Love unusual names? Help me!

Apparently, I have a formula for names. 4 syllable first, 3 syllable middle, 2 syllable second middle (if using). I have a 1 syllable last name - a flower that begins with R. My head is stuck on this formula, but I’m also weird and picky and maybe a bit OCD and hoping all your brilliant minds can help!

  • So far all of my names have a [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek connection, but I’m running out of usable ideas for that. Huge sci fi fan, so other universes are totally cool.
  • I love the idea of having a badass heroine name as the 3-syllable middle.
  • 2 syllable second middle would be imagery?

For example: my #1 for next baby girl is [name_f]Veridian[/name_f] [name_f]Elora[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f], not going to change, just looking for more/future options.
[name_f]Veridian[/name_f]: green is husband’s favorite color, I love to paint, planet in [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek Generations
[name_f]Elora[/name_f]: the baby from [name_f]Willow[/name_f], has a sequel trilogy of books about her as a teen and they are awesome
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]: the moon, I love [name_m]Greco[/name_m]-[name_m]Roman[/name_m] mythology, in above-mentioned books [name_f]Elora[/name_f]'s skin turns silver (shines like moonlight)

My two older kids from a previous relationship have middles Xanadu (paradise, hidden city) and [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] (the sun), so then [name_f]Luna[/name_f] (the moon) and then I would love to have one that means star.

My 4 syllable short list is [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], Illyria, [name_f]Amadea[/name_f], Nymeria, Zerynthia…
I’m in love with [name_f]Adora[/name_f] as a 3 syllable heroine, because she-ra, princess of power! Lol.
I love [name_f]Elen[/name_f] as the 2 syllable star name, means star in a Tolkien Elvish and my grandmother’s mn is [name_f]Ellen[/name_f].

Other than [name_f]Elen[/name_f], none of these names has “sparked” or “stuck” with me like [name_f]Veridian[/name_f] [name_f]Elora[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. So, hit me with some fantastical names from long ago or far away please! Would love to hear your connection to them, or where they are from.

Thank you for your kind suggestions!

Bumping this because I’d love to see what the Berries come up with for you!

I am not tied to the specific order of place/heroine/image, but I have noticed that my favorite combos contain each of these elements. And sometimes I like 1 syllable 2nd middles, like [name_f]Nyx[/name_f], [name_u]Vale[/name_u], [name_f]Fae[/name_f], and [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]. Lol.

[name_u]Vega[/name_u] (name of a star)

[name_f]Veridian[/name_f] is gorgeous and I love [name_f]Elora[/name_f] and [name_f]Luna[/name_f], though the two L sounds so close together make it a little clunky for me to say, it is still really beautiful.

I like a few unusual or “out there” names (like J.R.R Tolkien’s Tinuviel swoon) but for the most part I tend to like vintage or rather retro sounding names. I’m really interested to hear what other Berries come up with for you, though! Your other kids have such unique and lovely names. I especially adore [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] as I am in love with Greek mythology, and [name_f]Elen[/name_f] as an alternative to [name_f]Ellen[/name_f] with an Elvish flare is lovely, too!

I really love [name_f]Veridian[/name_f] [name_f]Elora[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f]!

Thank you all for your suggestions! There are some truly great names here.

Right now I think my 2 favorites are [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f]. [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] and [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] have been long-time favorites, but it feels a little strange to use them alongside sister [name_f]Luna[/name_f], and with a middle name meaning “star.”

And, even though it doesn’t fit with my 4 syllable style, I am in love with [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] as a first name! [name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f] and [name_f]Zephyra[/name_f] are pretty too, but I definitely prefer [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u]. It’s been a favorite of mine for a reeeeally long time, but I seem to be the only one who likes it so much, lol.

I’m definitely loving [name_f]Elen[/name_f] as my 2 syllable star name. Another variant is Elwen, “star maiden,” and from [name_f]Ele[/name_f] “glimmering starlight” comes Elewen Meaning “glimmering starlight girl” (pronounced like popular [name_f]Elowen[/name_f], just a little softer - [name_f]Ella[/name_f]-wen.

I’m really looking for something that matches with Utopia and [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m], which I realize is going to be a tall order, LOL. So I think [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] works, and I do really like it for a variety of reasons (ancient mythology and sci fi connections, astronomy, pretty) but I find myself wondering if it is too “obvious.” [name_f]Veridian[/name_f] came about rather magically - I suggested [name_m]Viridian[/name_m] as a middle name (thinking boy but didn’t specify), and my husband said he loved it as a first name for a girl, and I think it works wonderfully with Utopia and [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m]. Saying all the names out loud together to myself, [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] seems to be the next best pick. But [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] also sounds good (and I love it), I just wonder if having such a short name works with having such long names on my other children? [name_m]Will[/name_m] she be the odd one out? Lol. Zephyrina is pretty, but is that trying too hard?

