I love the names [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] and [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. I have a cousin named [name_f]Lilah[/name_f] so the reasonable middle ground is out. We agree to [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] for a middle name.
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is very unique and I worry it is too unique, to the point it might seem made up. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is becoming so common overseas but everyone intelligent I know is unsure how to pronounce it and hubby and I agree it would require a lot of correction her whole life.
What are your thoughts between the two names and maybe for similar suggestions?
I prefer [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. I happen to love both [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], but I think the “R” of [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] makes the name [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] feel more substantial, somehow. It’s stunning!
I prefer [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. I personally think [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is familiar, and not too unusual or particularly unique, especially with the His Dark Materials trilogy and The [name_u]Golden[/name_u] Compass film. I feel it has a lot of strength, feistiness, and personality whilst still being very accessible. [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]'s an absolutely awesome name!
I prefer [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]. It’s very beautiful and doesn’t seem made-up at all to me. It’s used in book/film AND a constellation. So it’s a starry, feisty name to me.
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is pretty and unique I’ve only come across one person with the name but she spelled it Lira. But I do agree that because most people won’t know how to pronounce it she will probably have to spend a great deal of time correcting everyone on the pronounciation.
[name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is so pretty, I really love how this flows together. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] has my vote!
I also like the suggestion of [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. What about the name [name_f]Lark[/name_f]? I know it may be pretty out there for some people, but I think it’s pretty.
Some other suggestions I have are:
[name_f]Iris[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Lavender[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]
I really like both names, but for some reason I like the feel of [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] way better with [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]! It’s a better balance for some reason, maybe because of the R sound like pp said. I don’t think [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is too strange at all, it fits right in with all the [name_f]Lila[/name_f] variations, plus many people are familiar with it from the [name_u]Golden[/name_u] Compass books.
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is beautiful and easy to prn, sounds like ‘lyrical’ which is nice.
I am one of those people who reads the name [name_f]Isla[/name_f] and immediately my mind says ‘iss-lah’. shrug ofc in a conversation nobody would have trouble saying [name_f]Isla[/name_f].
They’re both gorgeous! I’m not sure I can choose. I do like how exotic [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] sounds. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is really sweet
Tough! I think I’m leaning more towards [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]. No real reason why.
FWIW, I went to HS with an [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. I was having trouble remembering how to pronounce her name until she said “[name_f]Isla[/name_f] like Island”. That helped a lot and was an easy way to remember it.
I prefer [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]. It’s uncommon but beautiful. I had never heard of the name [name_f]Isla[/name_f] before either. While I agree that it is a beautiful name, it was also hard for me to pronounce and is now becoming increasingly common. All the more reason to choose [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]! I wouldn’t worry about it being too uncommon.
I love both as well (and [name_f]Lila[/name_f]). [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is gorgeous. [name_f]Isla[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] is lovely too, just a wee bit plain in comparison. The only problem I have with [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is a lot of people intuitively say leer-ah as opposed to lie-ruh. Any time I’ve mentioned the name to my partner or other family/friends I get, “isn’t it leer-ah?”
emsky, I have thought about that as well. I think [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] is a little more intuitive by sight than [name_f]Isla[/name_f] is, and I do know that most times people will hear her name before seeing it, which helps some. Also if you say the name somewhere, it seems more likely they will spell it properly on their own vs struggling to think of how to spell [name_f]Isla[/name_f]. Some thoughts I’ve had while convincing myself. I like the sound of [name_f]Isla[/name_f] better, I think, because it is so much softer, but the name [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] seems to have more lifelong perks.
The baby could also end up being a boy, sparing me this issue lol
