I’m looking for some thoughts a feedback on two girl names: [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Nina[/name_f]
We are completely torn here. I want [name_f]Luna[/name_f], he wants [name_f]Nina[/name_f]. We had decided on [name_f]Luna[/name_f] before we were even pregnant with a girl, and now that we are expecting a girl, the hubs wants [name_f]Nina[/name_f]. I feel that [name_f]Nina[/name_f] is a little too regular, although it is a family name. He feels that [name_f]Luna[/name_f] will feel too dated when our daughter is older. I really like the idea of naming my daughter after the moon, for many reasons. He likes that [name_f]Nina[/name_f] is cute as a little girl, but also very appropriate/sophisticated as an adult name. Neither of us is budging much. We have been able to agree upon a middle name, [name_f]Aveline[/name_f], which we like with both [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Nina[/name_f]. The last name is very [name_m]German[/name_m] sounding, and nothing really goes well with it. Thoughts and advice?
[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_f]Nova[/name_f]?
It’s a mix of the 2.
[name_f]My[/name_f] vote would be for [name_f]Nina[/name_f] though. It’s classic sounding. I have to agree with your husband - [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is trendy.
It’s lovely… I see it’s appeal.
There are other “moon” names…
[name_f]Livana[/name_f]
[name_f]Selene[/name_f]/[name_f]Selena[/name_f]
[name_f]Cynthia[/name_f]
[name_f]Diana[/name_f]
Thanks for the ideas! I really like [name_f]Nova[/name_f]. I’ve looked at other “moon” names, but none of them really struck a chord with me. [name_f]Livana[/name_f] is new to me though, so I’ll look into that more. Thanks!
I like both [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Nina[/name_f]. I’m going to pick [name_f]Luna[/name_f], just because I think it has a sweet sound and I love the moon imagery (although I’m in love with [name_f]Selene[/name_f]). Some other suggestions:
[name_f]Nola[/name_f]
[name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]- [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f] was the [name_m]Titan[/name_m] of the moon, and is one of the moons of [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] or [name_m]Saturn[/name_m] I believe
[name_f]Cleo[/name_f]
[name_f]Cassie[/name_f]/[name_f]Cassia[/name_f]
[name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f] (star name)
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
I see both names being dated but in a good way. [name_f]Nina[/name_f] is the most universal. [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is divine and quirky. [name_f]Nina[/name_f] is an understated elegance and over looked classic.
[name_m]Both[/name_m] hold an air of exotic-ness, but [name_f]Luna[/name_f] imho has a mysteries appeal. [name_f]Nina[/name_f] sounds all grown up, prim & proper for a little girl, while [name_f]Luna[/name_f] carries a youthful appeal. [name_m]Both[/name_m] work well with your middle name, and [name_m]Both[/name_m] age well ( Especially in our time frame). I hope this helps you.
P.S. I did come across a [name_f]Luna[/name_f] [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] in an 1886 Census
I picture [name_f]Nina[/name_f] as a better name than [name_f]Luna[/name_f] for an adult- and if it is a family name it is always nice to honor them. I also like previous posters advice of [name_f]Nova[/name_f] as a compromise
I like them both, but I think he’s right, [name_f]Luna[/name_f] will date. It’s also makes me think of looney - which comes from the idea people went mad at the time of a full moon.
hands down luna, [name_f]Nina[/name_f] is still merging toward being over used, but she is lovely. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not as stunning as [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. As far as dated goes, imho, [name_f]Luna[/name_f] had been used before in all types of eras and continues to resurface. In my book that means she is familiar but rare. [name_f]Nina[/name_f] is more used than rare but not as used as [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Catherine[/name_f] or over used as [name_f]Mary[/name_f].
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Luna[/name_f]; it evokes such mysterious and warm imagery in my mind. [name_f]Nina[/name_f] sounds very plain and ordinary to me.
I prefer [name_f]Luna[/name_f] over [name_f]Nina[/name_f], but have you considered [name_f]Lucina[/name_f]? I think [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Nina[/name_f] could work as nicknames for [name_f]Lucina[/name_f], so it seems like a possible compromise for you.
Apologies for any repeats.
WDYT of [name_f]Lena[/name_f]? It’s sort of in-between. [name_f]Lena[/name_f] [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] is lovely. [name_f]Lucine[/name_f] also has elements of both [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Nina[/name_f], and means ‘moon’ too. Similar to [name_f]Nina[/name_f], it’s elegant and sophisticated for an adult, with the cute nn [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] for a young girl.
[name_f]Selena[/name_f] [name_f]Aveline[/name_f] is another suggestion - [name_f]Selena[/name_f] means ‘moon goddess’.
[name_f]Luna[/name_f] is my pick out of the two - [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is actually my kitten’s name!
I think they’re both lovely and could work on a bunch of different ages, but [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is for sure my favourite
I prefer [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. I know several [name_f]Nina[/name_f]'s and I’d love to meet a little [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. [name_f]Nina[/name_f] for me is a bit ordinary while [name_f]Luna[/name_f] is quirky (in a good way!) and interesting.
What about:
[name_f]Nora[/name_f]
[name_f]Maia[/name_f]
[name_f]Talitha[/name_f] (a star name)
[name_f]Mira[/name_f]
[name_u]Seren[/name_u] (star)
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_f]Gaia[/name_f] (Greek goddess of the [name_f]Earth[/name_f], a bit different like [name_f]Luna[/name_f]?)
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] (star)
[name_f]Maeve[/name_f]
[name_f]Adara[/name_f] (star name)
[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
I was coming by to suggest [name_f]Lucine[/name_f] (sounds like a [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] name, but it is actually Armenian and means moon). But, I see someone already suggested [name_f]Lucina[/name_f], which I think combines your two names even better. Ceyla and [name_f]Cyra[/name_f] also means moon. [name_f]Neoma[/name_f] means new moon, AND it sounds a lot like [name_f]Nina[/name_f] … but the “oma” ending makes it sound like a type of tumor to me, unfortunately.
But maybe the appeal of [name_f]Luna[/name_f] and [name_f]Nina[/name_f] is that they’re both feminine yet tailored … at least your two names are not so different in style. I understand that [name_f]Luna[/name_f] will seem more dated, but it isn’t too popular. It won’t scream “2010s name!” so much as whisper it. And people will probably be able to guess what decade she was born in her whole life anyway, you know? I love both of your choices. I suppose I lean a bit towards [name_f]Nina[/name_f] but there’s something so gorgeous about a name meaning “moon.”
I would have to choose [name_f]Luna[/name_f], because it is the name we’ve chosen for our daughter-on-the-way. It’s honestly the only name we’ve been able to agree on and I think it’s really beautiful, if a bit whimsical and quirky. But I really like [name_f]Nina[/name_f], I think it’s vintage and cute when she’s small but also sophisticated on a woman. I have also never met a [name_f]Nina[/name_f], so maybe that’s why I find it interesting.
I do worry about [name_f]Luna[/name_f] being too quirky or silly-sounding for an adult woman, but I’ve tried talking myself out of those reservations because I don’t see us settling on a better name and I do truly love it. If it bothers her, she could also use her middle name as many people do including both of my parents-in-law (though I sincerely hope it is not an issue).
I way prefer [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. I think its really sweet and pretty. [name_f]Nina[/name_f] to me is a nickname and doesn’t sound very good on its own.