So…
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] ??? [name_f]Elen[/name_f]
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] Elewen ??

[name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] ??? ??
[name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Elen[/name_f]?

Any ideas? Am I headed in the right direction, or just driving myself crazy? Thank you!

Here are some lists I’ve put together in my insanity inducing hunt:
4 syllable first names
3 syllable middle names
2 syllable middle names

What about [name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] for a first middle name? Female Greek philosopher and mathematician.

As far as [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] fitting in with the rest, I would say as a third child she would fit right in. Utopia, [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m] and [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] has a nice flow to it. However, as a fourth child I’m not so sure. Utopia, [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m], [name_f]Veridian[/name_f], and [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u]. Something there just feels off. But maybe it’s just me!

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] and [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] both work well, but I think [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] might be my favorite for you. It reminds me of the painter [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] Gentileschi. She was definitely a badass heroine in her own right, and this connotation takes it a little bit farther from the moon vibes of [name_u]Artemis[/name_u]. Though there’s so much more to [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] than just the moon! Patron of wild animals, maidens, the hunt…

[name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] [name_f]Elen[/name_f]?? It breaks all your rules, but I kind of love it.

What a fun thread, and awesome naming style! I can see where you really want names that go for future siblings to your children, because they have brilliant names. Names that stand out and create a presence. I’m not much in sci fi etc, so these names probably won’t have that connection for the most part and therefor might not be quite what you’re looking for, but just for fun maybe:

Corinthia -ancient [name_u]Green[/name_u] city

But back to your names, you have a great start I think. I love [name_f]Elen[/name_f]/Elwen/Elewen for you. Maybe [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] Elewen [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u]?

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Nephele[/name_f] [name_f]Elen[/name_f]

[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] [name_f]Kateri[/name_f] [name_f]Elen[/name_f]
[name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] Lyonesse [name_f]Elen[/name_f]

Ok, that got a little long, I probably got a little carried away ;). All the best with finding the perfect name for #3!

I wish I knew more about fantasy because this seems like a really interesting problem!

I will say that I think Utopia, [name_m]Tiberius[/name_m] and [name_f]Veridian[/name_f] are perfectly matched, you’ve got this combo really right. And [name_f]Elen[/name_f] seems like a really good option for a middle for another girl

Some ideas I’ll throw out:

[name_f]Vala[/name_f]

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I so appreciate you all putting your minds to work on this! And thank you for the lovely feedback on [name_f]Veridian[/name_f] [name_f]Elora[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f]! I do so adore her name, it is quite magical.

@vivi_simone:
[name_f]Hypatia[/name_f] as a person is awesome, I just don’t love the name  Aesara is a little more my style.

@quirkflower:
Agreed, there is so much more to [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] than the moon! But, I’m also a huge fan of [name_u]Sailor[/name_u] [name_f]Moon[/name_f], and there are a pair of cats named [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_u]Artemis[/name_u], so doing that in a sibset is a little too kitschy even for me lol. [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f], however… That I can get behind. I love that romantic, musical feeling of the name… She’s a painter, like me… Feminist, strong, definitely a role model. For her to break all my naming rules is rather perfect.

[name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] [name_f]Elen[/name_f].

I love it!

I still want to try to come up with an [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f] or other combo, because my husband hasn’t been super keen on [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] the many, many times I’ve brought it up… But that combo up there is a definite winner for me. Thank you!

My favorites from everyone’s suggestions so far:
Ilithyia
Corinthia
[name_f]Olympia[/name_f]
[name_f]Athena[/name_f] ([name_u]Love[/name_u], but we have a friend named this)
[name_f]Zoraida[/name_f] (also love [name_f]Zorina[/name_f])
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] ( is one of my favorites, but my name is [name_f]Auriel[/name_f] and I just can’t. I’ll hold out hope that maaaaybe I will get a granddaughter named [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] someday  )
[name_f]Demetria[/name_f]
[name_f]Theodosia[/name_f]
[name_f]Wisteria[/name_f]
[name_f]Nova[/name_f] (my cousin named his daughter this, so that’s out)
[name_f]Boheme[/name_f]
[name_u]Vega[/name_u]
[name_f]Antinea[/name_f]
[name_f]Atalanta[/name_f]
Audovera
Corinthia
Elysande (WOW that is gorgeous)
[name_f]Pacifica[/name_f] is pretty, but can’t use because my ex named her son [name_m]Pacific[/name_m]
Rohesia, is that a typo? Thinking it was maybe one of the Rho- names like Rhodesia and [name_f]Rhodeia[/name_f] which I love, but last name is [name_f]Rose[/name_f] so that’s out :frowning:
Lilivere
Zosime
[name_f]Atria[/name_f]
[name_f]Zosma[/name_f]
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Carina[/name_f]
[name_f]Aenea[/name_f] (love this)

