Lydia & Sylvia

[name]Do[/name] you think [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] are too similar to work as sisters, or are they distinct enough? I’m not expecting, just trying to sort out my list :slight_smile: I adore both [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] but I think they might be too close to work together. They share a lot of the same letters, they have the same flow and number of syllables, and they are of a similar style. Would definitely appreciate a fresh perspective on this, what do the berries think?

Hmmmm, first off I love both names. I think it’s fine in theory. I wonder around the house if like from far away they’d sound too similar though - like if you call out [name]Lydia[/name] if [name]Sylvia[/name] comes running. I don’t think it’s too likely though. I think one way to make this work is if you like nicknames - Lyddie/Liddy and [name]Sylvie[/name] sound more distinct. Or just use [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name] or [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvana[/name].

The other consideration is if you plan on more than 2 kids. I mean it’s OK to break patterns, but I would expect [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name]'s sister to be [name]Julia[/name], [name]Dahlia[/name], or [name]Amelia[/name].

Good luck!

I don’t think they are too close at all. I love [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name]…and if you called them [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvie[/name], they would sound even more distinct.

I think they’re too close. I actually had something of the same problem, loving [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Lucia[/name] and [name]Lovisa[/name]. I kept [name]Lydia[/name], since it’s my great-grandmother’s name.

Maybe Sunniva could be an alternative to [name]Sylvia[/name]? It’s a little more unusual, but very pretty :slight_smile: I’m also reminded of [name]Sabine[/name]/[name]Sabina[/name] and [name]Selena[/name].
[name]Lydia[/name] alternatives might be [name]Louisa[/name], [name]Lenora[/name], [name]Lilias[/name]/[name]Lileas[/name] and Leoba/Lioba.

Personally I think they are too matchy for siblings.

Thank you so much everyone :slight_smile: I’m still a little undecided but if I had to choose between them I’d probably go for [name]Lydia[/name] as I’ve loved it for so long. I agree that [name]Lydia[/name]/[name]Lydie[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] might make them more distinctive, but I’m not completely convinced. Maybe I’ll keep [name]Sylvia[/name] for a mn.

@jesba- it’s really funny you mentioned [name]Amelia[/name], because I was talking to my mum about this problem the other day and she thought that [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Sylvia[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name] would make perfect sisters.

@dearest- Sunniva, [name]Louisa[/name] and [name]Lilias[/name] are gorgeous, thanks :slight_smile:

This is so funny. My sister named her first daughter [name]Lydia[/name], and I told her [name]Sylvia[/name] would be a perfect sister name if they ever have another girl. Some people have a problem with “matchy” sibsets, but I don’t. [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] match in endings only, that’s all. Other choices that may be a nice fit could be [name]Eliza[/name], [name]Alma[/name], or [name]Calla[/name]. But seriously, [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] are so precious together!

I wouldn’t use them together. I prefer sibling names that are similar in style but have distinct sounds, e.g. [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Pearl[/name]. [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] have the same rhythm, length and vowel sounds. Too much.

I actually know sisters called [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] (their other sister is [name]Nadia[/name]), and I actually don’t think they’re too matchy. Although the rhythms are similar the styles of the names are distinct enough to set them apart.

I think if all names in the sibset ended in -ia it would work! If it’s just [name]Lydia[/name] and [name]Sylvia[/name] it would be fine, or it would be fine if it’s [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Sylvia[/name], [name]Claudia[/name], and [name]Aurelia[/name]. A boys’ name wouldn’t have to end in -ia obviously, but I think a sibset like [name]Lydia[/name], [name]Sylvia[/name], and [name]Violet[/name] would seem off. I love both names by the way! :slight_smile:

I think they are fine together, I don’t think [name]Sylvia[/name] would come running if you called for [name]Lydia[/name] despite the same amount of syllables and similar sounds.

I think they are too close-- 4/5 letters in [name]Lydia[/name] are shared in [name]Sylvia[/name], and the endings and principal vowel are the same. They are also drawn from an identical style family-- if is was [name]Sylvia[/name] and [name]Solveig[/name] I could see the difference, even though the same number of sounds are shared.
