I love -in names generally and Lupin is one of my favourites for a boy. Is it usable though?
I think it’s got a lovely light, fresh sound but does the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] connection and general “out there”-ness make it a GP/middle name only?
I think Lupin is gorgeous and although unusual, bot weird at all. It reminds me of [name_m]Louis[/name_m] and [name_m]Reuben[/name_m], so I think though it is unique, it’s not strange or too out there. It’s a familiar strange. I was so distracted by Lupin being so beautiful that until you mentioned I didn’t think of the HP character… which I wouldn’t worry about anyway, because he was very nice.
Lupin is my favorite HP character, so my mind immediately went there and I honestly wouldn’t be able to think of anything else hearing the name. For me, it sounds like a last name, but not one that has the right qualities to become a first name. However, there is nothing inherently bad or wrong with the name, so if the strong HP connection doesn’t bother you, go for it. =]
I’m a huge [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] fan, so [name_m]Remus[/name_m] Lupin is my first thought. It would have to be a GP for me. Great character, though!
I actually thought of the flower first, which is odd because I am definitely from the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] generation and I grew up with the books.
I really like it - I love the flowers and I think it would be really refreshing to see a flower name on a boy. I do think most people will think you named him after the HP character though, which would probably bother me. [name_m]Even[/name_m] though it’s a great character, I just wouldn’t want people to think I named an actual child after a character from [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m].
I really like the idea, and the HP connection is an added bonus for me, but I think you’d maybe have to be prepared for a few comments on it, especially as he’s referred to Lupin a lot ([name_m]Remus[/name_m] might be easier to get away with). Personally I can’t say or see the name without thinking of him immediately. But it does have a nice ring to it, I quite like Lupus (but the disease makes it a no) so the sound appeals, and the flower connection is sweet too.
Despite the [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] connotations, Lupin has always made me think of Lupus. So that negative connotation makes it an ‘ehhh’ name to me.
Lupin is a very handsome name. I think of [name_m]Remus[/name_m] Lupin too, but I read [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] for the first time fairly recently (over a few months last year) and I have a number of close friends who are huge fans of the series, so it’s probably more on my radar than for a lot of people. He’s a wonderful character to be associated with though!
Ask some people you know in real life what they think of the name, without mentioning the character as not to prompt them into thinking of him. [name_m]How[/name_m] many people mention it? I’m saying this because I’ve noticed there are a LOT of people on Nameberry who are really into books/reading and into [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m] definitely moreso than I know in real life. Which is awesome, but the answers you get here may be a bit skewed.
I immediately associate Lupin with the character in [name_m]Harry[/name_m] [name_m]Potter[/name_m]. But at least it’s a great character and the name is pretty. With all the unusual names out there I don’t think it would be too weird. Some adults on the playground might chuckle the first time they hear it, but I doubt the kids would even bat an eye. Not long ago I met a little boy named Benjen (like the Game of Thrones character) and even though it was funny at first, it didn’t stand out from the other kids’ names in a bad way.
It is a really cute name but I do associate the name with HP character too, unfortunately he is one my least favorite characters so it is not a positive connection.
