Lucia

Thoughts?

Too Spanish sounding for a family that isn’t Spanish?

I thought [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] was Norwegian and Swedish. Regardless, I don’t think it matters if you love the name.

Nah. Not too Spanish at all! It’s pretty international. It has ties to [name_f]Italy[/name_f], Spain, Scandinavia, Poland, Germany, Eastern Europe… pretty much all over Europe. And it’s so beautiful! I personally prefer the Italian (loo-CHEE-ah) and English (LOO-shah) pronunciations, but Loo-see-ah is nice, too. I think I’m mainly just trying to avoid [name_f]Lucy[/name_f]–I’ve never been a huge [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] fan. It is a lovely name, though!

Personally I don’t like it, but I dislike [name_m]Luc[/name_m]- names anyway.

I don’t think it’s too Spanish, at least not overtly so like [name_f]Estrella[/name_f] is. [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] just makes me think of the island.

I’ve always thought of it as Italian and would pronounce it the Italian way. I love it! I love Italian names, though (I’m not Italian).

I like the Spanish pronunciation (loo-see-ah) best of the pronunciations and it’s what I’d default to if I had to guess.

But I don’t think it’s TOO Spanish. It’s like [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] to me - it certainly is Spanish and it certainly works with Spanish surnames, but it’s not the sort of name that needs a parental Spanish cultural connection.

[name_f]Lucia[/name_f] is pretty, and as other posters have said, it has ties to many cultures. In any case, though, I don’t mind the idea of using names from other cultures - for example, I’m not Italian, but I’d absolutely use [name_f]Bianca[/name_f] (if it wasn’t way too close to one of my existing daughters’ names, of course).

I love [name_f]Lucia[/name_f], especially with the nickname [name_f]Luz[/name_f]

I think it’s a lovely name, but I probably wouldn’t use it because there are too many possible pronunciations. And I particularly dislike the LOO-sha pron.

I think it’s very international, like [name_f]Isabel[/name_f] or [name_f]Elena[/name_f]. I live in [name_f]Asia[/name_f] and even I know some here. Go for it.

I would think it is Italian, my niece is married to an Italian man and their daughter is called [name_f]Lucia[/name_f] (loo-CHEE-ah) I love this name and think it is very pretty. It is a very international name so I wouldn’t say it is too Spanish!

I named my daughter [name_f]Lucia[/name_f]! (We say Loo-SEE-ah–which I would counter is also a basic English pronunciation, and the Swedish pronunciation, as well as the Spanish one). I’m American, he’s Dutch. We were initially concerned about the multiple pronunciation possibilities, but most people say it the way we do (though in Dutch and [name_m]German[/name_m] the accent is actually on the first syllable–LOO-see-ah. Also Portuguese. However, this is a very slight difference). When we’re in [name_f]Italy[/name_f], we say it the Italian way. The only pronunciation I’m not wild about is LOO-sha, but only 2 people I’ve ever met said it that way. It’s not really an issue, and it’s such a gorgeous name! Plus, when people say, “What’s her name?” they hear the way you say it first. We get compliments on the name all the time. And the meaning is so beautiful, and quite fitting, as she has brought light into our lives.

Oh–and my daughter’s nickname is [name_f]Lulu[/name_f].
