Luna - Looney or Lovely?

Lately, I’ve been considering the name [name]Luna[/name]. It has a pleasant sound and nice imagery, but does it have too much teasing potential? I’m a little nervous about the whole “Looney Lovegood” [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] association. What do you all think, is it too tease-worthy?

I love [name]Luna[/name]! I think its cute and quirky. I think the HP association is a good one because [name]Luna[/name] Lovegood, although odd, is also brave, intelligent, and a loyal friend. People who recognize the association will probably be HP fans and therefore will most likely love the character and the name
Plus the name [name]Luna[/name] is becoming a somewhat popular name among the Hispanic population in the United States so I think people are becoming used to it.

Im the last person on earth who has never read [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] or seen any of the movies…but I think [name]Luna[/name] is gorgeous! Its common enough that I dont see teasing potential.

I love [name]Luna[/name] and it’s our top name  I don’t think you have to worry about the looney part because your child’s generation won’t know [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] and if they did, [name]Luna[/name] was such an awesome character, I don’t see how it could be teased.

I have heard of “lunatic” though being a common way to tease, but bullying in schools has gone down a lot since I was little. It’s also ranked at #278 so it’s getting popular!

Not the only one, I haven’t seen or read any, I personally refuse too.

Anyway, I don’t think kids your daugthers age will know HP references, especially not in elementry school when name teasing would be most extreme. It’s an sweet name, I stay go for it!

I don’t like it because it reminds me of the moon, as in Lunar. And the moon is beautiful, but at the same time, kind of creepy with werewolf associations, witchcraft, halloween, ect…It is a dark name in my mind.

I can see that.

Welp, I had no idea [name]Luna[/name] was so popular. I like to think that I usually have my thumb on the name trend pulse, but I think I missed this one. [name]Do[/name] you all think it will keep climbing in popularity?

Personally I think of the name as really cute and spunky. I don’t get a dark feeling at all. Everyone associates things differently, just expressing a second opinion for the OP.

Agree, I don’t get a bad feeling at all, I always found the name to be super cute, so does my fiance. We like the idea of having a “little luna” it just sounds so adorable.

I think the name probably won’t ever break into the top 100, but you never know. [name]Harry[/name] [name]Potter[/name] made it popular after all, so I think it’ll go down. Popularity doesn’t bother me though. I never met a [name]Luna[/name] personally, but I doubt it’ll change my mind if I met one. It’s the only name my fiance’ and I can agree on for a girl.

I love [name]Luna[/name] because of it’s connections to the moon. The moon is beautiful and bright and calm. [name]Love[/name] it. love the name [name]Luna[/name] and everybody will be teased about something, i wouldn’t worry about it.

I think it’s lovely. The meaning and sound is gorgeous,I like saying it out loud. The immediate association I have is the moon.
However the loony thing may be an issue. Not sure about slang terms in the US but in the UK is an old and still commonly used term for crazy.
But even with that in mind, children can be cruel and tease regardless of any “obvious” teasing opportunities.
I read on another thread that a berry had known a boy teased with “[name]Daniel[/name],[name]Daniel[/name] cocker spaniel”. Where there’s a will there’s a way I suppose!

Yeah, I’m not a big fan of [name]Luna[/name]. I tend to connect [name]Luna[/name] with looney/lunatic. While I like the moon connection, I don’t want to basically hand my kid over to the bullies. At least where I’m from (small-ish Midwestern town) a name like [name]Luna[/name] will make a kid a prime target. Plus, there are just other names that I like more anyway.

So there’s my 2 cents.

I would have to disagree here, HP is becoming common English class curriculum. And I’m fairly certain that the HP generation will be reading it to their kids

Well they couldn’t go farther than the 3rd-4th book, unless they’re okay with their children reading/learning swear words, so if teasing happened it would likely be when the kids are older and by then they would prob be mature enough

I think it’s looney. Sorry, you asked. It’s also a name I associate with pets

Its a beautiful, magical, gorgeous, stylish name that any little girl would be lucky to have

[name]Lovely[/name] rather than looney [name]IMO[/name]!

I honestly love the name  I’m very into moon-related names … especially [name]Diana[/name]! <3

It’s lovely, not looney

[QUOTE=catloverd;1507346]Agree, I don’t get a bad feeling at all, I always found the name to be super cute, so does my fiance. We like the idea of having a “little luna” it just sounds so adorable.

Awwww…that’s so cute! Only a pregnant women would get teary-eyed by reading the phrase “little luna”. I hope you guys get your little luna someday.

I do see the obvious moon connection to Luna, but I see it more as a calm, starry night, pale moon sort of thing. I can see how it could go dark - moon, full moon, black cat, halloween - but that doesn’t bother me so much. I don’t know if Luna is “The” name for us, but it’s definitely going on the list. Now I am pondering Luella…
