Lyra

What’s your opinion of [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]? I say and prefer the “leer-ah” pronunciation.

*If you reply, could you focus more on your opinion of the name itself, instead of the pronunciation. I’m not really looking for opinions on the pronunciation. The feedback is great, but “leer-ah” is the pronunciation I would use if I ever used this name. “Lie-ra” reminds me of [name_f]Lila[/name_f] (I don’t like Lila at all), and “leer-ah” just sounds more magical to me. TIA for anymore replies!

I like [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]. I think it’s pretty. I am fond of it because I am an aerialist and it’s an apparatus I use, but like that it also has the musical connection.

I love the musical connection, and the literary connection. Not a fan of the Leer-ah pronunciation though (sorry).

I love it because of the Pullman books! I pronounce it Lie-[name_m]Ra[/name_m]

Thanks for the replies! I’m not a big fan of the “lie-ra” pronunciation, “leer-ah” just sounds more magical to me. Also “lie-ra” reminds me of [name_f]Lila[/name_f], and I do not like [name_f]Lila[/name_f].

I too am an aerialist, and that particular apparatus is pronounced leer-ah. However, when I read the Pullman books, I said it lie-rah. I prefer the lie-rah pronunciation for a child, as leer-ah sounds a bit leery. It is a pretty name though.

I pronounce it lie-rah, which is how they said it in the [name_u]Golden[/name_u] Compass movie. The literary reference is a great one, I can see the series becoming classic children’s literature in the future.

The LIE-rah pn is the only one that comes naturally to me, and also the only one I’ve heard. [name_u]LEE[/name_u]-rah is actually very pretty too but Lira (same pn) is also the name of a city in Uganda and my connections to that are probably too strong.

I like [name_f]Lyra[/name_f] a lot, though. I don’t know if I’d ever use it - I’d be more inclined to go with [name_f]Lara[/name_f]. But I adore the Northern Lights / His [name_u]Golden[/name_u] Compass reference.

[name_f]Lyra[/name_f] (prn. lye-ruh) is lovely! I would pronounce Lira with the pronunciation you’re looking for (leer-uh).

Not a fan. I would put it in the same category as names like [name_f]Aria[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not my style.
