins from Friday [name_m]Night[/name_m] Lights is actually exactly the inspiration. I didn’t think it had a wonderful flow either. I actually like [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] Riggins better as far as flow, but figured since Riggins would be what we’d call him, then why not put that first? Our last name is [name_m]Smith[/name_m], which was another reason to have something different for a first name.
I have never heard of it, and I must admit it doesn’t grab me very much. It makes me think of an old English butler… But, it is your baby, so just because family doesn’t like it, does not mean you should change your mind.
Ditto to this!
I would be very confused upon learning that Riggins isn’t a family surname. I think you should keep looking.
I can see wanting a name that is not in the top 50 or 100, but to seek an unpopular name, I don’t know.
Would either of you like to have been named Riggins? I wouldn’t!
I also immediately thought of Friday [name_m]Night[/name_m] Lights, which I love I like it and I think Riggs is cute. I can see how some people might be confused by it as a first name though. I know a little boy named Rigden, which could also be shortened to Riggs but maybe seems a little more “namey” I guess. Or perhaps [name_m]Ridge[/name_m]? But if you both love Riggins and are only second guessing it after some comments from other people then I say stick with it! There will always be people who don’t like the name you pick, even if it’s ranked #1.
My freshman year of high school my earth science teacher was Mr. Riggins! He was so lively and just a very fun teacher. Growing up, I wasn’t much of a fan of science, but he definitely sparked my liking for science! Another thing I think of when I hear Riggins is big trucks, which I think is cool, I love everything automotive. I also really like the nickname Riggs!
I would say if you guys love it, I wouldn’t worry about other people’s thoughts on the name
I honestly had to giggle when I saw the thread title. It just sounds a bit silly.
Riggins is the name of a small town in central Idaho, along the [name_u]Salmon[/name_u] [name_u]River[/name_u] and close to [name_u]Seven[/name_u] Devils Mountains and Hells [name_u]Canyon[/name_u] (gorgeous places!). It’s a hub for rafting and kayaking and fishing… so for me, the name Riggins kind of evokes a rugged western landscape. (I instantly thought of Idaho when I saw the name…but I’m not sure if that will mean anything to you).
I honestly can’t see what’s so bad about it. I mean, [name_m]Ryder[/name_m] is in the top 100 and to me it is way more ridiculous than Riggins. In general people are choosing more unique names than they used to- not every little boy is named [name_m]William[/name_m] or [name_m]Christopher[/name_m] like they were 25 years ago. I actually like the nickname Riggs, and I agree with everyone who’s said that once it’s actually attached to a cute little baby, people will warm up to it.
I really love the name [name_u]Blaine[/name_u] but I feel like Riggins would be better as a middle then a first name
Riggins certainly isn’t my cup of tea. Riggins makes me think of Wiggins, which sounds like a mix between wagging and wiggling. That said, I think Riggs is cute!
BUT I don’t hate it. I don’t think it’s too far outside the realm of what’s considered normal and acceptable. And just as other people have said, once the name is attached to a baby, and they begin associating that name with an actual person, I’m sure it will grow on them.
My husband and I have a very common, boring last name too, so I totally get where you’re coming from with wanting an unusual first name. We also went with a very unusual name for our daughter, but gave her a nickname that’s very familiar but still a little unusual, kind of like what you’re considering. Since we were choosing such an unusual name, we decided to keep it secret from EVERYONE until she was born, and I’m pleased with that decision.
The important is find a name that makes you, your husband and your little boy happy. If both of you agree in Riggins and you think that your child will be proud to use it, so it’s ok. [name_m]Don[/name_m]'t worry about your last name be very common, your baby boy will be special for you anyway.
Good luck and congratulations for the baby!
