Love the name Esther, but do you? :)

[name]Hi[/name] guys!
I was reading the NB blog today where they were talking about “er” names. It reminded of an old name I love, which is [name]Esther[/name]! I do really love this name. The [name]Esther[/name] in the Bible is really special to me. She was an amazing woman. I also love the nickname [name]Essie[/name]! I think it’s super cute! I really like the combo [name]Esther[/name] [name]Dawn[/name] too. So enough of me talking! What do you think of the name [name]Esther[/name]? I never really hear it around the message boards… It’s definitely not popular among baby namers. Anyways. I’m interested to hear some feedback.

I like it, especially the nickname [name]Essie[/name].
Adorable.

I love [name]Esther[/name]! It’s one of the vintage names I wish more parents would seriously consider. So my advice to you: dust off this old gem and make her shine! I love the nn [name]Essie[/name]. One of my fave combos is [name]Esther[/name] [name]Pearl[/name]. All the best!

[name]Essie[/name] is adorable! Totally makes the name for me. I love [name]Esther[/name] [name]Pearl[/name], quite lovely.

[name]Esther[/name] isn’t on the top of my list, simply because the sound doesn’t appeal to me. I would definitely be impressed if I saw it on another persons child, though.

I adore this name. She is an amazing character, and the name is strong like her. I do think it rings rather serious, strong, and studious - that is not a bad combination, but admittedly a rather specific one. I have known two Esthers, one was a very playful young woman I was a student with, and I will admit the name felt a little odd on her at first, although of course once I got to know her I got used to it (to be sure, my name, [name]Jessica[/name], does not fit my personality much either, although I feel like [name]Jess[/name] does). The other was an older secretary, and it was actually similar - although it kind of fit her age and job better, she was so mild-mannered that it took some getting used to too (and of course I did).

While I like the name itself, I also like the idea of any name with a meaning relating to star to pay homage to the character. [name]Roxana[/name] is a favorite of mine.

[name]Essie[/name] is really cute, indeed!

All best!

[edited as I typed the opposite of what I meant to say at one point! : D]

I love it.

Yea!! I’m so glad to hear that other people like the name. I’m pleasently surprised. This makes me happy. [name]Mischa[/name]: I so agree. It’s vintage but classy. You don’t see anyone using it. [name]Esther[/name] [name]Pearl[/name] sounds just fabulous as well.

Thanks for your input, berries! If anyone has anything to add about the name, I’d love to hear.

Honestly, I don’t much care for [name]Esther[/name]. I do see the appeal in it being a smart, no-nonsense name with a great namesake, but the sound to me is lacking a bit of the warmth and whimsy that I value in a girl’s name. It’s just a little too harsh and just a tad bit dowdy. I’ll even say that I feel this way despite [name]Esther[/name] being my late great-grandmother’s name. Sorry!

I think that [name]Essie[/name] is just adorable, though, and I think [name]Essa[/name] - I bet some people even pronounce [name]Esther[/name] like that! - would be a more modern version. As for your [name]Esther[/name] [name]Dawn[/name] combination, I think [name]Essa[/name] [name]Roxanne[/name] (or [name]Essa[/name] [name]Roxane[/name]) would be a sassy way to get the same meaning: “dawn star.”

[name]Lemon[/name]

It always makes me think of polyester, so I am not a fan.

It’s interesting. I love a lot of old, biblical, vintagy, classic names… but [name]Esther[/name] I just can’t wrap myself around. I think it is the sound, as [name]Lemon[/name] stated, maybe I too am missing something there. It just doesn’t have the appeal to me that some of the others do.

[name]Just[/name] a recap: I do love the name. But I know a lot of people don’t, especially off of here. I think the polyester thing explains a lot of the negative reaction the name gets, and it does also rhyme with a lot of other funny/negative/unfortunate words and names: [name]Lester[/name], jester, pester, molester (I’ve also seen discussions on here where these associations and others are weighing down the gorgeous, also star-related name [name]Celeste[/name] - I don’t think it should stop anyone, but understand if it does!). Also for full disclosure: I used to react more similarly to [name]Lemon[/name] to the name, but the book of [name]Esther[/name] has come to have increased meaning for me over the years, and I can’t think of the name without feeling that love now.

Besides looking into “star” names as relatives if it’s not the one for you, I recently noticed that [name]Therese[/name]/[name]Theresa[/name] uses all the letters of the name, and of course there is sound overlap. I don’t know if you like that name, of course it’s very different even with the overlap, but it’s a thought. I also like the sound connection between [name]Tara[/name] and these names, since one etymology for [name]Tara[/name] also has it meaning star.

All best!

To be honest I used to always think of [name]Esther[/name] as quite harsh sounding and old ladyish. But now the old lady names are more in I actually don’t mind it. But I do have a bit of an aversion to girls names ending in ‘er’ which seems like a boys name ending to me, which is silly because [name]Esther[/name] is tradtionally a girls name.
I used to like the name [name]Estella[/name], but I now kind of think of it as overly frilly. I REALLY like [name]Estee[/name] and just discovered [name]Estera[/name], which i love.
[name]Essie[/name] is very cute!

I think the name [name]Esther[/name] is great. However, the combination “[name]Esther[/name] [name]Dawn[/name]” generates the sound “turd” in the middle.

My [name]SIL[/name] is [name]Susanna[/name] and goes by [name]Essie[/name] which suits her. I think it is a cute nn for [name]Esther[/name] also. Plus, nice to have a formal name for resumes etc as she gets older! [name]Little[/name] girls aren’t little forever!

Alright! This is more what I was expecting to see when I started this topic.

[name]Lemon[/name] - I so hear you on the warmth issue. It is a somewhat cold name. [name]Even[/name] though it hurts to say it, I agree there. I appriciate your honost oppions. That’s exactly what I wanted. [name]Love[/name] [name]Essa[/name]! [name]Essa[/name] [name]Roxanne[/name] really makes the name more up to date.

Poptart - Lol! Hah, I hadn’t even thought of polyester. Hmm. Yeah, that doesn’t realy bother me. ; )

Jesba - Thank you! You couldn’t have hit it better. I completely agree. Yes, I suppose [name]Esther[/name] does ryhme with some funny words. It definitely doesn’t turn me away from the name, but again I see how others might not be keen on it. [name]Just[/name] like you said. …Perfect explanation on the name.

[name]Maxie[/name] - I usually don’t care for “er” ending names on girls either! [name]Esther[/name] though I have a soft spot for.

Holey - Oh! You are right. Maybe I will have to re-think the [name]Dawn[/name] middle name. ; )

[name]Love[/name] all the feedback. If anyone has anything else to add I’d loveee to hear! SJ
