Most of the names I’m considering for our [name_f]July[/name_f] 2014 baby have the same kind of feel (think [name_u]Evelyn[/name_u], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Enid[/name_f], [name_f]Frances[/name_f]), but [name_f]Lux[/name_f] is an anomaly that always keeps its spot on my list. [name_m]Just[/name_m] wanted to get some opinions on this name to go with a surname that sounds like [name_u]Lyndsey[/name_u]? Here’s my list of pros and cons for [name_f]Lux[/name_f] so far:
I adore [name_f]Lux[/name_f]. There was a TV show a while back… I think it was called Life Unexpected? The main character’s name was [name_f]Lux[/name_f]. Another somewhat “famous” [name_f]Lux[/name_f] bearer is [name_f]Lux[/name_f] Atkin, the daughter of a famous stylist. The name is definitely growing in popularity to a degree… Of course, it’s no where near being the next [name_f]Olivia[/name_f], but it will become more common to people’s ears as time goes on. It has a great meaning and I think the X is stylish. It fits in with [name_f]Alexa[/name_f]/[name_u]Lexi[/name_u], but it’s different enough to stand out. Alliteration is fine. I think it makes names more memorable. Think about it: would you be more likely to remember a [name_m]Ben[/name_m] [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] or an [name_f]Annette[/name_f] Hoftsetter? Of course, the alliteration in that example was a little extreme, but you get the point. [name_f]My[/name_f] sister’s first name starts with the same letter as her last name and I was always a little jealous because it sounds really cool.
[name_f]Lux[/name_f] is also on our potential middle names list, but I think if we were going to use such a strong name, it’d almost be a waste not to have it as a first. Thoughts?
I think [name_f]Lux[/name_f] just isn’t established enough to hold its ground as a full name. It sounds like a nickname to me and sort of masculine too. [name_f]Lux[/name_f] lyndsey reminds me of the comic book super villain [name_u]Lex[/name_u] [name_m]Luthor[/name_m]. I think a good substitution would be [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] or [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], with the nickname [name_u]Lex[/name_u]. [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f] [name_u]Lyndsey[/name_u] or [name_f]Alexandria[/name_f] [name_u]Lyndsey[/name_u] sounds a lot better and is a lot easier to pair a middle name with. If you introduce her to people as lex instead of [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], that is what they will end up calling her
I like [name_f]Lux[/name_f], but it does feel very itty bitty, like a nickname. If it keeps popping up on your list, it’s definitely worth considering. I don’t think it would be a waste in the middle. It adds a lot of punch to a name, in my opinion. I used to have it on our middle name list and I really loved how it sounded in the middle. Regardless, I do think a modern girl could pull it off just fine as a first name.
Thinking about it overnight, I guess I’d use a three or four syllable more established name for the middle. Vowel names seem to work best? I would love to use [name_f]Lux[/name_f] [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], but my sister-in-law is called [name_f]Amelia[/name_f]. Other thoughts are:
