Lyra, the liar?

I really like [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]; but I worry people will think of liar before they think of lyre or lyre bird. Is it a problem?

They won’t! At least not from my experience. The only problem I have, is that I live in Denmark and I don’t like the way the pronounce my name the Danish way.

The lyre and the constellation. Not the liar. I love [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]…

That put me off using the name for our last baby. DP loved it, but all I could hear was liar, though I love the mythology and imagry of the name, the sound just didn’t work for me.

That’s somewhat a concern of mine, too, but we’re definitely using it as a middle name because it’s meaningful to us. We’re using it to name future-child after [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] from His Dark Materials, which is the first thing I think of when I hear [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]. I don’t think the “liar” issue is going to be a big one–it only came to mind for me when I started over-thinking things. It’s such a beautiful name that people are going to notice that before they associate it with “liar!”

I’ve loved [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] for a long time mainly because of [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] Belacqua from ‘The [name_u]Golden[/name_u] Compass’, I never associated it with liar before.

I have never had that problem. I named my daughter [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]. Some people try to pronounce it [name_u]Lee[/name_u]-ra but that’s about it.

I think of lyric before anything else. And that’s a beautiful association. I actually really like [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]!

Didn’t even think of it.

I think of [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] Bellacqua before I think of the word liar (which would never have crossed my mind if you hadn’t mentioned it). She’s a pretty awesome character to share a name with. The name itself is sweet and clearly feminine (i.e. opposite of unisex) and spunky without being frilly.