From the names you’ve given, I think I like [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] better, even though its actually five syllables, and [name_f]Amadea[/name_f]. Some other good ones: [name_f]Persephone[/name_f], [name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] (from Fringe. Not sure if you’ve ever seen that, but it’s a great science fiction show by JJ Abrams), [name_f]Galilea[/name_f] (Like [name_m]Galileo[/name_m], but for a girl), Corellia (star wars), Luminara (also SW), Kaywinnit (From [name_u]Joss[/name_u] Whedon’s Firefly - not 4 syllables I know, but there is just something about this name that I love)

Second middle badass heroine names are my favorite. There’s no guarantee they’ll be science-fiction, but I still think they fit the bill: [name_f]Hermione[/name_f], [name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] (LotR), [name_f]Minerva[/name_f], [name_f]Athena[/name_f], [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] (not 3 syllables, but fits the idea as both the video-game character and also author [name_f]Zelda[/name_f] [name_m]Fitzgerald[/name_m]), [name_f]Ravenna[/name_f], [name_f]Morgana[/name_f]…

For your star name, there’s [name_f]Yvaine[/name_f], which was a fictional name created by [name_u]Neil[/name_u] Gaiman for one of his main characters in the book (and later movie) Stardust. I think it’s supposed to mean ‘fallen star’ and is (in my opinion) very pretty.

You’ll want to check this list out. It’s mostly fantasy inspired names, but they’re really cool and could give you some ideas: Enchantment | Nameberry

And also this one: Stardust and Moonbeams | Nameberry

@redrobin, thanks for coming! First off, love Fringe

I’m pretty set on the combo [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] [name_f]Artemisia[/name_f] [name_f]Elen[/name_f], which came out of this thread, but I still feel like I need another option because the husband has not been too keen on [name_u]Zephyr[/name_u] whenever I bring it up. I do love [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], so I’m focusing on that but definitely girly open to others.

[name_f]Amadea[/name_f] was actually my top contender for a long time, but I started reevaluating because the middles I had picked out no longer appealed ([name_f]Amadea[/name_f] [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] [name_f]Merci[/name_f] - [name_f]Astraea[/name_f] felt too matchy and [name_f]Merci[/name_f] is [name_f]MIL[/name_f]'s middle name which is cool… But she is truly awful and we are about to cut her out of our lives. So. Back to the drawing board.)

[name_f]Persephone[/name_f] is fun, sounds a bit like [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] but I still love it
[name_f]Henrietta[/name_f] is too unlike the other names I have going already - important to me to have a cohesive theme and the one that has taken shape is definitely [name_m]Greco[/name_m]-[name_m]Roman[/name_m] with sci-Fi/literary bonus connection. eye roll I know, I am impossible.
[name_f]Galilea[/name_f] - has been my #2 to [name_f]Amadea[/name_f] for quite a while. I also associate it with [name_m]Galileo[/name_m]. I had never heard this name, and came up with it one night a couple of years ago. [name_f]Galilea[/name_f] and [name_f]Galilee[/name_f] are getting a lot of attention here on nameberry lately, but as [name_m]Christian[/name_m] place names, and as a non-religious person I do not like those connotations.

Corellia - pretty!!
Luminara - maybe? I will put it on my list, I really like the sound. Feels close to [name_f]Luna[/name_f]?
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] is definitely is definitely a gp for me. [name_u]Truly[/name_u] a heroine.
[name_f]Eowyn[/name_f] is another favorite
[name_f]Minerva[/name_f], can’t get behind, had a joke in hs about “gets-on-mi-nervsa”
[name_f]Athena[/name_f], we have a friend with a daughter named this so it’s out (love it though!!!)
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f] would be pretty awesome
[name_f]Ravenna[/name_f],I prefer [name_u]Raven[/name_u]
[name_f]Morgana[/name_f] I love
[name_f]Yvaine[/name_f] I love

Those lists have a lot of overlap with mine, so I will have to comb through and see what gems stick out at me. Thank you!!

I do love [name_f]Andromeda[/name_f], so I’m focusing on that but definitely open to others.

Thank you!!

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_u]Seren[/name_u] for the two syllable name - it means star in Welsh.

Some ideas for star that I like are [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Astra[/name_f], [name_f]Etoile[/name_f], [name_f]Celeste[/name_f], and my bet l very favorite is [name_f]Estelle[/name_f]. That sounds Tolkienesque too.

Speaking of Tolkien, he was a fan of floral names for girls. He included [name_f]Elinor[/name_f], and I like [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Azalea[/name_f], [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f] (though if I were to bestow this name in someone I’d leave it at the [name_m]French[/name_m] Chrysanthe because filling out bubble sheets would be torture.)

For [name_f]Star[/name_f] Trek names, my favorites are [name_m]Hikaru[/name_m], [name_m]Apollo[/name_m], and [name_f]Miri[/name_f].
