I was messing around with combining names of people in my family, particularly people who were important to me but I don’t really like their names. Thinking about combining the names [name]Judith[/name] and [name]Lester[/name], I came up with [name]Luther[/name]. I rather like it. It’s familiar, but not commonly used, and has the great (in my opinion) nickname [name]Lu[/name] or [name]Louie[/name].
But is it usable? Any teasing potential? Too tied to the late Dr. [name]King[/name] (not that that’s a bad thing)? What would you pair with it as a MN?
I love [name]Luther[/name]! So handsome and classic, but so underused. I would love to meet a little [name]Luther[/name]. My friend almost used it, but her family gave her too much crap about it. I don’t even know what they didn’t like about it – they weren’t specific; just very negative. She actually loved the fact that it was tied to Dr. [name]King[/name]. I don’t love it as much as her, but I don’t think it’s super tied to him. It just seems that way because it’s used so infrequently.
My son’s name is [name]Luther[/name]. He just turned a year old. We read the name in a Warhammer 40,000K novel, and started mulling it over while I was pregnant. We love that it sounds masculine and strong and that it is [name]German[/name] which is part of my hubby’s heritage. I love that it is uncommon, yet well known. It is easy to say and easy to spell. It sounds great with our last name, which is rare, considering our last name is a mouthful. It also has positive history and associations, although that wasn’t an influence in our decision to use it. It is 100% usable imo, obviously. I love it! I don’t want it to become popular, because I love how uncommon it is, but at the same time I would like to see it get used more because I think it is a great name.
I might add that my family didn’t love it at first. My mother in law preferred our other top picks. My dad’s initial reaction was “Well, its your kid…”. Lol. He later called back and said that he thought about it and realized that it is a great name and that he really liked it because of [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] and [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] [name]King[/name]. We aren’t religious so the association with [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] doesn’t mean anything to us, and although I really admire [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] [name]King[/name] and I think he was a very great man, it doesn’t mean much to us personally. I do like that it adds a very positive association to the name, but ultimately that wasn’t why we chose the name.
I feel like it has too many associations - MLK, the original [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name], [name]Lex[/name] [name]Luthor[/name], to name a few. It gives off a nerdy vibe to me, too.
Lol, that is funny. His doctor calls him [name]Lex[/name] [name]Luthor[/name] whenever we go in. I don’t mind it. We are nerdy people to begin with, hence the fact that we got the name out of a Warhammer 40,000K novel!
Also, I wanted to mention that we gave him [name]Wolf[/name] as a middle name with the intention of nicknaming him [name]Wolf[/name], but we ended up nicknaming him [name]Lulu[/name].
[name]How[/name] cool to hear from someone who has a little [name]Luther[/name]! This is exactly my feelings on the associations with the name. Mostly positive (except maybe [name]Lex[/name] [name]Luthor[/name], which I pronounce slightly differently) but not personally very meaningful to me even though I like them.
Also, I love your combo [name]Luther[/name] [name]Wolf[/name]. Sooo handsome and masculine in a subtle way!
And @kailua, I like the nerdy vibe! I’m a little nerdy, and I’ve only ever dated nerdy guys so the one I end up marrying will likely be nerdy. Plus [name]Luther[/name] fits with my other “old man” names on my list like [name]August[/name], [name]Henry[/name], and [name]Walter[/name] (GP).
I think it’s usable! I like [name]Luther[/name] a lot… I’m not sure if I’d use it, but now I want to seriously consider putting it on my short list because I’ve liked it for a while.
I remember my favourite history lecture in high school was about [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name]. I’m not religious, but my teacher was amazing.
It has a nice sound.
I think it’s very usable and, lets face it: [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] [name]King[/name] [name]Jr[/name] was named after his father who was named after [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name]. [name]Both[/name] [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] and [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] [name]King[/name] [name]Jr[/name] fought for a world with more equality and freedom. It’s not really the worst association of all times.
I do think of [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name] first but I was raised down the street of a Lutheran Church.
I think it could be seen as an homage to [name]Martin[/name] [name]Luther[/name], church reformer, more than MLK. MLK is always referred to be all three names, whereas [name]Luther[/name] gave his surname to a Church, a theology, and is usually referred to by his surname.
Unfortunately it has a vaguely sinister vibe due to [name]Lex[/name] [name]Luthor[/name], which is very unfortunate. But kitty’s perspective is the most valuable which is great because in theory it should be quite usable, and she says there have been no problems.
