We are considering [name_u]Luca[/name_u] for our son, but am a bit worried about how similar it is to [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] which is very popular right now. Whilst we have ruled out another name for being too unique, I don’t want a name that is so popular he is one of five with the same name in his class… is [name_u]Luca[/name_u] sufficiently different to [name_m]Lucas[/name_m]?
Also is it ok to use [name_u]Luca[/name_u] if we don’t have Italian heritage? We do actually have Spanish heritage so [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] would be the correct versión there, but we are looking for that unicorn name of not too unusual and not too popular!
Luca is actually pretty popular right now; it’s #67 in the US. i can’t imagine Luca being confused for Lucas, since almost everyone is familiar with Luca by now. honestly, i think there’s a chance you would encounter several other children named Luca by the time your child is in school, just like you may with Lucas. so that’s something to keep in mind!
the name Luca has no significance within Italian culture so it is perfectly fine to use, even if you have no Italian heritage
I love [name_u]Luca[/name_u]! While it is fairly well used, I wouldn’t say it’s wildly popular and I think the fact that it has quite an unconventional “shape” for an [name_f]English[/name_f] boy name (with the A ending) gives it a more cool, quirky vibe than it might otherwise have based on popularity alone. It’s a lovely name and not too culturally exclusive in my opinion.
These names are very separate and distinct to me. I’d never think of [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] if I heard [name_u]Luca[/name_u].
Also, I’ve known several non-Italian Luca’s. No one thought anything of it.
